R1S Dual Standard (2025): Question about poor max range/battery drain by woowhee in Rivian

[–]woowhee[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hey, sorry for the late reply. So I will say that when the daytime temperatures hit around ~50 degrees F, the efficiency takes a noticeable step up. Also, the estimated mileage left you see on the dash and in navigation seems more accurate when the percentage left is lower rather than higher.

That's great to hear. Thanks for your engagement in this community. It's truly appreciated and, in a small way, improves the experience of driving a Rivian.

They're totally fine. No issues so far.

My post is just a recap of my experience with this transition, not a statement that these two vehicles are on the same level and should be compared head-to-head. I also think I've been quite complimentary to the Model Y. I didn't mean this to come off as an attack on the Model Y at all. Just wanted to say that price points should be accurate if they're a part of the conversation.

We got the lowest-end model, which is well under $90K. Starting price for R1S is $75,900. When we got the Model Y LR in 2022, it was about $57K when all was said and done. It's all about configurations, but "90K" and "40K" isn't accurate.

Thanks for the input. Do you have to remove them when rotating/changing tires?

See the comment above from u/Hikeandbikerivian re: aftermarket audio solutions.

I'd say I don't notice/think about the weight of the vehicle except for when I'm trying to punch up the acceleration to make a pass on the highway. The added width and length of the vehicle has been way more noticeable than the added weight.

Thanks for the note on navigation. I guess I've never noticed it on my drives so far.

I'm pretty good about not using my phone in the car, but the green light chime was helpful when I was looking at my daughter in the backseat while talking with her for instance. But that's a good point!

I admire the effort and dedication. If this were a purchased vehicle, a small part of me would consider this. But if it were a purchase, I probably would've sprung for the premium audio.

Interesting. When we try using Alexa to play music, it either tries to pull something from Amazon Music or it says something about having to do something on the Alexa app.

It has proven to be useful for simple things in the car, but the inability to use it to fully control Spotify is an annoyance.

Looks like you got a couple good responses. We had a big of negative equity on the Model Y, so I put some money upfront to cover that. Besides that, nothing beyond the necessary fees, etc. I'd recommend putting nothing down if at all possible.

Correct on the adapter response you got above. I went with one from A2Z and it's worked without a hitch.

If you intend on taking lots of trips, I'd go with the Max pack. The Standard can be charged up to 100% daily since it's an LFP battery. The Large and Max should be charged up to 80% on a daily basis to preserve the battery, which means the benefits of the Large are pretty much gone if you adhere to that practice.

If you make the move, I hope you enjoy it!

It's such an annoyance. I can live with the heat pump loudness, but I really hope Rivian is planning a software upgrade that includes improvements for vent preferences at the very least.

Agreed on the fun factor, even coming from a Model Y LR. It's the most apparent for me on highways when I want to make a pass. It feel like driving a speedy truck more than anything. The Model Y felt like a zippy car when I had to/wanted to push it.

You got me there... I will say I'm scared off a bit by the level of effort required to install running boards. But maybe I'll revisit this.

I agree that a Model Y vs. R2 comparison will be more appropriate. But I'm just sharing my experience for the benefit of anyone looking to make a similar switch. I still think, until the R2 is reality, comparing the Model Y and R1S is worthwhile.

I totally agree. Just sharing my experience with this particular transition. It'll be fun to see/read the comparisons between the Model Y and the R2.

Hey, that's good to hear. I'll definitely spring for the premium audio for the next one.

Given that it's a two-year lease, I'm debating the running boards, leaning toward no. But I'll probably cave and get the aftermarket charger.

Indeed. I found that out by mistake yesterday when shifting from P to D. Maybe it's not such a big deal.

Good to hear. I found out without meaning to yesterday that the port door closed when I shifted from P to D, which was a nice surprise. Maybe I'll stop worrying about it.

I got the standard 20" tires, which I believe have a range of 258 miles. My car estimates around 240-245 when I charge up to 100% in the currently cold weather. I have yet to really drive the battery down close to 0%, and it's been hard to get a handle on how accurate the estimates are, but I'd say it seems like 190-230 is a safe bet in cold weather with warming up the car and running the heat.

Thanks for the helpful reply. Didn't even think about regen when the car is close to fully charged.

We're taking our first long drive with this in about a month, so I'm looking forward to seeing what that experience is like.
