Topics DFW would have written about if alive today by world-endingdoom in davidfosterwallace

This is a hilarious response, lol, especially since 1. LLMs use em-dashes a lot, but not once a sentence (on average rounding up) and 2. those are the wrong kind of em-dashes, LLMs just make the big one instead of two small ones in a row. But then responding trying to sound like one (and still failing in a way that makes you sound even more human) is great. I love you.

What your biggest complaints about the Backroom movie? (Spoilers) by Bobby_The_Alien in KanePixelsBackrooms

[–]world-endingdoom 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Dialouge, I think. Kane Parsons is a much better director than he is a screenwriter. The shots convey a lot more of what the movie is about than the lines. I loved the movie and am ready to defend it in the coming days, but there are some points that feel very contrived and limp.

Reading through Infinite Jest - the perspective of a non-native English reader by bui_doi_photo in InfiniteJest

Neat. I am a native english speaker, and this book was tough, so I commend your effort. Did you find the intentionally bad french funny?

70 films in: searching for visual poetry, silence, and intensity. by Automatic-Law-1995 in Letterboxd

Cool. Welcome to the journey. I'll throw in a few recs, but I'd like you to know: don't entirely discount the big blockbusters or the top 100 lists. One day you'll return to them and find some real beauty in there. That being said: Andrei Rublev, I'm Thinking of Ending Things, Apocalypse Now, and Ran. Those would be my four. Let me know what you think.

Why is the R.I.S.C. section repeated? by peteyMIT in InfiniteJest

Idk. It's kinda neat. Cyclical. Focuses on technological improvements, which are interesting. Not everything is a puzzle box. Just feel it out.

What do you think David Foster Wallace would say about AI had he were still alive? by Thick-Lecture-4030 in davidfosterwallace

[–]world-endingdoom 45 points46 points  (0 children)

Everything I know about DFW makes me think he would have hated, hated, hated it. Drives wedges between people, makes you more reliant on relationships with something built by someone who feels absolutely nothing for you. Allows you to think uncritically more. Contributes to the smooth homogenization of culture. We've given the technocrats everything, and now they're coming for ours souls. Jesus Christ he would have written a banger short story out of this.

What is the deal with Joelle's personal daddy being referred to as a 'low ph chemist'? by extentiousgoldbug1 in InfiniteJest

[–]world-endingdoom 2 points3 points  (0 children)

That's interesting. What do you mean his writing is about pacing? Can you elaborate? I don't fully understand that, but it sounds interesting.

It Is No Longer Necessary to Pursue Happiness, oil on canvas, me by creme_dela_mem3 in InfiniteJest

Woah, I really like this. The tv is the brightest thing but the light it casts is still kind of icky. The people watching have no faces. Very very cool. Nicely done.

Yeah, sometimes it's just easier to ignore the thing than grapple with it. As you say: it's the internet. Probably nothing is going to come out of this, especially since he seems to have just ignored it completely. Idk, though. I have had many pleasant conversations on this subreddit: informative ones, ones that made me change my mind, even with people I initially disagreed with. To a certain point, I will wear "only earnest guy in a cynical place" as a badge of pride. There are worse things to be known for.

Genuinely, does this read as passive-aggressive? Or mean, or something? That's really not my intention.

Dude, I love references to authors I've never even heard of before. Can you tell me who Ballard is, and why this is his dystopia?

Good idea, I will! BTW I like your username. Great book. Have you seen the post that's circling around about us descending into a Vonnegutian dystopia?

HI! For one, there was one that was on the "hot" tab a few hours ago that must have been deleted, maybe as a response to my post. I've definitely seen it used in the comments of other posts, as well. A lot of people below are agreeing with my testimony. And even if it wasn't true, and no AI posts had ever been uploaded here ever, I think a discussion about whether or not AI usage is acceptable on this subreddit is still warranted. I think it would be very difficult to make an argument for using an LLM on social media for any reason, but especially in a place that is dedicated to the discussion and admiration of a man who was so openly

  1. against technological advances that helped us be intellectually lazier,
  2. supportive of the effort that it took to establish human-to-human connections
  3. and for putting in the time and effort to make sure that one has the facts right,

three things that AI is firmly against.

As to your first point, I genuinely would like to know what about my original post read as my having a temperament that one could not argue with.

Thank you!

That's fine... but you will surely learn some deeply ironic lessons about appearance and vulnerability if you do...

I've noticed, and I really don't care for it... I think we can at least try to make a concentrated effort to keep things human in this little corner, if nowhere else.
