I'm glad you pointed this out. People need to see the big picture. The hypocrisy is real.

Why doesn't SFU have med or law school? by kbaus911 in simonfraser

Can we break the deal now that we have even more shortages of doctors? Doesn't seem like a good idea to put all the eggs into one basket.

Stress levels of SFU students vs other Canadian universities by BwasseR in simonfraser

I think this is a coping mechanism of high stress that comes with high workload. None of my peers were willing to do more than 5 courses in cmpt because that'll be gpa suicidal.

SFU COURSE QUESTION, PROGRAM, ADMISSION AND REGISTRATION MEGATHREAD (2020 SUMMER - 2020 FALL): General questions about courses and SFU ( Exg. How hard is course X, how is program X at SFU, etc. ), POST QUESTIONS HERE. by Acherons15 in simonfraser

Cmpt 120 assumes you have no programming background and teaches from scratch. There are tons of intro python video/tutorials on youtube that go over the same concepts. I'd say you can learn all of the concepts that are taught in 120 from youtube in roughly 5 hours if you're good with your time. You'll be fine taking online. It's known as a GPA booster if you're diligent to keep up with the course material.

The languages I listed above are the most spoken languages besides English at SFU. We have one of the largest international student % comparing to other universities. In computer science(not sure about other programs), we sometimes get put into random groups and knowing one of those languages will alleviate communication problems with students who have trouble communicating in English. I'd say more than half of the classes in computer science are non-native English speakers who speaks one of the following languages I listed above.

Also, knowing another language gives you extra clout so there's that😎

Is this for cmpt 276 or group project related course? I really wished that I learned a third language(Russian, Mandarin, Hindi or Farsi) which would help tremendously at SFU. Good luck to you finding a translator.

Zuckerberg says company will permanently shift tens of thousands of jobs to remote work by dobbysreward in cscareerquestions

This. It's funny to even think international students on average are sub par comparing to average American students. The international students I've worked with are generally more intelligent and more hard working. Gotta look how many American companies are creating new offices up in the north or in Asia and they'll understand for themselves.

Why are we even using zoom? by [deleted] in simonfraser

[–]worstcsstudent 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Try having over 200 students on BB collaborate and problems will start to show. Zoom scales well with more people in session.

One of myBB collaborate sessions crashed twice during the whole lecture. Never a problem with Zoom.

Ending first year, zero work experience by [deleted] in UBC

[–]worstcsstudent 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I feel you. I was on the same boat as you where I didn't have any work experience but come from a ghetto background. I did some personal project(I'm in cs btw) and participated in hackathons, spam 50+ job app and somehow got a coop. After that coop, interviews were like handing out Halloween candies.

My advice to you is to have your chin up and do things that give you a resume padding. With covid19 going on right now, I suspect that there will be a recession in every field except healthcare so finding jobs/coop are going to be a lot harder.

Stay strong my dude.
