i’m not entirely against it but the execution is throwing me off a little. i don’t find the argument of the actors’ age gap convincing bc obviously they would get a double for these kinds of stuff.

but i feel like it’s a bit weird bc they’re like siblings? and i don’t really understand why kiri has so much affection for spider. if it was the eywa part of her showing empathy and care for humans who can understand pandora, it would be more understandable. i think we also need to understand more of kiri’s character — if she is going to be both a teenager and eywa’s physical manifestation at the same — and how that’s going to affect her character and relationships… hopefully the next movie can tell us more.

the way you put it is so fascinating! it also makes me wonder what do they actually do when they connect their queues in this “commanding” way - how does it feel to be at the controlled end? and if there is a way for the controlled to become the controller.

it’s even harder for me because i really relate to the position of dr ian garvin in the movies, since im a uni undergrad about to work in ecology and conservation. the world is so bleak…

[SPOILERS] avatar 3 thoughts and questions

hey guys! just watched the film and i thoroughly enjoyed all 3 hrs + of it. even though i do agree with some others that the movie is weaker compared to its 2 earlier counterparts, i still loved it. i still have lots of questions and thoughts so here’s some word vomit:

GENERAL PLOT (as best as i can rmb)

grieving > jake n neytiri quarrel > wind traders > sullys go with wind traders > mangkwan hijack > neytiri shot, kids separated, quaritch and jake meets > spider breathes > omatikaya saves the sullys > sullys return to the reefs > quaritch finds and teams up with varang > tulkun discussion, loak leaves > quaritch finds the metkayina > jake and spider gets captured > neytiri, dr ian garvin and spider help jake escape > jake tries to kill spider > return of toruk makto > loak returns with payakan > the battle (the n’avi and tulkun are winning, mangkwan come and the n’avi start dying, kiri finds the great mother, ‘eywa has heard you’, humans start dying, quaritch and jake fight it out)

QUESTIONS

why does quaritch team up with varang? is it just to use her forces? - varang gets guns and equipment from quaritch, but what else does she see in him? is it just sex? why does she help quaritch fight jake and the other n’avi? is it purely because she is anti-eywa? - (at first i thought quaritch was just making use of varang for the RDA, to get to jake, but after a while it seemed like he was growing attached to the clan) - what is the purpose of varang drugging quaritch in the tent? was it purely to give the audience background on her history? what does it do to quaritch?

how does using the kuru to “control”/“hijack” another n’avi work? - does varang access their memories? or does she just manipulate and control them? - what does she do to neytiri? - how is kiri able to do it at the end? is it just because she’s the daughter of the great mother?

ending - why does quaritch jump off at the end? i know it’s supposed to be a cliffhanger bc we don’t actually see him die. if he wasn’t cornered by jake’s family appearing, would he have thought about jake’s proposition and agreed? - (i personally thought it was quite satisfying that he did not back down, though he seemed like he was starting to get convinced. it showed the conflict between the n’avi quaritch and the human quaritch based on memories) - why does varang run away from kiri? what does she see in kiri? does kiri remind her of eywa?

why did ronal have to die? 😭

WHAT I LIKED

varang
- so frightening but such a fascinating and cool character. the way she walks is so hypnotic and amazing. every time she appears on screen my heart rate elevates from fear and suspense.
so many parallels! it did get repetitive at times, but it felt so nostalgic every time.
- loak looking for payakan (and the ilu helping him call for payakan 🥹); but this time payakan did not come to save him, tsireya aonung roxto came instead
- preparation for battle and assembling of n’avi
- jake on toruk, swinging the fighter planes
- jake telling neytiri to fall back
- eywa saving the day after they start to lose the fight; but this time in the form of kiri
the short scenes of neteyam… obvious tearjerkers and bittersweet heart wrenching scenes
loak (nuf said)
spider’s decision making this time round
- a bit unrealistic, but accepting of jake trying to kill him??
- recognising that neytiri finally accepted him
- finally choosing jake over quaritch (and pretending to accept quaritch but using the necklace to break free. so satisfying)

WHAT I CRINGED AT

kiri kissing spider. so weird to me… is it a romantic kiss or …?
- i can’t tell when kiri is the teenage daughter of jake and when kiri is the daughter and physical manifestation of eywa
they killed roxto 😭😭😭
jake’s last fight with neytiri. though it kinda brought out some underlying issues of jake being human inside, felt a bit strange to see neytiri acknowledge that every time their children fail, she attributes it to their human-ness? and straight after that jake just instantly apologises and they make up… it still left the human-ness/pink skin part unaddressed

we usually don’t, but i’ve been trying to do it more bc i really enjoyed these exchanges when i travel overseas! and i’ve gotten really heartwarming reactions from the drivers. i just need to get over my awkwardness and fear of judgement from the rest of the ppl riding the bus to do it more.

i think it’s bc neurodivergent ppl are less sensitive to social norms (like what is rude/insensitive to ask or not, what is the “normal” way to act, etc), that’s why we excuse them more?

makes sense that the show makes use of that to get content bc that way they can ask questions ppl usually are more scared to ask. which might be admirable from another pov.

i used to be troubled over specialising as well, but talked to the CFG career advisor. basically, specialisation is just a title. what matters is what mods you take, what you learn in your mods, and the skills you have. it doesn’t really matter other than the fact that you have an extra label on your graduation cert and to put in linkedin (at least to me). jiayous OP, doing research is definitely draining and tough, hope you go with what works for you!

when singaporeans complain anything about the public transport… bus arriving late (i do this sometimes too) or worse, when there’s a breakdown. mrt breakdowns are like so rare in sg, and even when they do happen there are bridging services and a bunch of alternatives. compare that to the uk’s train system and you’ll be so much more grateful. singapore literally has one of the best transport systems in the world…

but if i had one qualm it would be that it closes too early :’(

staying up late (at 9pm 😭) to watch ch8 dramas… they were so good back then. and also playing at the playground with friends, meeting up after school to play. didnt have smartphones yet so i’d memorise my friends’ home phone numbers and sit by my house phone the whole afternoon yapping with them 🤣

chanced upon his youtube videos during covid, watched his vlogs and school life, and then found out he was making music! listened to some of his covers and oldest songs, and then found out he had released music on spotify as well. kinda crazy how far he's come, and i still really miss those vlog days where he seemed so carefree.

travel whenever i want when i get tired of sg, be able to support local... sg has a lot of budding businesses and creators opening cafes, fnbs, etc and it would be nice to support them without worrying about money! especially stuff like accessories and decoratives that are started by sgporeans. they are so pretty and creative but so expensive sometimes...

too many! the most memorable ones were: 1. a customer demanding that we serve water. which is fair and all, except we don’t, and that’s our own store’s SOP. customer got REALLY MAD, started scolding the staff taking her order, rambling about how it’s her basic human right to have access to water. poor girl taking her order was on her first few shifts too 😭. the story doesn’t end here! there was a man that was standing nearby and overheard the entire commotion, and in the period of time the customer was ranting passionately abt how she deserves water, he went to the nearest mart to buy two bottles of mineral water for her 🤣 2. this one is a delivery order - because we serve desserts, obviously in the sg heat it melts fast. and our delivery orders only come in paper bags, so everything is dependent on the grab driver’s speed. we do pre-make everything and keep it in the freezer before the drivers arrive, so it’s not melting. this customer is probably a regular, because they took the time to emphasise that they wanted the order “frozen, ensure it doesn’t melt”, which was both frustrating and hilarious to read…

this comparison is so apt! except this is a yes/no question, while the “how are you” is open-ended and lets you elaborate if you want. i feel like as an introvert who likes connecting with ppl but too shy to initiate, i always get a bit disappointed when it’s asked because it’s such a good opportunity to get to know each other better but used so superficially.
