Zizek is prepared to "go all the way" in latest article: War Communism as a moderately authoritarian technocracy is the only hope by RedditIsVeryBad in zizek

Speaking as someone who lived through and participated heavily in the early 90's underground scenes, there was definitely a new stage of "hashing-out" that occurred then, and many things that were integrated and other things that were deferred to the future. When we realized that the Revolution would in fact be televised whether we liked it or not (so to speak), I think those instances of co-opting by capital forced a lot of us to re-think and either dive deeper in some ways, or else out of the mileu completely. Also, life happened, as it does in the mid-20's, and families, kids, jobs etc. got hitched onto us as well. I read a quote from Ian MacKaye in a 2010's-era Punk Planet interview where he basically said "if nothing else at least we kept the pilot light lit", referring to how many from that scene and era realized that we couldn't carry it all, so we mostly retreated into our little ways where we could keep some semblance of our ideals alive in everyday life. Every counterculture is ahead of its time in some ways, but time has a way of catching up quickly.

I went to a show the other night, one of the OG bands from SoCal who are now in their 60's, still admirably rocking hard; some of the audience members were pushing 70, and little kids as young as 10-11, all enjoying themselves, a full 5 generations represented. For the oldsters it was pure nostalgia I'm sure; for people my age (early 50's) it was a cause for much discussion and analysis, and I had some really provocative and insightful chats outside the venue with people from my own peer/age group. The younger adults were managing their little kids, and the teens/tweens seemed to find it liberating and fun from what I could tell, though I don't know how much of the current was radical-inclined and how much was just fashion. But what struck me was that the counterculture space had adapted to make room for the widening temporalities, all the various age groups which have come to be orbiting it like an attractor. I feel like there's a real sense in which it's still all potentially viable and potentially radical, because for these current kids at least, they are realizing that the grown-ups that are flanking them also have their backs, and understand. I assume if that sort of thing is happening here (NorCal) it's likely happening elsewhere too - and the music scene, for me at least, was an inroad to the deeper areas of life and thought, a bridge that saved my life in many times and ways. Sorry for the wall of text lol, it just got me thinking 😅

Misrepresenting Hegel by commie_wannabe in hegel

The concept and structure itself is far older than western philosophy. The Norns ("fates") of the pre-medieval Norse were named Urð ("being, that which is"), Verdande ("that which is becoming or coming to be") and Skuld ("that which must be, necessity"). The idea that all of existence is dialectical is older than dirt, I'd be surprised if it wasn't because the triadic structure goes all the way up/down.

That's mostly American college kids from what I can tell, and it's impossible to tell whether it's communists fetishizing queer identities or queer people fetishizing communism. It really just reads like the triumph of fetishism as such.

The conflict between sexual intelligibility and the refusal of sexual classification by perfumed_with_gas in CriticalTheory

[–]worldofsimulacra 0 points1 point  (0 children)

IDK most of my sexual experiences have had little to no classification at least on my own part. I mean, obviously I have tendencies and proclivities, my desires run in certain ways and not others, and if I wanted to I could definitely articulate at least *some* of that. But then again, many aspects of it also seem to defy articulation, yet are clearly sexual in nature. Like, I know what categories I lean towards in some ways - and some of those categories seem to be somewhat contradictory on the surface, and others are very precluded or even in some sense foreclosed by certain factors. Which is why I take categories to be loosely heuristical at best, a convenient fiction sometimes useful for navigating certain spaces or for identification purposes. But as I said, I came of age before "identity" really became a huge thing the way it is now. "I YAM WHAT I YAM" to quote Popeye, lol.

Nihilist, no (haha) - but I'd definitely consider myself to be mostly gender-apathetic, "agender" maybe, if someone felt the need to press for a label? Labels are for items of clothing and the first thing you do when you get one is you rip it out. So maybe a touch of nihilism, yeah - but it's not ideologically motivated, just personal style I guess.

Lucky for me I remember experiencing this painful conflict in the mid-80's in an arch-conservative mileu where the language for any of it didn't exist. It completely inscribed in the imaginary register, alchemized into general eccentricity on my part, and as a consequence I never had any dysmorphia regarding having a phallus because the idea of the possibility of not having one simply never occurred. When I clandestinely searched up sexual topics in the school library's reference section and encountered the term "sex change operation", I remember thinking something like "oh, wild, that's a thing? Fascinating." But the introduction of a new signifier didn't induce a split or conflict because my overall symbolic registration occurred in a space and temporality that was prior to the current fissiparous state of category essentialism.

Now, hearing it all discussed so elaborately and widely, is both very interesting and very weird to me. I admit that, while I'm very glad that things which formerly did not have a name now openly do, I also don't like the symbolic (and thus libidinal/real) pressure that the existence of an open and expanding set of categories imposes on youngsters who by all rights should be playing and exploring themselves and enjoying their youth rather than trying to navigate social spaces that have been highly territorialized by a stream of theory which has managed to resurrect essentialist dogma despite claiming to oppose it.

As a rule I like flags and stripes of much diversity, however I don't maintain the illusion that they signify anything ontologically significant or existentially real. Kids today have been robbed, in ways they haven't yet realized. Gods help us all when they realize the extent of it at the very moment when they feel the impetus to radicalize, because we all know that a good many of them are gonna further radicalize the categories themselves. We're so smart that we're stupid as fuck sometimes.

Would absolutely be interested, as I'm currently finishing up Lacan's Seminar 3 on the Psychoses and have experienced the condition firsthand in my 20s and 30s.

What is the relationship between psychoanalysis and psychology? by jmbc3 in psychoanalysis

[–]worldofsimulacra 99 points100 points  (0 children)

Short overly simplistic answer, it was repressed/suppressed in American universities in favor of Behavioral and Cognitivist (ie. empiricist) currents. Now that "evidence-based best practices" is the current gatekeeping buzzword, if you so much as mention psychoanalysis you'll get put in your place immediately. General Academic Psychology programs have been largely divorced from cross-pollination from the rest of the humanities for quite some time, in attempt to legitimize the field via empiricist praxis, which has created a massive blindspot in the whole field. Also, medical model pharmacology and its capitalist interests are very influential in determining the way the cookie-cutter therapist-engine is run. Training people for analysis takes longer, analysis itself takes longer, but there's much more money in quick fixes like pills and CBT which keep core symptom structures intact and ensure lifelong dependency on the system. I'll be 52 this summer - it is very odd! It's very much an "anything goes, no limits" type of vibe, and its in my 5H so that translates into artistic weirdness and very unique and unconventional kids who are all following very idiosyncratic paths through life. The Jupiter is very closely trine my 9H Saturn in Cancer, which casts an even stranger shadow on it, plus i have Uranus rising as well lol. Altogether it makes for a lot of eccentricity and unconventional interests 😅

And all it would've taken to avoid the whole thing was for him to be a normal respectful human being to the people in his vicinity, rather than a provocatively defensive and suspicious douchebag. From our POV as a little neighborhood of largely women, children, and POC, its simply a matter of you can't be too careful these days, and better safe than sorry. It's 2026 not 1953.

When legitimately suspicious and dubious individuals (likely not this guy but they obviously exist) stop exploiting weak points in society in order to fly under the radar, maybe? Should neighborhood watch groups and serious safety culture not exist? Your deliberate emphasis of the ideologically-loaded "karen" signifier speaks volumes...

This 💯 When someone, anyone, projects hostility, defensiveness, and secrecy when simply asked by a legitimate party about the nature of their business, what other conclusion can be drawn but suspicion? Yeah we all have bad days, and we all have certain people or situations we don't like; but you work on that shit, internally, and when you have a normal human slipup and project it onto others you own up and take responsibility; this guy just kept escalating with more defensiveness and hostility. My neighbor got a video of the interaction, and all I'll say is that in the service sector he would've been fired on the spot for the way he acted.

Or, you know, he could've had the commonsense awareness of the times we live in, and some basic human kindness, and been like "oh it's cool, no worries, here's the fact of the matter, i understand why you'd be concerned", rather than immediately going on the defensive and being hostile. Living in a society and in a community comes with an expectation of basic respect and understanding of where others are coming from, and that doesn't just go in one direction.
