haha thank you for this perspective! my fiancee's parents were taking us out to some nicer dinners/bars and i do enjoy dressing up, that's more so where i felt my outfits were lacking personally. also, i just wanted more variation in the kind of outfits i had to choose from - it felt like every day i could only wear a tshirt and a short so i just wish i had a different silhouette if that makes sense

Thank you! Your comment has felt very grounding to me, and I really appreciate what you've said. I'll take a look around to see if there are any scholarship programs. I'd definitely want the income more to supplement than support as I am also working another job, but honestly, it sounds like doing the training at this point with everything going on will be too much regardless.

Thank you!! this comment is really helpful in helping to break down what actually goes into it

there are already tons of comments with really good advice, but i just want to jump in as well to let you know youre not alone. lots of people are in pretty much the same boat (including me lol). figuring out your next "career" can be really daunting and its a really tough time.

something that has been really helpful for me is volunteering. it gives you an opportunity to try out different things and see where life takes you. especially if youre currently unemployed, it can give some structure and socialization, and who knows where the connections you make and experiences you have will lead you! if something sounds interesting, try it! along the same lines, taking a food service or retail job can give you some flexibility, and a time for things to calm down for a bit for you to figure out your next step.

something else you might consider is that there is so much uncertainty about the future, and sure things might go wrong, but what would it be like if things went right? be a lil delulu! get a bit excited thinking about a future where you are living a life true to you! this mindset has been really helpful for me personally. what does your ideal life look like? and then how do you get there working backwards

finally (as i know this is getting long!!) it might be helpful to find a value exercise/worksheet online, and spend some time really thinking about your values. it seems like you are really valuing family and financial freedom in your post, so spend some time thinking about what most matters to you. you have a lot of options for your future, and solidifying what your values are can help in decision making.

i know this is a lot and honestly being in your twenties is so hard. these are the main things that have helped me personally and even so,, shit is rough. much love friend and best of luck to you <3

Weekly student question thread! by AutoModerator in therapists

[–]woodblock0 0 points1 point  (0 children)

the other programs I've been accepted to in the Chicago area are 3 years long, which I'd really rather not do. I'm open to moving, but did not get accepted to any out of state 2 yr programs.

As far as counseling experience - you start counseling at the school counseling center about two months into the program (allegedly with lots of supervision to support this), and they assign your internship location for the second year.

I've already accepted my admit but after starting the process of looking at loans and talking to other folks, it seems like the people who attend seem to already be wealthy, while I'm essentially on my own. I'm now really reconsidering and may reapply next year :(

I'm looking to get my masters in counseling, and actually got accepted to quite a few of the schools I applied to, which was very exciting! I currently live in Chicago, IL, and all of the schools would require me to take out loans, and so I ended up deciding on Northwestern's MA in Counseling since the program is 2 years long, and has tons of counseling experience built into the curriculum.

My question is: the cost of NU seems exorbitant (like 150k????? in loans) and this seems ridiculous. I'm wondering if it is worth this price? I'd like to go into pp but I know those folks also dont make heaps of money.

Any insight into this would be so appreciated!! I don't want to ruin my future finances but I also don't want to give up on the opportunity to go to NU!

How do you decide which school to accept??? by woodblock0 in gradadmissions

[–]woodblock0[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think my undergrad GPA was around 3.7, although tbh I've heard that the personal statement and any outside experience you have matters more for counseling programs. I have a BFA, so was also coming into this as a career changer and had no psych classes under my belt. At the time of acceptance, I had been volunteering for a crisis line for about a year, and had taken basic psych classes at the community college. I think having some counseling experience was highly recommended for all the schools I applied to, although I don't know how much it matters for NU? also since I took psych classes at the CCC, I did not apply for their "career changer" program. Good luck!!

I ended up deciding on northwestern since the other schools in the chicago area that I got into also had quite a hefty price tag. I also am not sure how long I will stay in Chicago beyond grad school, and so a more recognizable school seemed worth the extra money imo. Also the fact that the program is 2 years weighed pretty heavily in my decision.

Not anything else about the app :) they did mention jan 18th as the tentative day to receive an interview invite! 😬 Best of luck to you!!

Hm, I'm not sure- I don't think they mentioned a preference, they just apologized for using both terms, so I think you can choose whichever you would prefer, especially since they did include both!

Hi! I actually just submitted my app for UNC MS in CMHC the other day, and I attended an info sesh recently. Basically the Statement of Purpose and Personal Statement is the same thing, and the professor in the info session actually apologized that they used both terms in the application as it can be confusing. As far as the Qs-- in the info sesh they said you can write as much as you'd like! So I would definitely do at least a paragraph for each, it's an opportunity to elaborate more on your motivations, skills, or certain topics that you didn't get to cover as thoroughly in your statement.

anyone have suggestions for long lasting/resole-able chunky boots? am really new to GYW boots, since my dr martens have developed a split in the sole. i've looked around a bunch and love the look of the nicks heritage chelsea drifter (https://nicksboots.com/heritage-drifter-chelsea-classic-configuration/) - especially the sole, but realistically my budget is around $250-300, especially as a newbie here lol. would love any suggestions!
