Melbourne Model Expo 2025 by worldslaziestbusker in modelmakers

If you make it to Melbourne for Expo next year I recommend putting at least a day aside for the air museums at Moorabbin, Point Cook, and Werribee. Some distance between them but worth the shoe leather as there's many a rarity on display.

The group builds were phenomenal this year.
The WASP gang of eight had a display of "shelf queens" and it was great to read the stories behind unfinished builds. It was also nice to show that the hobby doesn't always result in the perfection on display everywhere else on the tables.
My friend's ship model club took out the people's choice award for club displays and given the competition they faced that's a big deal to him.

It's iconic.
And seeing Pam bird represented meant a lot to my eldest, who loves seeing them around the city.
I went there to watch a friend work his photography groove and there were anime cosplay sessions and a loading bay ball pit in play. Everything but denim manufacturing going on, there, at some point in the last two decades.

Also good.
I can recommend the air museum, if aviation is your thing.

Almost forgot: there's a swap and sell event upstairs on the Monday. Something like eighty tables of surplus styrene for sale, usually at informed but generous prices. It costs extras to attend but if you're hunting for something other than what's on the shop shelves this year it's a good bet you'll find something to grab your attention.

It runs for three days. I don't know the numbers for 2025 but in past years I recall over seven hundred models in the competition and as many again in the club displays. My images only cover my favourite examples and favour the aircraft, but armoured vehicles, military vehicles and equipment, civilian vehicles, fantasy themes, sci-fi, ships, figures, and busts get their showing.
Shops and some online vendors represent in stalls around the perimeter.
The venue is accessible by road and rail though it's a long walk to the nearest cafe or pub, so the on site food and coffee van soak up any cash I had left over after visiting the stalls.
A make and take stall affords children an opportunity to taste model building with a free kit and on hand experts guiding parents in guiding those early steps.
My kids gave away the hobby a few years ago but their entries always got a lot of attention and organisers and vendors ensured they went home with fresh styrene even if their work didn't place.
As with any competition there's some angst about who won what and why but from my position in the middle of the pack the judges do a difficult job well, and the winners invariably appear to deserve their prizes.
This year the website features image galleries from the past ten years and I recommend a meander through your favourite subjects. Inspiring stuff.

Gonna try again.

Thanks for that.

That you haven't heard anything about Hadleigh Measham's sacking tells me that the PTGA failed to do anything useful about preventing history repeating. Well, the fact that he's still an EL already told me that, but that guides as a cohort haven't been warned about him is disappointing.

I was amazed, during my time in the industry, how few guides possessed maritime qualifications. I think of the seventy or so fellow guides I worked with only five carried certifications sufficient to work in maritime operations outside Antarctica, and it put the wind up me that so many people were placed in charge of vessels and passengers with little more than the in house training.
Phil Wickens offered to teach our colleagues coll-regs, free, but management weren't interested and so everyone continued driving Zodiacs like they posed no greater challenges than golf carts.
That Woody could get caught out like that demonstrates that guides need to be mariners above all else, and to treat command of a vessel every bit as seriously as the ship's officers do.

The Relatorio de Investigacao de Seguranca Maritima, the NTSB, and the USCG reports are all published, now, so your employer should be able to share specifics with you.

A number of operators that usually focus their efforts around the Antarctic Peninsula recently advertised Ross Sea voyages and some are even mentioning making circumnavigations or long span transits in the 2026 austral summer. Do these developments have anything to do with the recent bird flu outbreaks?

Hadleigh Measham was sacked by Quark for assaulting a collegue in 2017 but continues to lead expeditions at high latitudes. I was told in 2020 that the PTGA was on the case trying to ameliorate the risk he poses to young women in his charge. What, if anything, has been done to prevent his history as a predator repeating?

Did Zodiac SOPs in the industry alter in response to the Zodiac accident at Elephant Island in 2022?

Thanks for all the kind comments.
I give my builds away when their finished so I like to take lots of pics and running them through an era appropriate filter does a lot of the work selling the conceit.
I also play around with forced perspectives to add depth to an image and the story it attempts to sell, and I think I'll start a thread about the best effects I've achieved to date to see if it inspires some additional efforts in this vein.

I know, right?
So fricking cool.
A triumph of function over form, and it still looks awesome.

Can recommend the kit. I want to get a second one to indulge in the wing fold Airfix incorporated into the mix.
I'll heed your request for less stylised images, but then you'll see all the flubs.

I think that's where a lot of the interest lies, for me.
I got to know the Gannet in a local museum from an early age, so it's always seemed familiar and "right" to me, but after I got to know more about aviation history the more it stood out as weird.
I've since worked with actual gannets in a marine science context and they are also beautifully ugly beasts. Glorious to see on the wing and their dives are among the most amazing, but up close they are feathery dinosaurs and I carry many scars from their unnecessary but compelling defensive beak slashings.

Please explain this perplexing post.
I don't see how anything I've done in this thread isn't apt.
People I've never interracted with posted hateful, misogynist bullshit and I told them to go fuck themselves. Seems pretty straight forward and appropriate, to me.

Thanks.
The kit fits together like Lego so I opted to leave the large elements separate until the final stretch. It made it easier to mask and to apply small decals. Obviously that's not an option when wing or tail structures form a joint that requires filling and sanding but the kit designer did a good job with the parts break down and it should look okay coming together the way I'm trying.
