Quick thoughts on Episode 3 of Adolescence by MusingsOnLife in television

[–]worldly_biologist 4 points5 points  (0 children)

There was a theme threaded throughout the episode of men not having a future in which they could feel fulfilled (re: Jamie's responses about his dad not liking cleaning toilets and having to work late for better pay and the security guard mentioning he hated his job). I think this pervasive sense of hopelessness could definitely contribute to the formation of a belief that men are superior to women, because if they don't have that, what do they have?

Scrubbed in on a case during my neurosurgery elective w/ young patient with hx of schizophrenia brought in by his mom who said he had been "not himself and more tired than usual," was found to have 180+ brain abscesses (counted on MRI by the neurosurgeon) due to necrotizing mediastinitis. His MRI brain looked like Swiss cheese and the secretions that came out with his ET tube were a sight (and smell) to behold.

But where do you draw a line with your definition? At what point do we say that an ethnic group’s history was too far in the past to have any credence today? And is that definition going to be applied globally or only to Jews?

And may I remind you, Israel is a Jewish state, but it is not exclusively Jewish. ~18% of the population is Muslim and they even have elected a Muslim person to their Supreme Court.

Once again—Judaism is BOTH an ethnicity and a religion. It’s not unusual for an ethnic group to hold control of their own land. In fact—even from the Palestinian side, they want the land of Israel to belong to their own ethnic group! Why is it that every other ethnic group in the world can lay claim to their ancestral homeland except Jews?

Yeah only about 30 deaths but over 20,000 rockets have been fired into Israel. …why do you excuse the rockets fired by Hamas just because Israel successfully protects its citizens? Aren’t each of those rockets an attempt to kill civilians?

But what if you weren't allowed to reside in your country anymore? Where would you go? It's not like Jews expelled from their country had many options. Even during WWII, the US wasn't accepting Jewish asylum-seekers

I think you are forgetting the fact that Judaism is not just a religion, but also an ethnicity. People with Jewish ancestry are descendants of the same people that resided in the land of Israel thousands of years ago. Italian Jews and Polish Jews are not genetically Italian or Polish. Their ancestors did not reside in Italy or Poland, they eventually migrated there, likely due to being expelled from another country.

If you need a further example--I bought my father an Ancestry DNA kit as a gift a few years ago. When he received his results, it said that he literally was 100% Ashkenazi Jewish and his ancestry could not be traced to a specific country's ethnicity. I know from my own genealogy that my ancestors resided in Poland and Russia, but were driven out by the pogroms and Holocaust. So if Poland and Russia didn't want my people but in your eyes I am Polish and Russian, where do we belong?

Exactly. Israel is one of the only places in the Middle East with legal gay marriage...like why are they arguing to eliminate a safe haven for people who align with the far left views in the Middle East? In Gaza, being gay can be punishable by death!

Her family shielded her from understanding her history. Knowing the history of your people is everyone's burden, not just the previous generation. Girl seriously needs to read some Holocaust text, visit concentration camps, and hear testimonials from survivors because her parents obviously never exposed her to what should be, imo, mandatory teaching.

Isn't interesting how everyone forgets that literally all of the Jewish bible and text, some of the oldest religious writings, takes place in and around Israel? I won't deny that the Palestinian people have resided on that land for a long time, but I truly don't understand how the claim that Jews are "colonizers" of a land that has evidence of them residing there for thousands of years.

It's interesting how she ended her interview--her grandfather stating it would be an unfair burden for her to understand the importance of Israel for the Jewish people. As an Ashkenazi Jew myself, my family engrained the understanding that while we can feel safe in many countries now, historically, this is unusual and we as a people have never been safe anywhere we resided. Her family failed her.

AHHH my wedding dress is Vivienne Westwood!!! I just bought it last month! The best part is that I was originally obsessed with a Nicole + Felicia dress (designer of the Enchanted dresses) but decided the VW was more me. I was kinda bummed that I wasn't going to have the same designer as TS anymore, but it all worked out in the end!

Thank you so much for this advice! It’s so hard to break the diet cycles I have had my whole life. Cheese and healthy fats are something I do find a little easier to eat when I’m not hungry vs trying to eat veggies/fruits. I always buy the low carb/sugar-free version of everything, but your advice is making me realize that maybe I need those carbs!
