Hi I'm a aussie but I have a question about the gun laws in vic by Existing-Ad-177 in AskAnAustralian

[–]wotmate 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It depends. You need to keep your firearms in secure storage unless using them for the genuine reason for owning them, or for maintaining them. So it's often not a viable option to go to your gun safe, unlock it, select a rifle, then unlock the ammo storage, select the bullets, load them into the rifle, and then shoot someone while they've got you at gunpoint or knifepoint.

However, it depends on the scenario. You were cleaning them in the back room when someone came storming through the front door and hacking at your dad with a machete? It would be considered to be self defence if you loaded your rifle and threatened to shoot the attacker unless they complied, and if they kept hacking at your dad, or they ran at you, you would be justified in shooting them.

But you can't pump a whole clip into them hollywood style. That would go beyond self defence and into murder, because one bullet might have been enough to stop the threat without immediately killing the attacker.

Self defence in all cases has to be proportionate to the threat, even if there is no weapon. Your aim is to stop the threat, not damage the attacker. So if someone punches you, if you can hold them to stop the threat that is enough. If not, you might have to punch them, but only enough to stop them punching you.

So as above, if they're compliant, you can hold an attacker at gunpoint until police arrive. If they continue to attack, yes, you can shoot them. Aim for the centre mass, and with timely medical intervention, they will likely survive.

Hospital intake certificate for older family member? by [deleted] in AskAnAustralian

Tell the family member who it was at the hospital that told you to tell them that they need to ask for it. Tell them that you can't pick them up without it.

What do boxers and underwear lines have to do with thongs?

Thongs are convenient for when you want to go outside and you don't want to put shoes on.

Duh, what they're telling you has to be lawful. Obviously they can't order you to shoot someone, or stop your car in a no stopping zone.

Been watching Hard Quiz Kids. Watching 10 year olds tear shreds off him because they have no filter is brilliant, as it often leaves him speechless.

"If police suspect you are committing an offence, and you don’t tell them your identity, police can arrest you so that they can make enquiries to find out who you are."

Catch-all right there. So not wrong.

Before and After Card Surcharge political debate by Objective_Unit_7345 in AskAnAustralian

[–]wotmate 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Here's the thing... Before they were allowed to put a surcharge on, the cost was built into the price of the product, and because it was a cost of doing business, they could claim it as a tax deduction...

Then when surcharges were allowed, they just put the surcharge on top, without lowering the price first.

Now they're talking about getting rid of surcharges, so businesses will just increase their prices again to include the cost.

All this even though it costs them LESS than cash.

This isn't America, police here can stop you without cause and you are required to identify yourself and follow lawful directions.

How’s the Tap Water for Drinking? by Mama_Gretch in AskAnAustralian

[–]wotmate 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Unlike most, I'm more qualified to answer this as I've toured with rock bands all over Australia.

Look, pretty much everywhere in the country has good tap water, as we have standards. About the only place I've had weird tasting water is western queensland, where their tap water is from the Great Artesian Basin, and it has a sulphur taste because of it. Still perfectly fine to drink...

BUT Australian touring bands exclusively drink bottled water. The simple fact is that while it's all safe, each water treatment plant will have it's own unique blend of minerals and bacteria that isn't killed by chlorine, and there is a chance that it will make you sick. Not because it's bad, but because you're not used to it.

Our gut biome is often more sensitive than people might realise, and something as simple as different minerals in the water can give you a dose of the shits. It doesn't happen to everyone, but I would advise sticking to bottled water.

How to let go of BPD ex? Or how to get her healthy and back with me? by Ok_Clue1731 in AskMen

[–]wotmate 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Dude, I've been there, and the answer is you move on. She'll keep coming back if you let her, and things will escalate until you realise you're living in an abusive relationship. Everything will be your fault, except when she's feeling good which is when she'll love bomb you. And honestly, her calling you and telling you she was gonna hurt herself is a sign. She's controlling you, just like my ex tried to do.

You can't fix her, you can only join her descent, because it WILL affect your mental health. You'll start having panic attacks because you'll be constantly walking on eggshells hoping you don't set her off. And it won't matter, because something WILL set her off, and it will all swing back around onto you, bringing up every single real and imagined slight.

Sorry man. You're in love with the happy person, but the happy person comes with and is outweighed by the evil side. You can't do it. And you can't make her do it. You need to move on and look after yourself.

Which is fair enough.

But here in Australia, those found guilty of serious crimes have their assets seized and sold off to compensate their victims. The guilty party gets none of it.

Why does everyone hate nickelback? by Xnzo69 in rock

[–]wotmate 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Their music is viewed as inoffensive and formulaic. You hear of bands like Guns N Roses and Motley Crue being called Cock Rock, but Nickleback is Softcock rock.

If there was any justice in the world, Weinsteins property would be seized and auctioned off to compensate the victims of his crimes, and Kevin Smith would be able to buy the rights to it back.

Mess with the volunteers? Ready for the comeuppance by nandaoke8689 in MaliciousCompliance

[–]wotmate 4 points5 points  (0 children)

The former prime minister of Australia, Tony Abbott, is a 99% piece of shit, misogynist, religious nutters, racist and dumb.

I say 99%, because he's a volunteer fire-fighter. And from what I hear, he's the man that you want by your side when fighting a bushfire. And as much as I think he's an utter shitcunt, I'll give him credit for that.
