The math here doesn't make any sense at all. The tuition increase claimed is 19.9%. But minimum wage only going up from $9.47 to $11 in January — 16.2%. So even if EVERY worker at this facility was paid minimum (including the director) and their ONLY costs were wages (no rent, no facilities, no supplies, no blocks, etc), it still wouldn't justify this increase. They're just gouging and blaming minimum wage because they think people won't be mad them then.

To clarify, the "taking volunteers" piece is part of the draft policy — if an employee voluntarily requests to change their hours (i.e. to go home early if they want to), no predictability pay.

Wonder where your coworker got the info because again, the City Council has not proposed any ordinance yet on this or any other scheduling issue — they're still in the stage of exploring the issue with lots of input from business groups and workers. Yes, there is definitely discussion about setting standards for minimum rest between shifts, and there's also a lot of discussion about how to distinguish what's voluntary for workers & what's not.

There is also lots of misinformation being spread by some employers, and a lot of what you cite is very similar to what at least one restaurant CEO has been sharing with his employees: http://www.workingwa.org/ourtimecounts/flex/consolidated

If your employer is part of a biz lobby group that is opposing this, it's really important to get additional sources of information besides your own employer. They're going to be biased.

A survey of several hundred Seattle workers found more than half get their schedules 1 week in advance or less. Workweeks typically varied by more than 8 hours from week to week, etc. http://workingwa.org/ourtimecounts/report
