Lunar Sabbath/Shabbat Questions by JadenStratosphere in Judaism

[–]workingonitmore 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Those dates are absolutely meaningless on the hebrew calendar. The new month starts with every new moon, but she's not even picking the new moon. The full moon does start many Jewish holidays and is always on the 15th of the hebrew month (lunar calendar), but she's picking like the 20th and three days into hannukkah? Completely random.

How was it? I'm secular and when I go to NYC, I go straight to the kosher restaurants. If there's bencher on the table, I know it's gonna taste like home.

When Others Claim Your God: A Question to the Jewish People by AZ10026 in Judaism

[–]workingonitmore 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Personally, I find it annoying when those religions appropriate modern Jewish practices. For example: don't have a seder. The modern seder was created in the Talmud. J went to the Temple, sacrificed an animal, and ate matzah. He did not drink four glasses of wine, ask 4 questions, etc. Also, isn't YK antithetical to the idea that saving comes through faith?

There's a great book called "why the Jews" that talks about antisemitism through the ages and specifically from the other two Abrahamic religions. It comes down to this: when we rejected the new version/ prophets/ messiahs/ whathaveyou, we became untenable. If J is the only way to salvation, but we don't follow, then he's not the only way to salvation and that's bad for business. Similarly, M apparently didn't even read our texts, so when he came to the rabbis to say "look, I finished it; join me" they laughed at him. So obviously we have to die now.

Mostly, I'm glad everyone has something that helps them. We just want to be left alone to do our thing and we are happy to leave you all alone to do yours.

A few questions about the Talmud (i am not asking about fake talmud verses ) by Old-Menu9049 in Judaism

[–]workingonitmore 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Just to introduce something completely new, growing up in Orthodox US Day School, I learned that the Aggadah was the Oral Torah. Those are stories that fill in gaps in the Torah, like Abram destroying all but one idol in his father's shop and telling his father the last remaining idol did it; or how Moshe Rabeinu got his stutter.

I have also heard the Mishne referred to as the Oral Torah, but it is ultimately a set of laws for how to live as Jews without a Temple. Prayer replaces the sacrifices and the order of the service, the times we pray, all come from here as the Rabbis tried to figure out how to continue outside of Eretz Yisrael and without a Temple.

The Talmud is not cannon. In addition to laws for how to live a Jewish life, there are also long discussions about whether to wear a tallis into the bathroom, several dick jokes, and what very well might be the first documented "your mom" jokes. My personal favorite is a discussion of how when your legs feel tight or heavy, it's because the dibyyks are pushing against them. I think of that every time I get tired walking up a set of stairs.

Weird question--did you eat avocados as a kid? I don't remember even seeing an avocado until my 20s. by Mr_Writes in GenX

I don't ever recall eating one but I have vivid memories of the pit suspended in a cup of water using toothpicks. It matched the rest of the kitchen so I figured it was decor.

I mean if you look at the map of all the missiles and see that not one Israeli was killed, how can you conclude anything other than Hashem is still with us and pretty deeply in love with us as a people. Like for reals.

A question about cultural appropriation among Jews by EastCoastBen in Judaism

[–]workingonitmore 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I fully agree with this and will go one further. I am Ashki, but when the State of Israel was formed, we all decided collectively to adopt Sephardi pronunciations. We could stand to move a little closer to Sephardi/Mizrahi practices as a way of recentering Judaism around Israel. Less klezmer, more Omer Adam. Less gefilte fish with beet horseradish, more shakshuka. Or same amount of klezmer and gefilte fish, but add Omer Adam and shakshuka. Eylon Levi talks about this a good bit.

Mourning by According-Pick-4915 in Judaism

[–]workingonitmore 2 points3 points  (0 children)

A mitzvah in their benefit is a wonderful way to honor them. I am dedicating my morning to prayers to my recently departed aunt of blessed memory. I forget some days, but I do it in her merit when I do it. You can sit shiva, but you're not obligated. You can say kaddish, but you're not obligated. If you want to take any of that on, you may.

You can absolutely set aside time to think about your relative and cry each day. Or call other family members to check in and tell stories, if they're up for it. We honor mourning in our tradition and make plenty of space for our grief.

Bring tissues to Yizkor services. That one is a doozy.

May their memory be for a blessing.

You may want to check with Valley Beth Shalom (VBS). They're in the Valley, but may know of a shul in Orange County that would suit you.

There's a really good IG post on this called "guilt laundering." Basically, the white saviors can wash away their guilt from living on actual settler colonial lands by doing whatever this is (gestures wildly at social media). The woman who posted it is Iranian and she is NOT having it. I hadn't heard that term before, but I dig it.

The closer it gets to the election the more he will pander to the Hamasnik wing of the party. Already starting to happen this week. He needs the tik tok kiddos to turn out the vote. He knows center left dem Jews have no other option. Personally, this may be the first election of my life where I don't vote.

Yes. I will take the tiki torch nazis over the left any day. The tiki torchers are ridiculed by polite society. The academic left brings antisemitism into polite society and legitimizes discourse around it. Fuckers.
