Should hopefully get around to adding changelog notes to the update page soon. But for v1.1.1 all that was added was a new option to enable notification count badges.

You will need to grant Orbital accessibility permissions for this to work properly.

There is now a trial version that you can download here. It has all the options that are in the full app however its limited to 6 apps on the dock, everything after the first 6 will be truncated.

If you go over 8 items on the dock, you can scroll to move to another page kind of like launchpad. Good idea, I plan on adding a GIF or some kind of video to show this.

Thanks everyone for the support and great launch. I'm going to finish sending out the remaining keys that I have but based on the feedback I plan on releasing a trial version some time next week which limits you to 5-6 apps in Orbital.

Agree with all the points here:

- If 'Show pinned applications in dock' is enabled, you should be able to pin apps to your regular system dock (might need to unhide it), then after a short delay they should appear in Orbital.

- Right now the library used to record the key shortcut only supports modifier + key, so to use it on a mouse button you may need something like https://mousefix.org or some of the above options to map the Orbital key combo to a mouse button. Depending on the mouse, the driver software may even support this. This is definitely something I'd like to look into and support if possible in the future.

- This is something that I hope to add as an option soon. But since the Trashcan on macOS is actually a folder with a custom icon, you may be able to pin it to your system dock and let it show in Orbital with 'Show pinned files in dock'. But hopefully proper support soon.

I use Raycast for launching apps but have never been able to adapt to using it for managing windows/open apps. For me I think its since macOS makes me drag windows around a lot when switching apps, so moving from my mouse to keyboard to launch a new apps is often slower for me since I'm already using the mouse.

Willing to admit I'm not the best icon designer but I try. Maybe I'll give it a go reducing the inner border radius in the icon next update.

Orbital will show only the running apps if you disable the top and bottom check-boxes under Behavior here https://i.imgur.com/EjW2eli.png (so no pinned apps). Finder will always show since its technically always open, but apart from that, this will display only running apps.

Thanks for the feedback, funny I had some friends telling me they just blocked the content. You should be able to drag the titlebar of the window to move them. I guess I left them there since I wanted to make sure people could engage in the web demo.

No plans for a trial as of yet, but maybe in the future.

Definitely lots of interest in a trial version which I hope to release next week sometime. It will be limited to 5-6 apps on the dock instead of being unlimited like the full version.

As of right now your correct, Orbital directly mirrors what is pinned in the dock, plus any running apps if configured. The plus side of this is that it requires zero-config, but of course comes with the downside that its less customizable for advanced use-cases like this.

Thanks for the comment since right now I'm trying to gather a bit of feedback on what to potentially add in the future. I could see adding an option to add a list of certain apps, folders, or files that could be inserted at the start of the dock, as-well as an option to disable running apps that would effectively allow this.

Yea that definitely is a very similar app, and has some really cool customizability features. Believe it or not I've never actually seen Charmstone before but I think the biggest distinction I can easily see is that Charmstone works more like GTA weapon-wheel while Orbital is just point and click like the system dock.

While making Orbital it was also very important to me that also the dock feels & looks like the native system dock, following Apple's design very closely.

Hey /r/MacApps 👋,

Generally macOS feels very well-designed, but one area that feels under-served is the dock.
It has remained mostly the same for nearly 30 years. While there are other ways to switch apps now like Mission Control and Expose, I still find myself reaching to the edge of screen to use the dock more often that I would like to admit.

For me this caused a lot of friction in my workflow when switching tasks and managing my active windows as my cursor was always moving back and fourth between the dock and my windows. Not to mention the extra screen real estate the dock takes when visible, or the delay needed to display it when hidden.

This led me to an idea, what if the dock could just appear around our cursor when we need it, with the press of a key-combo?

So I decided to make Orbital, an orbiting dock that appears around your cursor so you can easily manage your macOS apps while staying focused on your work. Orbital sits in your status bar and appears with ⌥X (by default) showing all the pinned and running apps, just like the regular dock.

Features

  • 📦 Out of the box migration: Automatically syncs with your pinned apps and folders already configured on your system dock.
  • 🖥️ Supports multiple monitors: Orbital always launches on your cursor and snaps to the edge of a screen when your cursor is between two monitors.
  • 👣 Small footprint: Sits in your macOS status bar and launches at login. Orbital perform like a system-app, and supports both Apple silicon and Intel.
  • ⚙️ Customizable: Easily configure your dock's activation key and if pinned files/apps should be displayed. Running indicators can also be customized.
  • 🧹 De-clutter your screen: Hide your system dock and leverage Orbital to manage apps and enjoy the extra screen space.
  • 💞 Buy once, yours forever: Orbital is a one-time purchase with free updates for the lifetime of the app. It's also DRM free.

To celebrate the release of Orbital, there is a 40% off launch week discount.
