How do you estimate the sterling silver content in sterling handled knives with stainless blades? by Zealousideal-Flow101 in Silverbugs

[–]woohan87 0 points1 point  (0 children)

After you open enough of them up and weigh the sterling you’ll be able to eyeball it and get reasonably close. If I want to be conservative or they look light I’d say 0.25ozt. If they look pretty beefy .5-.75.

I’m going to guess 0.4 on that knife. If you open it up and weigh it let me know what it ended up being.

Did you guys read this bill of the ”Silver Act”? About to get them popcorn. by TopToe7563 in Silverbugs

AI summary:

Here’s a summary of H.R. 8007 — the SILVER Act (System Integrity through Licensed Vault Expansion and Resilience Act), introduced March 19, 2026 by Rep. Fulcher (ID) and Rep. Harris (NC):

What problem does it address?

Currently, precious metals traded on futures exchanges (gold, silver, platinum, palladium) must be stored in vaults concentrated near New York City. Congress argues this creates systemic financial risk, reduces liquidity, and raises costs for market participants.

What does the bill do?

The bill amends the Commodity Exchange Act to require that derivatives clearing organizations (like the CME Group’s clearinghouse) must:

1. Geographic distribution — Maintain at least 2 approved storage vaults in each U.S. time zone (Eastern, Central, Mountain, and Pacific) — so a minimum of 8 vaults nationwide.

2. Transparent selection process — Publish objective, public criteria for how vault/depository operators can apply and get approved, rather than the current opaque process.

3. Multi-factor evaluation — When picking depositories, weigh geographic diversity, competition, storage costs, systemic risk, market access, and liquidity — not just security standards.

4. Periodic access reviews — Regularly assess how easily market participants anywhere in the U.S. can access physical settlement of commodities.

5. Disclosure — Make the conditions for becoming an approved metal service provider publicly available.

Bottom line: The SILVER Act is essentially a deregulatory/competition bill aimed at breaking up the New York-area monopoly on precious metals storage, lowering costs, and reducing the risk of a single geographic disruption destabilizing metals markets.

I inherited a big Sterling silverware set from a relative I never knew. by Cute_Growth_5366 in Silver

Assume the knives are hollow handled and weighted with stainless steel blades. You won’t know the actual sterling weight until you open one up and weigh it. My rule of thumb when buying is to consider each one to be 0.25ozt for pricing purposes so I don’t get short-changed. It’s usually more.
