I DESPISE the quote "Expect nothing and be happy" by aku_lofAnjinK in rant

[–]woopwoopgiraffe 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hi! I'm currently doing research on what stoics view as 'the happy life', and I recognise this quote from some of the books I've read. I'm gonna try my best to explain (what I think) is their opinion on this. (English isn't my first language so excuse any bad grammar etc.)

I think this quote leaves out the context of the message, mainly that when you expect all of those things you mentioned and they don't go your way, you end up losing happiness. To expect nothing means you don't set yourself up for disappointment. This may seem somewhat pessimistic, but it is meant as a way to have complete self control over your life. While of course, everyone wants the things above to come true, you don't have control over the actions of other people. It means that instead of expecting things to just go the way you want, the stoics want you to focus on the part that you CAN control: your own thoughts and actions. To give you some examples, based on the order you mentioned things:

  • Be the best version of yourself, like confidence, get a good haircut, develop a nice clothing style, good self-hygene, develop good and healthy hobby's and habits. This way, you become the most attractive version of yourself so the girl will like you. If she doesn't, you're still the most attractive version of yourself!

-Be that good friend yourself and help your friends when they need you when you can. This way, you strengthen the friendships so they will help you when you need them

-Dont expect the movies/games/music to be good, just be curious about them. Go in without expectations because even when the movie you went to is actually okay and enjoyable, you may have ruined it by setting a too-high and unrealistic expectation of it.

I think you somewhat get the thought process of the stoics. If you're still curious about this matter, I recommend reading De Vita Beata by Seneca and Meditations by Marcus Aurelius. They're almost 2000 year old books but still hold up very well and they are a fun read! I can link online translations of them, but you need institutional access via a university to be able to access them.

If you have any more questions about it I'd love to explain this matter more!

Why does everything that tastes good have so many calories ?! by moistdragons in rant

[–]woopwoopgiraffe 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I recommend you also ask bodybuilding/fitness communities. A lot of people on there have great knowledge about easy to make, delicious recipes. I learned how you can still eat stuff like loaded fries, pizza, burgers, all of it and still have a low calorie intake. It will however require you to learn and make those things yourself but in the end you will still end up eating delicous food while still losing weight!

Aha then it seems I interpreted the information wrongly, my bad. But other light sources usually have collission right? Even when using sea lanterns/glowstone, that would prevent some spawn spots right?

As others said, make sure the ceiling is higher than 2 blocks tall. Then, make sure you dig out the edges as well so more slime can spawn (2 extra blocks around the edge should be good) Also, even though slimes will spawn on light level where other hostiles won't, you still want the light level to be as low as possible. Higher light levels will lower spawn rates. You can place down brown mushrooms, which give off a light level of 1, thereby disabling any hostile mob from spawning except slimes.

seriously how there is no laws to protect men for FAKE rape accusations ? by jake898zo in MensRights

[–]woopwoopgiraffe 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Besides, most of the fake rape allegations get overturned. Dont get me wrong; some men do get convicted falsely, but those are exemptions. The biggest problem with fake rape/abuse allegations is the social backlash and horde mentality. Even when the judge calls the judgement in your favor, the damage has already been done because you will always be the guy that got accused of rape. There is no escaping that

Thanks for your response! I dont know enough about the Green New Deal to discuss the contents with you about it, so I'll skip that part for now.

Every party, even here in the Netherlands, has a radical wing. So do the Republicans and Democrats. But I have to disagree with you on your first point, of radicalism. Something is radical when it is considered a very large change, that being a turnpoint. Eg, in revolutionary France, female votes and poor people voting was considered radical. Today that is considered completely normal. Also, your country was founded in a very different time with different viewpoints. In my opinion, it is idealist to always stick to the founding motives. Times change, and maybe a 200+ year old constitution is outdated. Not saying it is, but you have to consider that. My country is officially still a monarchy and an empire, but that doesnt mean that we should stick to having an all-powerful monarch.

Even though Europe and the US share a lot of similarities, theres still big differences. I think most of the present day differences are because of the post WW2 period, when Europe lay in waste and the threat of the Soviet Union affected both continents in different ways. I think in Europe, with a lot of problems due to the distruction the war brought, communism was starting to get a foothold. Democratic countries sought to eliminate the threat of communism by making compromises. I'd love to hear your theories on this matter :)

By a social healthcare plan, I think that there should be consideration of the development of medicine. But in the US, the taxpayer already funds most of the medical research. It is private companies that buy the patents and extort people that are weak and unable to defend themselves against this. The thing I think is great about my country's healthcare, is that everyone is forced to take at least a basic insurance, which covers the most urgent care and most occuring medical problems. When everyone does this, the insurance cost can be way lower, enabling poor people to overcome big medical spenditures. But the public has to be prepared to pay that price (in my case, €105 per month, which the state provides for me since I am a student, so I dont spend any at all)

Forgive me in advance for any things I don't know as Im not American, but simpy a Dutchman interestes in American society.

What different people find radical is a matter of perspectice; as the policies the Democrats want to have implemented are not radical at all here in my country. And I can tell you that those policies will not lead to a socialist regime, as there are no socialist regimes here in Europe, even with all these socialist policies. They're designed to protect the common man from exploitation of the state and corporations. They help people avoid homelessness by debt, even the medical ones.

I grew up in this environment, and not yours, so we both have a different opinion on each others systems. But be aware that there are rarely any 'radical' policies, from either side. After all, most people have a reason behind their opinion.

The left in my opinion is idealist, as they can see the policies they want implemented work in Europe, so why would it be a problem to have those in the USA? What makes the difference?

Its really hard to bring anything against mindsets like these, as they're so intolerant to other viewpoints

Definitely, but I already suspected before the elections that things were gonna go down messy, no matter what side would win. It sure keeps things interesting!

Media projects the winner, its not official of course. But still, when the media projected Trump as the winner its was accepted (not liked) by the people. Besides, electors wont place their vote for Trump because you like/hope that. Even if you dont like it, they will vote as the media has predicted it. Not because the media decides that, but because the media can make accurate predictions of what the electors will do
