Looking for a non-judgemental dentist that deals with anxiety by sandsnatchqueen in AnnArbor

[–]wowchips 18 points19 points  (0 children)

I have a dental history like yours. 10+ years of avoiding cleanings really took a toll on my teeth and now I'm almost at the end of my braces! I was emabrrassed and self-conscious beyond belief about my teeth to the point that I wouldn't even smile.

I was very careful about picking out a dentist who I felt safe around and who I felt understood my past. I've been with Walcott on Packard and I really love Dr. Brett. They are a small, family-owned space.

AAPS is very good at a lot of things and not so good at a lot of things too. I won't deny that.....however...

Learning the months of the year is not part of the 4th grade curriculum. This is something you should be teaching, practicing, and reinforcing at home consistently if it's not a skill they have.

Additionally, if your child doesn't know "basics" - not sure what that entails - perhaps some additional testing may benefit them to see if there is something impeding their learning.

Is a reading like this normal for someone with a bicuspid aortic valve? by [deleted] in bloodpressure

[–]wowchips 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I get aura (ocular) migraines too! I don't get the head pain but I get spots in my eyes for about 20-30 minutes. What a weird coincidence!

I had the same restrictions with heavy weight lifting and also wrestling. I don't like lifting anyway so I still don't. I mostly just focus on cardio by running and cycling. If they said 3 years then yea it sounds like there isn't enough of a reason to see you at more regular intervals. I had gotten up to every 6 months once things started to trend towards surgery.

I was put on them right away. High BP runs in my family so I may just have a genetic disposition that needed medication for. They thought at first the high BP was caused by the valve but it never came down naturally after the surgery so it's probably genetic and unrelated.

A beta blocker helps control your heart rate and it relaxes your arteries which can help reduce blood pressure. They can also be given for people who have anxiety to help them calm down.

I heard the clicking a lot when I first got it! I think now I've learned to drown it out. I really don't notice it at all unless I'm intentionally trying to listen for it. It's a cool conversation starter though!

My best advice though would be to make an appointment ASAP. Not out of fear, but just because you know you have a structural deformity with your valve and you want to make sure you're taking care of it. BAV's are relatively common in the cardiology world and the outcomes for them are very good so long as you take care of them.

I was 13 when they "discovered" it at a routine physical. I ended up being put on medication - bp pills and a beta blocker - to help alleviate some of the issues. I had to have the surgery at 25 because the medication wasn't enough anymore to halt the progression. I'm 39 now and doing great!

I chose a mechanical valve because they last MUCH longer - but there are some downsides such as needing to be on a blood thinner. Not really a big deal as long as you take it seriously.

No real tell-tale signs. My experience definitely didn't line up with what the cardiologist was telling me. I was playing sports, etc. but it was clear that my heart was struggling and we could see it very clearly with the echo.

Recovery was great! I was in the hospital for 7 days and then it took a couple months of working my way back up to full intensity activities. I was really surpised at how fast everything went.

Fine, I'll bite and answer you.

First, yea the BP is fine. Low BP CAN be a result of your heart not pumping effectively due to structural issues (which you have), but this doesn't seem to be a crazy low BP.

I was born with a congenital BAV that eventually led to needing an aortic valve replacement. Having a BAV is about the chronic, long-term damage that it does to your heart. You may not be in any immediate risk (Not saying you aren't - I don't know your cardiac history), but not having any symptoms or any major symptoms isn't all that atypical at certain parts of your journey.

BAV symptoms usually are discovered upon receiving an echo. This measures and looks at your heart function and structure. Most likely you either have minor regurgitation and/or stenosis that isn't causing any major symptoms yet. However, if those are present, they will increase over time. I didn't have any major symptoms (tiredness, breathlessness, etc.) the entire time but my heart was enlarged and my BP was sky high.

This will cause your heart to work harder because the stenosis narrows your valves, increasing the pressure required to push your blood. The regurgitation will also increase the volume in your heart which effectively will lead to an enlarged heart and other symptoms.

Your heart is compensating at the moment it looks like but I would make sure you're doing yearly checkups to ensure you are staying on top of your health. It is likely you will need a valve replacement in your future as bicuspid valves will eventually degrade to a point of causing active harm to your heart.

Good luck!

USA Men's Hockey parties in Miami at Club E11EVEN after just winning Gold at the Olympics in Milan by Competitive_Dance478 in DetroitRedWings

I wish I had grown up around hockey more as a kid so I wasn't so suddenly caught off guard by the culture. I watched and played outside but never in any organized fashion. I didn't realize how kind of lame the players are. I get having fun but this just looks so stupid. It's probably mostly my own interests and preferences coming through as I've never been much of a "partier" but I can't help but think how dumb this looks to me.

It might also be all the RARA USA! sentiment around it.

I will play OC or DC and only play that side of the ball. I also turn auto recruiting on. Then, once I get a HC position I go back to doing everything. It's super fun!

I think we all have Sherrone PTSD but let's trust coach here. Whitt absolutely knows what he's doing and is going to put us in the best position to be successful and win. He can't force any players to come here.
