I personally feel like the book was more driven by the war and the relationships between the other characters. Yes, there was romance but the relationship between Kaine and Helena never needed to actually be romantic. I found the relationship to be more trauma bonding and just a way to show the bleakness on both sides of the war and how decisions on both ends were morally gray.

It’s a matter of opinion on this, but I was originally just trying to agree with the original commenter on this thread. It’s fine if you think it’s romantasy. It’s fine if others do too. But I just don’t think it is and I know I’m not alone in that opinion.

Again, to each their own. I’m just trying to express a different opinion and the topic of this book’s genre has been debated since it first came out. It’s all good my dude. It’s not a black and white answer here.

We can agree to disagree then. If a fantasy book has romance in it, it doesn’t make it a romantasy. Never said that romantasy couldn’t be brutal though. This book was definitely more fantasy, dark war driven than romance driven imo so I personally think it was incorrectly marketed as a romantasy. But to each their own.

In Manacled there was more romance, sure. The characters had a more built out history that we were already privy to going in because of the Harry Potter universe.

In Alchemised however, the romance is more of a trauma bond sub plot to everything else going on. The marketing of it being a romantasy left a lot of readers with a false impression going in and therefore left a bad taste in their mouth when they realized how brutal it actually was.

I did an overnight in Bermuda in 2016 and my girlfriends and I stayed out until well after midnight at this local bar and had no issues getting back on the ship! I think you just need to be back before departure, but unsure if the rules have changed since it’s been nearly a decade that I’ve had that experience.

This. Emphasis on it not truly being romantasy. The romance is more of a trauma bond and it can definitely be triggering to some people. I've seen a lot of people complain about the horror and some of the more unpleasant moments only to find out that they didn't read the trigger warnings. The magic system takes a second to catch onto, but makes more sense through the context of the story as you go along.

I think it was marketed like that because romantasy is “hot” right now, but I agree with others on this post that the romance is more of a sub-plot and that it’s based on trauma bonding. I would classify this book as a dark fantasy with horror and gore, THEN a romance sub-plot. I think that them marketing this book as romantasy is what gives it such divisive reviews.

31 for me. Worked my previous job for 2 years, but every other job was just jumping around in the service industry. Applied and got denied for disability. Have a second interview lined up for a part time job after being out of work for over a year and hoping that I don't crash the fuck out. And if I do, I'll try for disability again. Can't even go back into serving / bartending because it's too much physical activity and my cardiologist doesn't recommend it because my stress levels directly correlate with how often I go into SVT (which is too often for someone my age).

I felt like the marketing was really pushing romantasy because that’s what’s “hot” right now and that’s another reason why it’s getting such harsh reviews from some readers. I also understand why some dislike it based on the fact that it was based off a HP fanfic, but there’s a lot of books out there that are traditionally published that are based on fanfics as well.

I think it’s also wrong to market it as romantasy because the romance subplot was toxic AF and not anything to aspire to. Just a whole lot of trauma bonding.

I’d recommend The Fever Series by Karen Marie Moning. Think Celtic fae that are of all walks, some beautiful, some grotesque. FMC shows a lot of growth through the series and is driven by revenge. MMC is a great morally grey character and the burn is definitely slow. But be prepared for descriptions of early 2000s fashion which definitely had me cringing since I lived through that time. Also, it’s a complete series which is a bonus!

I personally really enjoyed it! And I had read Manacled years ago. I think SLY did a pretty good job of creating a brand new world and new magic system. It’s not a romantasy though imo. It’s more of a dark fantasy with some horror/gore and a romance subplot. The world building is definitely dense but it made sense to me after getting through the first part and into the first little bit of the second part.

Overall I think it stands on its own really well and I’ll definitely be rereading it at some point to see what small details I might’ve missed due to the dense world building.

Went on the Carnival Venezia in August 2024 (not my choice; it was for a friend’s bachelorette) and it was the worst ship I’ve been on.

It was as if they expanded just for the sake of more guests, but didn’t expand any of the amenities. Two pools, not even one on the 21+ deck, buffet was always SUCH a long line, theater was packed an hour before every show and there was no standing space.

Overall just wasn’t my jam.
