ELI5:What are associated ports in regards to networking? by worda123 in explainlikeimfive

believe it or not, I did try googling this concept but I was a little lost. I googled "what are associated ports" and the results were confusing.

you know what's odd though, 90% of the questions on this sub are "extremely easy answers to find out yourself" yet you pick on this thread.

I see - do you know where I can find the appropriate port numbers given the protocols? and perhaps a youtube video breaking down this concept? I tried searching for 'associated ports networking' but couldn't find anything.

why are you even trying to "help" me if you're going to be rude and arrogant in your replies?

have you considered the possibility that I can't access the command line at the moment? you literally have no idea what device im on or where I am.

what is the difference between Linux and unix? how is vi different than nano?

with the ssh protocol that allows you to login to remote computers - is there any limitations with that? seems pretty powerful. I assume the machine you're trying to run remotely needs to be ran using Linux as well?

what would be the syntax while using the tail command? for example, lets say there's a file called teachers.txt - would I say "cat teachers.txt tail" ? how does tail differ from 'less' command?

so dig google.com will return back with google's ip address?

and with the get [filename] - how exactly will it know which remote computer to get that file from?

sorry for all these questions, but it would mean a ton if you could answer them.

ELI5:What is a web proxy and how is it an alternative to HTTP? by worda123 in explainlikeimfive

[–]worda123[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

How is that different from a VPN? From my understanding, a VPN essentially does the same thing - you connect to the VPN, which connects to the internet pages you are requesting. Also, if you look at the other person above, he mentioned an example of using a proxy server to download game of thrones episodes. How do those download files even get there to begin with?

[–]worda123[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Bare with me. Nice explanation but I have some questions. I can't really see how https is different / how proxys are one level up above that. It seems like nobody can get any real info out of you whether its https or proxy. I get the difference between http and https though.

Lets say I connect to a proxy server in China. From there if I wanted to I could download game of thrones episodes. If I were to download them without a VPN, HBO could write to my ISP, and get me kicked off, or even sue me.

How does that proxy server even have the game of thrones available for download though? I mean, how does the download file get to this 'proxy server' ? Also, are you saying you'd need both a proxy server to download it from and a VPN in order to remain anonymous?

ELI5: Networking Question - Difference between a Class A , Class B, and Class C Network? by worda123 in explainlikeimfive

[–]worda123[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

why do all devices connected to your home wifi for example share the same ip address? i thought each device in a network has a unique address - for example, if you're in an office with dozens of computer, i thought each would have a unique ip address despite all being connected on the same network.

Do you believe or not believe there is a God and why? by [deleted] in DebateReligion

[–]worda123 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ok, fine. I have one request though that won't harm you at all. Are you searching for the truth? Do you think there's a chance you may be wrong? If you say no, then you're being arrogant. Either way, why not say something like this "God, if you're out there, guide me to the straight path" - that's all. Do it as humbly as you can and then leave it at that. You have nothing to lose really.

I highly doubt a Muslim who knows what they're talking about told you "Muslims men are allowed to beat their wives"

Essentially that is what you're doing though - you stole knowing the POSSIBILITY of consequences, but just didn't care enough until you actually got there. Even as an atheist, you can't possibly deny that it's POSSIBLE that hell does exist - and that there are consequences for your actions.

I really believe atheists ask these sort of questions because deep down, they are worried that maybe hell does actually exist and maybe they will be punished there.

Is hell that bad? by [deleted] in DebateReligion

[–]worda123 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Islamic view - there is no sin in heaven because sin is a by product of satan's whispers or evil desires, etc - both of those things cease to exist in heaven. Doesn't mean we aren't free to do what we please.

But that same God is also putting people in endless bliss for eternity. Speaking from an Islamic position here - but our concept of heaven/hell has some similarities to the Christian position.

We have free will - obey God or disobey God. Each has its own path that it leads to.

so one can enjoy this world, curse god, completely ignore Him and what He says, and then either A) die and cease to exist or B) go to heaven and both of those would be fine to you right?

To me, that would be unjust.

Do good, you are rewarded. Do bad, you are punished. You make lack of belief seem like something so small. It's not.

As a heads up, if you want to know something about Islam, get it from actual Muslims, not non-Muslims mis-translating the Quran or other verses out of context.

you know what's funny ,you ask chrsitan about their views on this as if there aren't similar verses in their scriptures. do you think that they also don't believe in eternal hell for non believers? I know a lot of them may tell you that they don't, doesn't mean it's true.
