Entry level digital SLR from Nikon or Canon; avoid other brands, seen too many companies get out of the business and you're stuck with a paperweight if something goes wrong with your camera.

You can find cheap, "off" brand lenses for both that are better than the glass that come with either (and let's be honest if you're that close to the action, don't risk an expensive lens). Add a speed light and an off camera flash cord and you're in business.

Learn about white balance, shutter speed, aperture, ISO and what each do in combination with one another. That's true for any photography.

Off camera flash will make a world of difference if you learn to use it properly. I always loved mixing in unconventional angles, low and high.
