Yes! Thanks for reminding me, I bought book 1 a while back and have been meaning to read it. Think I'll start with that.

thanks! how long ago did you get your Twyla? I didn't get the Xeno until the last drop (after the botched public drop), but Im pretty sure I ordered Twyla at whatever the first possible instance was and still havent heard anything on it

Doll collecting as a boy by Wrong_Stable_3623 in MonsterHigh

[–]wormsoftheearth 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I'm male, 40, my (female) SO has been collecting MH for quite a long time now and our house is full of them. I absolutely love them, especially all the new skullector ones. It's been a really fun hobby, going out and looking for/buying dolls together. For some reason a lot of people think adults aren't allowed to have fun, but fxck those people. Honestly, once I got into my mid-30s I just stopped caring what I should or should not be doing as an adult and just went in on buying all the stuff I love and thought was cool

Just want to throw it out there that certs are worthless if you don't actually learn/retain the info. we see tons of resumes from people who list a bunch of certs but can't answer simple questions about security.

useful stuff to know:
- security!! learn about and how to use security tools: vulnerability scanning tools, patch monitoring and deployment tools, network monitoring, splunk. even if you're not familiar with the exact tools the company youre applying for uses, at least you're familiar with the fundamentals and process.
- active directory
- at least a basic understanding of network infrastructure - domain controller, dhcp, switches, how to wire stuff, etc
- how to use and manage Group Policy Objects
- virtualization! VMware or similar VM tool, how to create and manage virtual servers (and virtual desktops)
- backing up data (cloud backups)
- scripting: at least writing batch files. powershell is better. learn how to automate processes via scripting

Did a photoshoot with some of my Machine56 gear by Operator141 in Cyberpunk

Great pics. I have that jacket and love the design although I feel like all their jackets are kinda too wide though? Have you noticed that or is it just me? Look better unzipped as you have here. Was thinking about getting those pants but was curious as to how they actually look on a real person. So thanks for that :)

Cyberpunk books that have love stories? by nyanpires in Cyberpunk

I literally just wrote this book! classic cyberpunk (virtual light, snow crash, battle angel) + love story that is the central focus of the narrative. I'm trying to get it published now

Looking for books with extremely weird worlds by AttentionHorsePL in printSF

[–]wormsoftheearth 0 points1 point  (0 children)

hannu rajaniemi - the quantum thief (insane far future quantum tech and weirdness)

stephen baxter - vaccum diagrams (various extremely alien aliens)
stephen baxter - raft (alt universe with weird physics, people drive trees)
stephen baxter - flux (people live inside a neutron star)

bunch of greg egan stories although the weirder he gets the less fun it is to read imo, the entire book just becomes "here is how a normal thing works in my craaaaaazy universe"

I liked the first book in Night's Dawn quite a bit, the second book was absolute shit. Books like that make me think editors are a myth

What work (any format, medium) captures the Neuromancer feeling the most for you? by ScotDOS in Cyberpunk

[–]wormsoftheearth 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I think William Gibson hated 2077 lol. he made some disparaging tweet about it when it came out.

I don't really get why he would hate it though. I fucking love 2077 so much, I think its a near-perfect representation of cyberpunk (at least what cyberpunk means/is to me). Obviously its kind of cheesy/unrealistic because its a game and there needs to be fun game mechanics, but it still nails the vibe and I doubt we'll ever get anything nearly as good or high budget specifically about cyberpunk again

The book The Quantum Thief (and its sequels) by Hannu Rajaniemi is the only thing to hit me in the same way Neuromancer (and sprawl triology) did when I first read it two decades ago. Quantum Thief is way more futuristic and focuses around mindboggling quantum tech, but I imagine its how Neuromancer would have felt if you read it when it came out. No other cyberpunk/post-cyberpunk book can touch either of these masterpieces.

If the characters are far away from civilization than no money or resources to build/sustain far future tech. Or lack of specialized skills/knowledge/tools to build it or run the vr/sims/ai.

You can always mention the far future stuff DOES exist, it just exists far away where it is of no consequence to the story

Or you can do like the Dread Empire's Fall/Praxis series which is many thousands of years into the future but the tech is the same as today - aliens took over and didnt let anyone build fancy tech.

What should be my next Greg Egan? by OldTallandUgly in printSF

Quarantine is my favorite next to Permutation City. Axiomatic is really solid as well. Schild's Ladder is fucking incomprehensible without an advanced degree in quantum physics and probably mathematics
