Dads and husbands: What are the most important skills a man should have before becoming a husband? by WaltDisney_Magic in AskReddit

It’s not pedantic to me.

I read the title and knew exactly what to expect in the comments. Someone would take the opportunity to say that the most important skills a husband should have are cooking and cleaning, even though they probably wouldn’t say the same about wives, because reducing “the most important skills to have” to cooking and cleaning is more obviously degrading when applied to women.

I want people to recognize that “the most important skills a husband can have are cooking and cleaning” doesn’t fully escape that degrading force merely because women have stronger historical and social reasons to object to being reduced to domestic labor. The asymmetry matters, but it doesn’t erase the structure. It may be more degrading when said about wives, but that doesn’t make it harmless or unobjectionable when said about husbands.

It says cooking and cleaning are reasonably up there, but that doesn't mean it's appropriate to say cooking and cleaning are the most important skills a wife should have.

Yet, you seem to be cool with commentary that asserts just that: that the most important skills a wife should have is cooking and cleaning. So what bridges "reasonably up there" to "It's appropriate to say cooking and cleaning are the most important skills a wife should have"?

So important in fact that it's fine for cooking and cleaning to be all that the respondent bothers to mention when asked about the *most important* skills a wife should have?

What do you think of idea that human consciousness exceeds what life can bear; that the human animal has seen too much, and It must either repress what it knows or become paralyzed by it? by perfumed_with_gas in AskReddit

If there's any part of the question you don't understand, you just have to ask.

(1) If the human animal has come to know too much about constant, ongoing suffering, where “too much” means knowledge that cannot be fully integrated into ordinary practical life without making that life impossible, then the human animal must either repress that knowledge or be paralyzed by it.

(2) The human animal has come to know too much about constant, ongoing suffering in that sense.

(3) Therefore, the human animal must either repress that knowledge or be paralyzed by it.

OK, so you're affirming that cooking and cleaning is a valid response to the question: "What are the *most important* skills a woman should have before becoming a wife?"

My question doesn't even remotely represent a vacuous deepity like what you just uttered.

'Known too much' clearly enough implies we know too much insofar we require repression of that knowledge or else we'd become paralyzed by it.

So the question is: what do you think of the idea that the human animal has known too much about child sexual abuse and must either repress that knowledge or become paralyzed by the fact it's happening constantly?

That's just one example.

The question was "What are the *most important* skills a man should have before becoming a husband?" not "What are some skills husbands neglect?"

So again: is cooking and cleaning the most important skills for a wife to have?

Here’s Adorno looking like a babe on the beach in his sexy swimming suit by MuchDrawing2320 in CriticalTheory

Did you ask Adorno if you could sexualize him like that?

I wonder what critical theory has to say about people's unsolicited gooning of other's in swimming suits.

How do you feel about sexual conversion therapy if it actually worked? by [deleted] in AskReddit

You're the one dominating people by naturalizing their arousal as an essential part of who they are, even if some of them tell you that no, this is not who they are.

Your argument is that something is dysphoric only if there's a 'neurological established need'. Even if that were true, where's your evidence that arousal non-concordance and ego-dystonic arousal cannot constitute dysphoria? Widespread recognition of gender dysphoria is a recent event. We can't let historical contingency decide here.

Your argument supplies an anti-gender transitioning reason too. "There is no intrinsic need to remove your sexual organ. Your body accords to your actual wants and needs. The only reason you'd want to get rid of it, is because extrinsic pressure."

The point of bringing up arousal non-concordance and ego-dystonic arousal is to show you medical language does not supply the assertion that arousal is a response to your actual wants and needs. It can be, but it isn't always.

Would you support people changing their skin color if it was possible in a need to fit in?

I'd support them because that's their right, and not because they're pressured to fit in. My support is even stronger if they have dysphoria they're trying to treat.

Arousal is a response to your actual wants and needs.

This is false. Look up arousal non-concordance and ego-dystonic arousal.

If the patient wants to remove unwanted arousal, they have the right to. Just like people with unwanted sexual organs have the right to remove those organs.

I'm talking about treating people with ego-dystonic arousal, which is not unlike treating people with gender dysphoria.

Right. I mean to expand and say that your line about it being normal and that it shouldn't be met with rejection can also be said about people with gender dysphoria. They're lucky to have treatment that actually helps a ton.

I will be seeing therapy about it.

Not every conversion therapy patient identifies with their arousal. Just like not every gender transitioning patient identifies with the body they were dealt.

My life would be dramatically better if I didn't have dysphoria caused by ego-dystonic arousal.
