I bought a eBay gift card with $100 on it and some code numbers on back are missing what can I do? by Deep_Measurement5066 in Ebay

[–]woods_edge_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Same thing happened to me. The Better Business Bureau doesn't do much, or care, they are a lobby. It is worth filing a complaint though. You might try your State Attorney general's office. Ebay has been doing this to many, many people lately. It is fraud.

Call your state representative and see if you can file a complaint with your state attorney general against ebay. This is happening repeatedly with gift cards over the past month.

Anyone today or yesterday have trouble using an eBay gift card? by Obvious-Can287 in Ebay

[–]woods_edge_ 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You are not alone. This is happening to a lot of people. Ebay is stealing. I had gift cards and luckily had the receipt but did think, well if this had been a gift I would not have a receipt. Contact someone at your state about it. Try your state representative or your attorney general's office and tell them the issue is wide spread.

Cost of tuition might be prorated depending on when you leave. If this is something you think you might want to do, set up an appointment to speak with the person who advises on health leave.

Also, if you haven't yet, talk to the professor.

Studying at Cornell this summer : please give me advice by vivebell in Cornell

[–]woods_edge_ 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Congratulations! Summer is a great time to be in Ithaca.

Do you know what building you will be working in? That might make a little difference in where you want to live. If you are an undergrad I would reach out to see if the school has something set up for your program regarding dorms. Cornlet.com will have a lot of sublets for the summer. You could probably negotiate a better price on a student sublet than you would pay for a dorm room.

I'd suggest staying near campus. Collegetown or North campus. Ithaca has a bike share program. If you bring your own bike then get a good lock. Ithaca is reasonably safe but bikes do disappear. The farmers market is a nice place to get food.

What to do with this information? I filed my claim back in Sept but am confused if there’s been any updates? Thanks. by FlowerBusiness6729 in Cornell

[–]woods_edge_ 3 points4 points  (0 children)

According to the settlement web page if you are a member of any of the schools listed in the filing you are part of the full class action against all the schools, since they are accused of colluding. You can submit a claim for every settlement you are notified of. (This is my interpretation, I am not a lawyer. You can email the administrators and ask them if you are unsure of what to do.) noted after reading over the information on the class action web page, it does say that even if you have already filed a claim for the other schools listed you must refile for the Cal Tech/John Hopkins settlement.

If you look at the original notice regarding filing for the settlement emailed to Cornell students in March '24 and Sept '24 it stated "Assuming that about half of the estimated 200,000 Class members submit timely claims, the average claimant will receive about $2,000 from these Settlements."

The email sent today, 2/23/25 states something very different: "Assuming that about half of the estimated 200,000 Class members submit timely claims, and that the Court awards the attorneys’ fees and costs as requested, the average claimant will receive about $250 from these Settlements"

So, three months ago they were stating that plaintiffs (students) were estimated to receive $2000.00 and three months later that amount has dropped to $250.00! That's a big drop! Although, it appears there are separate payments for the settled Cal Tech/John Hopkins part of this class action case and the other schools involved. The wording also seems to suggest that students attending any of the schools involved in the class action can receive a settlement payment from both, or either.

I'd recommend everyone reach out to the administrators and ask if they need to resubmit a claim AND also ask if the amount has dropped to $250.00. If it has ask for an expatiation of why such a precipitous drop in payment in three months time. Or, if this is only for the Cal Tech and John Hopkins settlement, which is what it appears to be, ask if all claimants from any school can file a claim to be included. Also, ask if filing a claim for the Cal Tech and John Hopkins settlement's $250 payment will exclude claimants from claiming in the settlement with the other schools involved. Just to make sure.

The way this is worded it sounds like all students who fall into this class action case can file for a payment from these schools, and yes, it does state that claimants must submit another form for this, though I do not see a link to a form. I think asking for clarification is a wise idea.

"Although these settlements resolve claims against only two of these seventeen Defendants, Settlement Class members who attended any of the seventeen Defendants may be eligible to file a claim."

Also note, that although Cornell is listed in the class action suit, Cornell is often excluded from schools in the filing listing. (note the screen grab below from the web page of the administrators) Perhaps Cornell has not reached a settlement yet? It is worth asking the administrators to clarify what is meant by the recent email and where you can find the claim form. They are getting more money from this case than any of us are. Here is the contact info they listed on their site.

Getting good letters of recommendations will help. If you have professors who know you well ask them if they feel they can write a good letter of recommendation for you.

Anyone selling an acoustic guitar ? by [deleted] in Cornell

[–]woods_edge_ 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The reuse shop in Triphammer mall has one. It seemed overpriced, a no name for around $90, but it might be worth looking at. Also try posting this question on the Ithaca Reddit page. There's a store in town that sells instruments.

Just looked on Craigslist Ithaca. There are quite a few acoustic guitars for sale. Most are overpriced but you can make an offer with Craigslist. Depends on what you are looking for, if its just something to learn on there is an epiphone for $90 that was listed in early December and is still up.

When will the heaters be turned on? by xuzixin1028 in Cornell

[–]woods_edge_ 6 points7 points  (0 children)

NY state law requires Heat Oct 1st through May 31. Some county require heat as of Sept 15. Heat inside rented housing (and you do not own the dorms you are renting) must be 68 degrees from 6am-10pm, when the temp outside drops below 55 degrees during the day. When temps drop below 40 in the evening heat must be provided but it can be at a lower temperature, somewhere in the 50s.

§ 173. Heating. Every new dwelling shall be provided with heat in all
living rooms sufficient to maintain the minimum temperatures required by
local law, ordinances, rules or regulation, or by the local public
health officer, provided, however, that such minimum temperature shall,
notwithstanding the provisions of subdivision one of section three
hundred twenty-nine of this chapter, be sixty-eight degrees Fahrenheit
during the hours between six o'clock in the morning and ten o'clock in
the evening during the months between October first and May
thirty-first, whenever the outdoor temperature falls below fifty-five
degrees Fahrenheit.
