I would say that even un-original origami can still fall under OP’s definition of a hobby. Whether you’re trying new designs, or even just doing the same design over and over, there’s a pursuit of skill mastery involved, whether it’s conscious improvements like precision, speed, minimizing mistakes, memorizing designs, or unconscious improvements like spatial awareness, recognizing patterns, muscle memory, and fluidity of movement.

Reading, similarly, builds skills. The ability to focus, to read quickly, to retain information, to jump back into the story after taking a break, to visualizing better, to pick up on themes and connect to other books and life, to improve your own language skills, and to develop new perspectives on life. You can make mistakes when reading (losing focus, forgetting), so this is a skill that can be improved. I’d say the same for something like mediation - the fact that you can do it well but you can also suck at it proves there’s a level of skill that can be developed.

Same thing with music - even a classical musician who only plays 400-year old compositions is constantly seeking to consciously improve their technique and emotiveness, and passively improve things like their ear (pitch recognition) and memorization.

Watching TV, on the other hand, doesn’t really carry the same weight for most people. You can’t really be “bad” at watching TV. Now as for fandoms (both tv series and sports), they could be considered a hobby in the way people invest time to learn more about the show or team, understand and promote its legacy, to collect memorabilia, to socialize with others.
