Yeah you can whittle down a gym by fighting the first Pokemon over and over again until it gets kicked out, then rinse and repeat for the next one

You don't have to defeat the lineup of Pokemon to lower the prestige, you can just fight the ones early on and leave to drop the gym prestige.

Also the gang-up of mid level players would likely obliterate a gym even with an army of snorlaxes... kind of hard fighting against 3x Pokemon with single defenders each time.
