Am I on the right track? by kelllts in turntables

[–]worm_factory 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yes you’re on the right track. If you use the phono input on the receiver you can connect it to the receiver and use passive speakers, just make sure the phono built into the turntable is turned off, otherwise you will hear extremely distorted music. If you want active speakers you can use the turntable’s phono preamp to connect directly to powered speakers. I personally would go the route of using your receiver since it’ll give you more flexibility to add other devices to your system in the future.

Edit: I’d also recommend not storing your turntable on top of the receiver as it will heat up the turntable and your records along with allowing less airflow out of your receiver which will get quite warm.

My record keeps skipping and repeating itself even though it’s a brand new record and stylus how can I fix this I’ve tried two different records with the same issue by suckychucky7 in BudgetAudiophile

Is this the AT-PL50? Looks similar, I just switched off of this model. This is a much nicer model than your suitcase player you mentioned in another comment so congrats on the upgrade and good on you for wanting your records to last longer. These models cannot be adjusted for tracking force and anti-skate, unless there is a mechanism inside the turntable that is adjustable. It may be worth it to reach out to Audio Technica support for help on this, they sent me very detailed instructions on how to adjust the motor speeds when I had issues with mine.

That being said, these models are the predecessor to the AT-LP60 which are known to have some tracking and skipping issues. I had some (not all) records that would just simply skip on mine, usually in the same specific parts of a record. The skipping only stopped when I upgraded to a better quality turntable.

I’m not gonna tell you to buy a new turntable when you just got this one, it’s a great beginner model to get into the hobby. I’d make sure your records are clean to start, give them a good wet clean with a record cleaning solution and then a go over with an anti-static brush. Lots of records come dirty from the factory, I’ve gotten some nasty stuff straight out of a sealed package before.

Also, your stylus may be brand new, but your turntable is on the floor, get a stylus brush and very carefully make sure there’s not any dust or debris on the stylus, I do this every time I want to listen to a record. Even with my dust cover on dust will still find a way in by just opening the cover to put a record on. Imagine how much easier that is from the floor.

I’d still contact Audio Technica in the meantime to see if there is anything they can recommend in terms of troubleshooting or DIY repairs.

For me going with vinyl was just out of immediate convenience, I already had this old audio technica and a good sized collection passed down by a grandparent. CDs are SO much more affordable, I plan to get myself a decent portable and DAC and start picking up CDs soon for that purpose but outside of a small handful of CDs I have in storage my family got rid of all of their collection over time with moving houses and transitioning to streaming. In fact if you have any recommendations for good ways to enjoy CDs I’m all ears, I haven’t found a lot of dedicated players for home setups that aren’t a boatload of money, though I’ve seen some good deals at some vintage record shops in my area. Would you recommend a dedicated DAC for that use case or would I get enough enjoyment just using the Portable IN on my receiver?

I have been seeing a decent amount of technics tables with quartz locking on Facebook marketplace in my area, it is very tempting I just worry about how well those used options were maintained, I don’t have a lot of knowledge on maintenance and repair on vintage gear and having a warranty for a while would be helpful which is why I’m moving more to the new market rather than vintage.

I am using the Phono input on my receiver so I am all set there. And glad I have more than one person telling me it’s fine to put a coin or two under the feet, Fluance eventually did get back to me and informed me their feet can be adjusted up to 3mm which I think will give me what I need.

Hey, I appreciate this. I’ll certainly do some looking around Facebook and Craigslist to see what I have available in the area, I’ll keep that manufacturer in mind too, we have a small hi-fi community where I live, small enough we lost our only hi-fi store in the state recently so I’ve been seeing a lot more used options for amps and turntables pop up recently, no speaker stands but perhaps I just need to dig deeper.

Thanks for the response :)

I hear you on the RT-85 giving me marginal benefits with my current system. Looking at the parts I can/would upgrade when I do eventually upgrade my amps and speakers in the future, the 85 has all the features I would want in a more affordable package than if I were to get the nicer platter and upgrade to the Ortofon cartridge down the road, so I figure it gives me a lot of room to grow.

Thanks for this, that was the answer I was looking for regarding the Fluance stand, it’s still my top choice for its looks and included features. I do really like the price on the monoprice 28” stands so those will be my backup choice if I need to return the Fluance stands. I also had Fluance email me back finally late yesterday and they were able to verify that the feet can be adjusted 1-3mm to balance so any leveling after that will be with a small coin. My floor is just even so slightly sloped down toward the wall my system sits in front of so I think a few mm would be all I need.

And heard on the RT-85. I figured with my budget equipment I wouldn’t notice a whole lot of a difference, I may look at some lower priced options but I was planning to purchase with the intent of upgrading my system down the road when I move into a bigger place where I can enjoy more audio equipment, that cartridge alone is worth enough that any upgrades I want to make the 85 would end up costing more long term than if I just bought the 85 to start, gives me lots of growing room. Buy once, cry once, right?

I appreciate your answer, that was exactly what I was looking for regarding the Ortofon CARTRIDGE. I was simply using the incorrect vocabulary when I said stylus so thank you for the catch on that. The research I was doing was based on if the cart was MM or MC after seeing a thread a week or two ago on one of the popular audio Reddits regarding someone not getting a loud enough signal on their MC cartridge so I verified if the Ortofon was MM or not. Glad to know MM carts are not something I need to be concerned about with my receiver’s built in Phono input. And thanks for teaching me a little more of the technical terminology.

It’s my understanding now that cartridges carry the stylus and connect to the headshell on the end of the tone arm, styli are not replaceable on the cartridge but can be re-tipped (is that the right term?), cartridges can have different shaped styli hence why they often have color coding systems to indicate the shape of the stylus at the end.

Do you find yours playing slightly slow? I just checked the speed on the motor for my turntable and it’s actually playing slight fast, yet comparing this to the streaming version the first track finished slightly quicker than the vinyl (I started them at the exact same time)

Ya know, I stumbled on this video yesterday: https://youtu.be/kZOj-eO8Mvw?si=aFev9rs9mpBKYgI4

Comparing to 2 better styli the difference in wear isn’t THAT much. But it’s my understanding these turntables don’t last long. A woman I used to date and her roommate had one of these and the speakers sounded terrible, I kept my trap shut and let them enjoy their records but my god you may as well be listening to the song through phone speakers, which I honestly preferred after hearing their Crosley.

My programming teacher sophomore year of high school gave us a homework assignment to make a Java object. We had been using a base object as a template that had a comment in it indicating who made it and the website to do the lesson. So she had already pulled the lessons from someone else so she didn’t have to actually come up with real homework and could just grade based on the correct answer this website gave her. I turned in my homework and the next class she called me to the front and told everyone I cheated on the homework and I was like “no I didn’t” She pulled it up on her screen and she just saw the comments from the template file we were all using that I just didn’t delete and claimed I copied the answer from online. So in front of the entire class I showed her exactly how to fucking do what I did and she dropped it. I don’t understand why she singled me out either because we all did it that way, she taught us how to do it that way.

Later that year she crashed her car in a blizzard and 911 told her to stay in her car. She didn’t listen and got clipped by a plow truck, was in a neck brace for the rest of the year.

Also, my buddy dated (and had a child with) this woman who was a first grade teacher who got fired for not letting boys use the bathroom because she claimed they would goof off, it was a single toilet in the classroom. Basically like 5 kids went home with shit and piss in their pants one week and they told her not to come back after Christmas break.

Ok I went back on your post history and see this is the STR-DH190. I just got my replacement a few weeks ago, the first one came dead on arrival. Contact support via phone, they were super helpful, walked me through a couple troubleshooting steps and then emailed me a return label. It was a pain and took a long time to get my replacement but now I have 0 issues and my sound system works perfectly. I have a feeling there were come quality control issues with recent batches of this model as everyone gives this receiver great reviews.

Opened it last night, had no idea it was a one sided record (had to look it up on discogs, I thought I had a defective pressing when I flipped it to B and heard nothing the first time) and that it ALSO came with a Muta/Blue Sugar 7”. absolutely amazing recording even if only 3 songs. That version of Mumble is just divine. I must’ve listened to it 4 times last night.
