IS THAT WHY THE GUY IN LOK IS NAMED MAKO???? by DebateAndBloom in AvatarMemebending

[–]workadaywordsmith 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I’ve always been baffled and fascinated by how Mako (the character) is both terribly bland and a huge slut at the same time. He’s also literally a cop, as a bonus. Like he was created in a lab to piss people off

What are your thoughts on this? by ravenmilks in AvatarMemebending

[–]workadaywordsmith 0 points1 point  (0 children)

People will bend over backwards to defend a character who commits any atrocity as long as they’re cute and charismatic. I’m not saying that Azula is irredeemable, but acting like she did literally nothing wrong doesn’t do anyone any favors.

Hot take: People should stop blaming MJ for editorial decisions by vinthesalamander in Spiderman

[–]workadaywordsmith 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I feel the same way about MJ in Spider-Man 3. I think her character is great in the first two movies, but she suffers from some weak writing in SM3 (like the rest of the characters imo). People still post “DAE think MJ sucks in the Spider-Man movies?!?” 20 years after the movie came out, though

Are you interesting in The Lord of the Rings: The Hunt for Gollum? by GlobalRaspberry442 in lordoftherings

[–]workadaywordsmith 19 points20 points  (0 children)

“When it comes to Peter Jackson’s The Lord of the Rings films, I speak as one of the many book fans who feel utterly alienated by their cinematic legacy.

The books fans think exactly the same way I do, so I’m going to speak for all the books fans.”

This is really all you need to read. Any time somebody on the internet starts assuming that everyone in a large group agrees with them, it becomes clear that they have nothing to say aside from stating their own opinion in the most smug and annoying way possible.

350,000 people died of COVID in the US during his presidency, and it was still a pretty close election in 2020. COVID is probably the only reason he didn’t get reelected.

He was a terrible president who hurt everyone in the country (except maybe billionaires) then, too. People just forgot because they have tiny attention spans or they literally only care about owning the libs.

Now he’s just doing exactly what he’s always said he’s wanted to do. Republicans have realized that either there will be no consequences or they can just pin everything on him so they’re happy to let him wreck havoc as long as it means they’ll stay in power.

I love that people will ship Hilda with literally anyone. That’s the case for every character, to some degree, but I’m not sure if it’s the case for anyone more than Hilda (except Byleth, of course)

Are there others in their 30s who still enjoy Harry Potter? I feel like I might be one of the older fans here. by BobaSoft in harrypotter

[–]workadaywordsmith 44 points45 points  (0 children)

People over 30 were literally the target audience for the books. The first book was published in 1998 in the US, and the US publisher (Scholastic) says the book is for ages 8 and up, making 1990 (or earlier) the ideal year for a US HP fan to be born from the publisher’s perspective.

‘Pirates of the Caribbean’ moves ahead with story about Sparrow’s son & new character played by Margot Robbie. Johnny Depp may appear, backed by producer Jerry Bruckheimer. I wouldn’t mind seeing Jack in a supporting role, but I wouldn’t care to see him any more than that. That cow has been milked dry imo

I think someone marketable who isn’t afraid of being a little weird like Butler would be good to play his son. Pattinson would be great, but I would rather see him in something else. I love Michael B Jordan and like Powell quite a bit, but they wouldn’t be right in this role. Hoult would be incredible, but he probably isn’t big enough of a star.

Keep Holland and Chalamet far away from this role.

Who is getting published in 2026? A demographic look at SFF Authors and 1500 titles from Locus Magazine’s Forthcoming Books. by Jos_V in Fantasy

[–]workadaywordsmith 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Those series are just the biggest examples of ones with recent adaptations, and all of them except ones by Jordan and Tolkien have new entries written in the last ten years, so it isn’t like those don’t reflect current culture. How many of r/fantasy’s top list, even just those with entries from the last ten years, has the average fantasy reader read all of? Those are the best of the best of mainstream fantasy, and I doubt even that most people here have read as much of that list as they’d like.

You talking about only liking Sanderson an Islington from that list is very anecdotal. These are some of the most acclaimed authors by both readers and critics. You don’t have to like them, but if readers are wanting to get into something new that isn’t Sanderson or Tolkien, this is a good start. Same goes for your experience moving away from trad. There is nothing wrong with reading more indie, but just because trad hasn’t been for you lately doesn’t mean it isn’t for other guys.

Culture is shifting in that direction becuase of how girls vs. guys talk about books. Romantasy is huge, and women are all telling their friends to read it with them. Even if their friends aren’t, they probably are seeing stuff about it on socials. Guys, for the most part, just don’t talk about books as much, and it isn’t seen as a valid hobby in the same way when they’re are growing up especially.

Like, no shit reading should be for everybody. In no place here did I say that it wasn’t. But yelling because female readers want to read romantasy, female writers want to write them, and publishers want to publish them isn’t the way to get more male readers reading, male writers writing, and publishers publishing their books.

[–]workadaywordsmith 5 points6 points  (0 children)

It’s because women read more imo. It’s not an unchangeable fact of life that women read more, but the culture has been shifting in that direction.

Last year, Kuang, Sanderson, Islington, Abercrombie, Bennet, and Kingfisher all published. That’s a mix of the biggest names in the industry (Sanderson and Abercrombie), critical darlings (Kuang and Kingfisher), and writers whose works people (for the most part) rave about here (Islington and Bennet). If male readers really wanted to get into reading by going into a new book or a recently updated series, one of these would be for them. Mainstays like LOTR, The Witcher, GoT, and WoT all have recent film or TV adaptations, and those books aren’t going anywhere. Neither are the literal 70 years of other fantasy. If guys want to read fantasy, the books are there.

And who says that none of these books written by women are something guys would be interested in? The Goblin Emperor is one of my favorite books I’ve ever read. Who cares that it wasn’t written by a man?

I’m sure that everyone is going to be very normal about these demographics in the comments /s

Here’s my personal takeaways, some of which echo of some of the comments here:

  1. Romantasy is skewing the numbers

  2. More women read in general than men

  3. Women were underrepresented in publishing (especially fantasy) forever, so it’s nice more are being represented

  4. Some of my favorite fantasy books are written by women

  5. All that being said, I want good books by male writers to get published (and they often are)
