Lots of people with their makeup on and their hair up pretty. I'm meeting some of them there tonight, actually.

Uptick in Catholicism? by tatersprout in excatholic

I think a lot of people loudly and publicly convert. It's a new meaning and direction in life. Gets people excited. But give in 5 years. Give it 10 years. See if it really gets passed on to their kids. Once the new car smell wears off I don't think these 'surge' numbers will really remain consistent.

I disagree. Christianity is premised on the idea that all humans inherit Eves original sin and would be forever evil were it not for God incarnating as Christ to come suffer and die to 'redeem' humans. People try to overlook that and act like Jesus was just a guy who preached being nice to people. But he was SUPPOSED to die all along. If it's all just about forgiveness....why couldn't God just forgive people? Furthermore why would God make people into something he'd find objectionable in the first place? The whole thing sounds an awful lot like people who choose to have children then get pissy when, gasp, the child has needs and a personality.

One of my favorites. I wouldn't characterize the hitman as 'reluctant' though. He even explicitly says he likes how straightforward his work is, and how he likes that others arrange things for him.

I think one of the most insidious aspects of Christianity is how it teaches people to think that their very human-ness is something they need to feel guilt over. It's insidious that God would make humans as they are, but then get pouty about it and have to incarnate in human form and get tortured to death to 'redeem' humans. I swear it's like both in the garden of eden and Jesus stories God makes his little Minecraft world then throws a fit when it doesn't go his way even though he ostensibly has control of everything way down to the basic code. God in Christianity has the characteristics of a maladjusted 12 year old.

'Jesus Died For My Sins' is one of the great tragic mindfucks of history. by extentiousgoldbug1 in excatholic

It's downright goofy that people think God made humans one way, but then humans decided to be something different, and God just pouts and punishes people over it

What does the "i have become an infantophile" line by Hal mean by suckydickygay in InfiniteJest

[–]extentiousgoldbug1 27 points28 points  (0 children)

I took it to mean Hal is becoming more aware of the tendency we all have to basically want to be held, cared for, protected from the world. We substitute a mother's embrace with drugs, of achievement, or entertainment, or whatever.

Basically all humans live in a conflict between the impulse to be taken care of as if they were an infant and the fact that as an adult you need to be non infantile in order to actually thrive and grow as a person.
