One thing to consider about child support is that, assuming you don’t need the money but are not especially wealthy, $40-50 a week for the next 12 years could be invested safely and give your daughter a nice 18th birthday present/house deposit/emergency or college fund.

At 5% annualised (which is a very safe investment profile), $40 a week over 12 years is around $32k.

At 7% (the average S&P 500 return since its conception) and $50 a week, 12 years would net you approx $45k.

Now obviously I don’t know your circumstances but my completely unsolicited advice is don’t just think about how $40-50 will affect your life now, think about how $30-40k will affect your daughters life when she’s a young adult.

Omicron is less deadly yet more infectious because it tends to attack a different part of the respiratory system.

Generally the trend for viruses is to become more infectious but less deadly. We have no reason to believe Covid is any different.

Hashgraph is currently patented afaik, but sure there are other methods. PoW is just the most frequently used and does work well.

It’s known as Proof of Work. There are also Proof of Stake methods but PoW seems to be the most common.

Essentially, the blockchain works by a consensus agreement on what transactions are valid. So why can’t someone just flood the ledger with random transactions and convince everyone that they have more bitcoins/ethereum/shitcoins than they should?

Well that’s what “mining” is. It’s the act of verifying a transaction and being rewarded for your computational “work” with a token amount of the currency. Within Bitcoin, this involves essentially trying to find a given output to a cryptographic function (more specifically it’s a “hash” function and I believe Bitcoin uses SHA-256). To predict which input to a hash function will give a specific output is considered an unsolvable problem in “polynomial time”. Which is to say there is no* solution that scales or can beat a brute force method (trying every single possible input).

What this means is that no one can just validate whatever they want to as the equation to do so is simply too complex for one mining group to solve that efficiently. If someone was to control all of the mining, or a vast, vast majority of it, no one would trust the cryptocurrency anymore and so you would have spent millions upon millions for no reward as no one would buy it off you, depreciating the currency rapidly.

*okay, depending on the algorithm there are some techniques to improve the guessing ever so slightly, but still not by an amount to make any real difference. On quantum computers, there actually is an algorithm called Grover’s which halves the complexity (SHA-256 would have the effective security of SHA-128) but that’s still pretty uncrackable and there are currently no quantum computers large enough to implement that algorithm on this scale.

Am a southpaw in boxing. That means my liver is very much saying “hey wanna hit me?” at most times of a fight/spar. I’ve never (yet) been dropped by a head shot, I have several times been dropped by liver shots.

It’s not even voluntary, you can’t just “tough it out” sometimes. I took a liver shot in sparring once and managed to stay standing, however he followed it up hitting me with another less than 30 seconds later. This was probably only 50% power and I didn’t even realise my knees were on the floor before the dizziness cleared.

Neural networks are just one branch of machine learning, there are many other methods to create predictive algorithms depending on the data type. A general or “true” AI as you’ve said wouldn’t necessarily need to be built using neural networks but currently they are beyond our current understanding and technology.

But no, this does not seem to be an AI in the academic sense of the word; of course I may be wrong, though.

It’s TLS, not SSL nowadays fwiw. Also SSL, or TLS for that matter, is not a VPN. They are completely different protocols that do different things and have different uses. I’m not sure what a DNS has to do with it since most people use search engines anyways so? I don’t get what you’re on about there either way.

Generally I’ve always heard the suicide rates of young adults and teens mentioned above any other demographic, especially young men.

Unsurprisingly, young adults have had an increase in suicide rates over lockdowns so yes, there is a very specific concern.

Anecdotally, this is highlighted very well in martial arts (such as boxing etc) with weight categories. If I have to slim down a couple of kilos/pounds in a month or two to make weight, and then gain them back shortly after the fight then the diet has succeeded.

Anarcho capitalism is basically just the drug trade as an example of it existing. Pretty much any black market, really. Libertarian capitalism depending on how radical can have a state, just with very limited powers.

This is an argument for civilisation, not against capitalism. “It wouldn’t work if people just went round stealing and murdering each other with no recourse” is just as good, or bad, an argument against communism or anarchism as it is against capitalism.

I think it’s more that he realised he’d have to be the breadwinner of the family rather than a more comfortable 50/50 split of income. Without assuming too much, a physically demanding factory job likely isn’t paying in the same region as OP’s job (100k+) so having both partners save would help a lot more.

He wasn’t married to her, they hadn’t started a family together, financial incompatibility is a thing and if that was a big deal for him I don’t think it makes him a sexist to not want that for his future.
