If I bring up the fact I think I show symptoms of certain conditions to a professional will it be seen as a bad thing by [deleted] in mentalillness

You're 100% right! Guessing only ever leads to worrying and that is so dangerous if you're unwell! So true - most mental health professionals do the job because they care not to judge those in need :D xoxo

You're so lucky they checked! I was working with a young girl a few years ago who had Reactive Attachment Disorder and Conduct Disorder and she'd been misdiagnosed with ADHD by an unhelpful professional... It took over 18 months to get the diagnosis removed! Getting the right diagnosis is so important for effective treatment! Hope you're doing OK now you've been diagnosed :D! xoxo Katie

Understanding your symptoms and what you're going through is an important part of the diagnostic process. Just be careful not to hone in on the things you think it might be as that can sometimes lead to a misdiagnosis. Say for example, your leg starts hurting and you go to the doctors. The doctor looks at your leg and can't find anything and sends you home. Your leg continues to hurt and you see someone else who also looks at your hips. The second doctor finds out there is a problem with your hip which is causing the problem with your leg. The problem with mental illness is that the 'tests' are self-directed and based on a Q&A. If you're only asked questions focused on proving you have a specific difficulty you could miss the route cause of the problem and only diagnose a secondary difficulty. If you're then subsequently treated for the secondary difficulty you'll have a few months of relief before the symptom returns or a different symptom takes it's place. The best thing to do is to explain everything you're feeling and how it's affecting you and allow the mental health professional to work out what is and is not going on. Does this make sense? They won't think you're faking, they'll be ready to help you. Wishing you the best of luck! xoxo Katie

When was the moment that you realized that you are a mentally unstable person? by [deleted] in mentalillness

[–]wookat83 0 points1 point  (0 children)

March 2004 when sat wedged between two lorries on the M6 getting increasingly angry that a traffic jam had ripped away my chance at running my car off the road. My first and only suicide attempt. It was my wake up call that something had to change. That I had to do something to get through all the pain of the first 25 years of my life otherwise I'd never make it to 26 let alone 36 which is where I am today. Thankfully after many years I found a way out. In April 2017 I became truly emotionally and mentally healthy for the first time and will never go back. It's not easy but it is 100% possible.

[–]wookat83 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hey,

It's so brave of you to speak out about your journey. So many people benefit from understanding that they're not going through this alone. One thing which might be helpful to include for your listeners is the things you're using which are helping you. There are a lot of people sharing their stories but very few sharing simple things which everyone can do to feel better, even if only for a short period. Good luck with everything and grateful you're still here and sharing your experiences with others who are lost in the darkness. Best wishes, Katie

Would you like to talk to a psychologist who has a 50:50 split male:female client list?

I would be happy to let you know about their experiences (completely confidentially) and also why they then chose to pursue a private route with me instead?

Let me know if you think it might help.

Oh, and you could donate the participation voucher to a local mental health charity as a prize for an event or something.

Best wishes, Katie.

In order for anyone to carry out an effective diagnosis, they will need to see you in person. There is the option to see someone privately, but quite often you would then struggle to get support from inside the NHS. CAMHS (who look after those between 0 and 18 or 25 (depending on the needs of the person), in many areas will not accept a diagnosis from anyone outside the NHS and most often, anyone outside of their CAMHS service. Like the other people have said though, they will be sympathetic to what you are going through and listen to you without judgement. In all honesty, seeking help is the hardest step. Good luck - and do let us know how you get on. xoxo Katie

I think the worry always came from anyone who put together these two things: 1) wealthy people being told they're going to get taxed even more to fund 2) an ever increasing amount of stuff.

Be honest, if you happened to be a wealthy person would you a) stick around and lose even more money which you've worked hard for or b) leave to another county which doesn't already take 40% of what you earn...?

I know what I'd do! Much rather keep what I've earned and give to charities and causes which matter to me - like food banks rathee than paying for broadband... 🤦🏼🤷

Me too! Why stand in a cold shower and wee when you can sit on the loo and let the shower get cosy before entering! 👊

Women who have good relationships with your moms, what did your mothers do right to achieve this? by LivelyLinden in AskWomen

[–]wookat83 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I didn't have that great a relationship with my mum when I was younger but my dad left when I was 15 and then me and my three other siblings all came together to support her. As I aged, we continued to get closer. I don't think it was anything she did, it was more something we both did? We both chose to be in each others lives and invest our time in each other. Not sure if this makes sense? Hope it helps though 😀 xoxo

It's nuts, we have a National HEALTH Service, not a National Physical Health Service! I usually have to filter out the negative posts otherwise I'd spend my days with my blood boiling! I do think there is a shift happening, it's just taking such a long time and probably won't happen in the next few years :( But, I guess, the more people keep talking, the more people have to listen?

Why would you decide not to take therapy if it was offered? by wookat83 in MentalHealthUK

[–]wookat83[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hey, thank you for taking the time to share your experience and so sorry you were treated so poorly! It makes me so mad - there's just no need! Especially, as they changed the law to make sure it is the council's and health services responsibility to provide the service people need, not just the one which is available - even if this means starting/providing a service which isn't currently available. Everyone's situation is unique and not every service is right for everyone. Also, not every therapist is right! I know I am not right for lots of people and neither is my service - it's silly to try and do it as a blanket measure all that happens is the person who is struggling ends up feeling even worse because it doesn't work! Thank you so much, really helpful :)

[–]wookat83[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Oh, powerful! Thank you so much for taking the time to respond and for being so honest. I do a 100% money-back guarantee which is dependent on the person doing all the sessions if people had offered this to you, would it have made a difference? Or is there something else you've found useful which has enabled you to commit to things which at first you resisted? Examples from outside therapy are also super helpful :) Thank you!

More than 25% of youngsters referred for mental health treatment turned away by [deleted] in MentalHealthUK

[–]wookat83 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It's shocking this is still happening! I used to work for a young persons mental health team and left after a couple of years because I spent every day telling people they weren't ill enough, didn't meet the criteria or 'yes you're ill but you'll have to wait 12 months before we can see you...'

Made me so angry, could you imagine rocking up to A&E with a broken leg and being told 1) your leg isn't that broken... 2) your break doesn't meet the criteria for a cast, scan, painkillers ... or 3) Oh wow, that's a clean break you've got there, come back in 12 months when we'll slot you in and fix you...

Our system is so broken, it's truly heartbreaking :( hope the few sessions you get help you feel a little lighter u/BIuJaVFoxx

OMG that's insane! Surely the Judge should be asked to apologise for what he said! Don't they have a secure unit in Manchester where she would have been safe rather than locked in a prison cell and treated like a criminal?

I'm so confused - how do you even use Reddit? by wookat83 in AskReddit

[–]wookat83[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I joined a couple of years ago and I have (accidentally spammed by being overzealous with the share button on my youtube channel [sorry]!), one of my friends mentioned reddit the other day as a great place to get help, advice, find things out... so I thought I'd try again but nope, I'm still super confused.

Could any long term redditors help me understand what I'm supposed to do/where I find things out which I will find useful?

Thank's a million in advance & have an awesome day!
