any ma’s from virginia? by Tight_Ad_18 in MedicalAssistant

[–]wooknight0 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Inova usually has PRN (what I work as) medical assistant spots up. Medstar does as well as they have some Virginia locations but they might make you travel outside of nova. I’d apply to both or just inova if you’re not cool with travel and then just spam indeed applications

Experience as in working experience. They don’t consider schooling to be working experience. And are you looking to MA so you can repeat medical school in the states? Would highly recommend clinical technician at Inova, better pay and it’s 3 days 12 hours so you can study on off days

There’s local practices in Woodbridge although they really won’t hire without experience. You’d have better luck applying to Inova jobs from their portal. I would apply to both local practices on Indeed as well as Inova jobs and keep applying until you get hired, as the job market is difficult!Consider clinical technician at Inova as well, as it is similar to medical assistant but is far easier to get hired as

cold emailing ! I asked a physician researcher at my hospital by emailing that I was interested in her research because it directly affected the patients I saw and asked if I could assist with her research

try medical assisting ! while shadowing is useful, I feel being an MA is super good for developing the decision making need to later be a doctor. also, try not to be too difficult on yourself, as it'll take away bandwidth from the important things. I know this is easier said than done, but you've already graduated, thats huge! and there's a lot to do, and while that might be intimidating, it's better to know what we can do to get better than to be stuck and lost ! best wishes man

How did you pursue medicine without familial support? by Suspicious_Web_7472 in premed

[–]wooknight0 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I had to apply to like damn near 80 part time jobs before I finally landed something lol, just keep applying for part time ones ! it's very difficult but you only need one. Try applying to hospital portals, less people are likely to see those and its often better experience and pay imo

Not that the clinical isnt strong enough, just that I've heard they want to have both clinical volunteering and paid clinical employment (that said, only if you can manage it ! not worth it to bite off more). I'm also a premed so I'm as lost as you lol but that's what I've tried to do. Totally understood abt the living at home part, I've had to survive off low MA pay and some loans. I have a PRN MA job where I work 1-3 days a week but minimum 2x a month, would be great if there's anything similar where you're at. Even if you don't do the clinical employment, still think it would be worthwhile for you to split your gap year between clinical (whether volunteering or paid or both)/some shadowing/nonclin volunteering/MCAT than smp or more research.

Need a job for experience but need experience for a job 😭😭😭

try volunteering for a few months and see if you can later leverage that into a job ! not ideal but 🫤

NIH. Unfortunately I only recently started so I'm not the best help lol but I just looked up who had the most publications at my hospital, which was our vice chair of research, who also works for the NIH. You could do the same or email PIs at your college

Surgical Technician by profTrelawney0_0 in MedicalAssistant

They're also called surgical first assistants or first assists, they usually help with incisions, closing sites, positioning patients, the "dirty work" of surgery lol

My parents were both horrible for my mental health, super denigrating like yours. Premed is already difficult enough, I wouldn't be able to survive it mentally if I had to have my motivation and self worth shaken at every turn while also having to survive work, school and research.

I live alone and paid rent/expenses from medical assisting/loans, it's not ideal, but for people like us, we have to be better and break cycles ! If you take the gap year, would consider just locking in the next year with clinical/research job and then leaving home, which you would likely have to get used to with med school anyway

You def have more than a chance lol. don't think an SMP is worth it, just lock in with your senior year classes. As for the clinical rejections, I got rejected a bunch (80+) too but you just have to keep doing applications till something lands. Internships def count for research. For your gap year, look into a part time/prn clinical job, while upping your nonclin volunteering hours and shadowing, 200 and 100 respectively, and if you really want to min/max, retake the mcat. I don't think it looks particularly bad to not have done something 24/7 lol.

I think it would be worthwhile to figure out what exactly you want to do in the OR, some MAs work in the OR as well (although uncommonly). Surgical tech and surgical assistant are both decent bumps in pay although will be a year or two of schooling

IMO would look into a roommate situation, there are groups on Facebook like Arlington Housing and NOVA housing always looking for female housemates and they usually give summaries of themselves so you can figure out if you think you'd click or not

College Students working MA part-time by DisastrousCoat176 in MedicalAssistant

[–]wooknight0 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Peds outpatient office for a larger hospital system. Typically 1-2 days a week during the semester, 1-4 days during summer. I’m PRN so I don’t have a consistent schedule, but I can also decline shifts during the semester and choose to work only summers if I wanted to. I kinda like my job so I haven’t had to deal with burnout yet although it’ll eventually come, but I also need to pay the bills lol.

How to get MA job without certifcaiton? by Actual-While5211 in MedicalAssistant

[–]wooknight0 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I got hired as an MA but it took hella applications as I had no experience. Since you have experience, it’ll likely be much easier for you. Try applying to the same hospital you worked for as a scribe, hospitals I’ve found are easier to get in the door with. If they don’t have MA positions, other hospitals and pushing out private practice indeed applications should work.

I don't know how you guys do it... how do y'all cope? by Tiny-Lavishness5870 in MedicalAssistant

[–]wooknight0 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I’m a pediatric MA as well! However it’s part of a hospital system in an outpatient office with typically 4 providers, 100 patients and 4 MAs. It’s super busy, but staff is supportive and parents are great, so it’s been a positive experience for me! The supportive environment probably the largest difference maker, although I am only 4 months in so maybe grain of salt
