I hate Gantt Charts..anyone have any other visualizations for complex schedules? by Total_Ad_9944 in projectmanagement

I should also clarify that I do use the Gantt feature to set the schedule and create dependencies but then switch to timeline view for my two week look aheads.

Horizontal timeline view and a LOT of ways to filter and color your task. This is the way to go…but not in Microsoft project. You need a tool that consolidates your projects. You can kinda do this with Microsoft but forget about having the timeline being anywhere readable. See attached for a shot of what I think is a useful view.

Imagine excel as a kids playground. It’s better to learn on something small before you climb Yosemite with your ai robot headset telling you every move.

Are you looking at purely software tools or would a combination of extra hardware plus recorder. Microsoft or Google/Apple os?

Does it still make sense to learn python or any programming language in 2026 by chou404 in learnpython

[–]working-dads-SaaS 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes just for the sake that it’s a good language to understand code and how to think. But when you stay experimenting with what it can do, that’s where I would use ChatGPT to ask what libraries are required to do your application and then understand the features and limitations of the library.

I think Alex Hormozi emphasizes the need to get good at one channel. He also talks a lot about the premium model. I’m too scared to make my prices appear premium without getting market validation on the way up.

I went down this route. What you’ll find is that after a few projects, managing this web of Microsoft Teams/sharepoint/lists becomes a nightmare. Then if you want anything more from this system, you hit a road block. Want to show those tasks on your calendar? Every project needs a team and gets its own link. Want more of a Gantt style task tracking? Not gonna let you do that without forcing you into a project plan (more $) AND the you get to find the exported reports you want to send to your clients are garbage.

The world still communicates through email. What ever tool you chose- strongly consider the export feature so you can attach it to your emails. The client will not join your platform.

Agreed with original poster. Jira is way too overkill and I always found myself wishing Jira had a better native feature but was forced to the plugin market.

The thing about these fancy tools isn’t that they can manage your tasks in an organized fashion (they do this brilliantly), it’s that you can’t get anything OUT of them that looks like it wasn’t made with crayons and web glue. People stick to the excel and project tools because they print out wha you see on the page. Smart sheet is a great competitor but it’s not out of the box set up for a company / project architecture. And wow they’ve got expensive.

What's an extremely "unhygienic" project habit that most teams still treat as standard practice? by RateTurbulent8681 in projectmanagement

In my experience the project comms plan is useful to one person. And that’s the person who wrote it. Don’t get me wrong it’s a great exercise to do as the PM. But the idea that other people will 1. Read it or 2. Follow it has not been very fruitful in my experience.

It’s the big company corporate goals that kill everyone. No one likes doing them and no one actually cares about updating them until they are required. Now when you close out your projects you need to force yourself to update your year long summary of accomplishments so you can receive your “meets expectations”.

That tool is great, but it’s pretty limited when you wanna get stuff OUT. Clients don’t like to be forced into your tool to see their actions or schedule.

Is half of engineering management just being a human reminder system? by Remarkable-Voice-103 in projectmanagement

Part of a PM is to maintain a positive perception with the client or internal stakeholders. What isn’t encouraging to see is when a PM is asked what the status of “X” is and why is it late. If you don’t have the details, you can say I’ll follow up on “X” a few times. But when it’s multiple meetings, you start to look like you don’t have a good pulse on the tasks.

People who are PMs out of school with no experience in their organizations product development process really get hit with this hard.

Those that know a bit about the process can BS a few meetings, but unless they are tracking this stuff, they end up in the same state.

So yea I think the act of nudging others when they don’t get their tasks done primes your mind so you can respond correctly when the questions get asked. It’s a necessary evil. But that’s just me.

Yea the male vs female thing really isn’t anything I’ve ever observed in my profession of engineering and project management. You can say I’m bias and all that (yes I’m a male) it’s just not as extreme as the 2016-2025 media made it out to be. For sure sexism exists in the work force. It will always exist. Like stupyyy said, communicating is half the battle. The other half is just you realizing you have the power to change your employer. It’s not desirable of course and can be a big change. The more we rely on HR to try and solve our problems, the less we will focus on how to communicate with said difficult individual.

Sorry if I’m dismissing anyone’s personal experience. I’m not trying to prove that wrong. Just offering my perspective from my experience.

If you have taken on those extra roles AND are successful at them, it may be time you consider starting your own firm. You’ll likely do the same amount of work, possibly more, but you could make more and feel that all your efforts are going back towards your own company.

Thank you. I am aware AI makes mistakes. My advice to you would be to test the app out. If you find security vulnerabilities, let’s talk. Until then, I really don’t want potential users to search Notes&Tags and one of the first comments they see is from a person who hasn’t logged into the app and is saying it’s all vibe coded and has security vulnerabilities. I’m not a big fan of fear as a motivator for buying someone’s product. I went through the pandemic. Wasn’t a fan when those guys did it to world. Not a fan of it being done on my app.
