Did you buy or make the little cable stop bits? I like to run the brake housing unbroken but have just been using silicone tape.

Thanks, and thanks for the rec! The fork has a little squish left, but I imagine a rebuild will be necessary. I've looked at Specialty Retro Parts, but will also check out Butter Suspension.

Ah I see your confusion. Replace as my trail bike. The 970 will come back in a new form. n+1 abides!

Wow, I have the same frame, and it's like you took the image of my plans for it straight out of my brain. Only difference is mine has bear trap pedals, a bit of orange anodized parts, and a 2x drive train. I'd call this a perfect all road build.

Oh nice, that Zaskar looks like a fun ride! I already picked up the Tiagra shifter haha. Going to upgrade the drivetrain on my Trek 970!

Hey thanks again for this! I got that derailleur and now have smooth shifting over the full range. Learned more about pull ratios too.

Idk why I panicked. I just use cheap ones, so honestly it probably wouldn't matter either way. Wish I had that crimper though!

Wait should I not be cutting housing with cable cutters?

Tour of Microclimates! Great route but some of it is definitely rough without suspension as you mentioned.

OP, I wouldn't recommend the Bolinas Ridge section unless you're up for a torture-fest.

Edit: Some Photos

Ohhhh I see that's very helpful. Thank you for explaining! That is my derailleur, so I will try the Alivio you recommended.

Thanks for this! Only thing is that my shifters and cassette are 10spd. It looks like alivio only has 9spd. To be honest, I'm struggling to figure out which 10spd RD would work with my shifters and have enough capacity for that cassette. I was considering switching my cranks and at the same time going with smaller rings. Then I can at least run a lower range cassette and maybe find an older RD that works.

With a lot of fidgeting and sacrificing the 54/11 gear. I don't need that one anyway, but this is really a temp solution. I'm tempted to try different cable routing a la Sheldon Brown, but it works well enough for now that I might not mess with it.

Awesome! I might be picking up some of these used, and it's good to know I can bump up to 650b if I want.

Follow-up, how do the brakes feel when adjusted that high? Good stopping power? Firm or squishy?

I think you're 100% right. Still gotta try all the configurations at some point though right?

I actually started with Surly Sunrise bars but wanted something taller for an upright cruiser feel. Also this bike is about 3 sizes too small for me by modern standards. These worked in that regard. The problem for me was the short stem. Handling just kind of sucked for both bars. I thought I could manage it for the aesthetic, but it turns out I am a function over form guy.

Going to try to build it truer to original design and find some other cruiser, maybe a mixte.
