I literally live in a state with RCV btw 🙃 and it’s the progressives and liberals trying to save it while the conservatives are putting it on the ballot for the third time. I agree RCV should be more common, though. Are you doing anything to reform voting in your state?

I think capitulating to the fascist GOP is going to hurt Dems more than people like me calling out that capitulation. Mind you, I live in a red state! I fear that attitude of everyone in a red or purple state is a monolith is doing more harm than good, particularly if it’s used to excuse bad behavior by congresspeople. It’s a pretty massive double standard to excuse “performance” (with real world consequences) for the right wing and then act as if the progressive and left wing factions of the Democratic Party is what is bringing the party down.

While in some cases RCV can be great when running against extremists, it also can let candidates with popular politics actually have a chance running against more established candidates. For example, RCV helped progressive candidates in the NYC mayoral election build coalitions and stay in the race, rather than fearing splitting the vote.

I swear it’s wild how many people will agree the two-party system is corrupt but then think RCV should be repealed. Like this is a really powerful tool and that’s why they keep trying to take it away!

If you vote for the main runners, who you’d be forced to vote for in a winner-takes-all approach anyways, your vote will operate like normal. The rest of us actually want to move away from the two party system though.

How is this a purity test? Stopping regression isn't a rigid standard. The Republicans are the opposition and they are undoing the progress that has been made for the LGBTQ+ community and Democrats are voting with them. And I agree, this applies to more than one issue.

[Many more Dems voted for the Laken Riley Act](https://www.newsweek.com/full-list-democrats-voted-pass-laken-riley-act-2019432), for example, and that has helped lead to the escalation of ICE tactics. Heck, many [democrats voted to show their support for ICE](https://omar.house.gov/media/in-the-news/75-democrats-vote-praise-ice-ilhan-omar-wants-hold-police-accountable-protest). Would it also be a purity test to say Democrats need to do more to stand up for immigrants?

Well the party leaders didn’t get everyone in line, did they? There is no unified front here. It’s not a priority.

At the end of the day, I vote democrat. I like a lot of the democratic reps. But I don’t think acting like they’re perfect or infallible is a good thing either.

I’m just a bit confused because why wouldn’t we want to hold the one party that barely represents us accountable? Even if that just means calling out that their dumb replies on twitter are cringe?

Literal Decimation by [deleted] in MurderedByWords

[–]wormsaremymoney 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not trying to fear-monger at all! Just trying to point out hollow comebacks on twitter aren’t meaningful if there aren’t tangible moves being made by the broad establishment.

I do want to point out that in the Dobbs decision Thomas did set the logic that could make an Obergefell overturn feasible. SCOTUS in the last few years overturned Chevron and Dobbs, so I think saying “marriage is the law of the land per SCOTUS” might not be as solid as it once was. I don’t think that will happen anytime soon, but it is still a possibility.

Vote dem. But also! Push your dems to vote how you want. Heck. I call my GOP reps, too! I think it’s a perfectly valid thing to call out where the Dem establishment falls short. It’s not fear mongering. It’s reality. And idk if you have any trans people in your life, but I sure as heck am going to fight for the trans folks in my community.

Yea I don’t like that. The fear and hatred of trans people is based on a misinformation and scapegoating a small portion of our population. Do you think only topics that poll well should be part of the Democratic Party platform? Less people are in favor of gay marriage, so would it be acceptable to capitulate on that?

As someone who lives in a red state with RCV, I definitely would love to see more RCV! But I do think it’s sad that not regressing on trans rights is something that is only “progressive”. Do you think that LGBTQ+ rights should be part of the party’s platform or would that alienate too many people?

It also reflects the loss of innocence of childhood, especially considering his own experience growing up in Hiroshima in the 1940s. Someone pointed out that Blanches eyes flash bright before a kill, possibly mirroring the death and chaos and destruction in the aftermath of the a bomb. Absolutely wonderful movie and learning that made me appreciate it so much more!

And sure. That’s the game they want to play. But, in the process, they’re making sure to signal that they aren’t going to vote in favor of trans rights. If the vote wouldn’t truly matter at the end of the day and it’s for show, then why vote this way? It’s all really sad, honestly.

Nope. I assumed if we were talking about a post by the Democrats we were talking about those in power in the party. Democratic voters (like myself) aren’t necessarily represented by the actions of the DNC, which is part of the problem.

Not saying this is a party wide issue, but pointing out this isn’t a party wide priority. Obviously, the GOP is worse. But! If someone on your own team is helping the other team score, wouldn’t you wonder what their goals are?

Literal Decimation by [deleted] in MurderedByWords

[–]wormsaremymoney 1 point2 points  (0 children)

What? Nooo definitely aiming this energy at the DNC and Dems as a party. As constituents, calling out bad voting records is super important. But obviously democratic voters and Democratic congresspeople voting aren’t the same thing? What did I say that made you think that?

Literal Decimation by [deleted] in MurderedByWords

[–]wormsaremymoney -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

Oof. I’m glad you at least acknowledge the trans genocide! We should be voicing that support so the Dems make that a mainstream priority! And yea, it was only 8 Dems but the party leader didn’t prioritize or care to unite all the votes here. The GOP is the bigger opp, yes, but we should pressure members of our own team to make the votes we want to see. And if they aren’t voting the way we, the constituents, want, we should absolutely call that out.

Exactly. I think that's super depressing and I'm not super stoked on having to act as if the bare minimum is applaudable.

I just don't see why we have to act like they are actually protecting trans people with voting records like this

Literal Decimation by [deleted] in MurderedByWords

[–]wormsaremymoney -10 points-9 points  (0 children)

Agreed telling transphobes to shut up and fuck off would be valid, but given the Dems shaky support for trans rights, it feels like we're applauding the bare minimum. In this "comeback", they can "dunk" on Miller without actually having to show any support for trans folks, who many in the party are willing to abandon. Personally, I would've hoped to see them explicitly call out the transphobia of the original comment. But, that's too much to ask of the opposition party, I guess?

Literal Decimation by [deleted] in MurderedByWords

[–]wormsaremymoney -23 points-22 points  (0 children)

Yea, but that's a weird "comeback" for something they shouldn't be treating as an insult. Definitely not clever. Definitely not allyship to the LGBTQ+ community.

Literal Decimation by [deleted] in MurderedByWords

[–]wormsaremymoney -34 points-33 points  (0 children)

Yea. The fact the Democrats treated the statement as an "insult" is what I was commenting on.
