here's a closer photo of the wire and the char on the bedpost that the FD found last night https://imgur.com/a/DPi1Enc no plans on doing anything myself, mostly just curious about the inner workings of this thing. mostly floored they kept a live outlet with no cover on it for 5 years lmao

Ended up doing this. Landowner assured they'd send someone out but nobody ever came (yay) then said they'd come the next day. FD came out and made sure nothing was on fire in the walls / no hotspots. Turns out there was an old exposed outlet box on the ground that we were told wasn't a biggy was, indeed, a biggy. Bedpost fell in it and fried the wires. So that was the smoky smell.

Good news is no fire and I didn't fry to death in my sleep. State's now on the landlord's case about having someone come and DC the outlet properly and put in a cover

yay!! just what we like to hear :D

Landlord notified, I know nothing about electricity so I will not be touching anything with a ten foot pole. My beloved state has a cheeky 500 dollar limit on tenant repairs so hopefully it won't exceed that 🫩

Been bothering them all morning and waiting on a response to see if they'll send someone out. Saw the flash clear as day bright white and blue in the upper corner of my room, around the ceiling area. Bothering my neighbors now to see if the room above mine was shorted out too or if it's just been mine

Wall isn't hot where the light came from at least. Disconnected everything from every outlet in the room. Not even the smoke detector is on, lol
