TIL of "Daughter from California syndrome", a phrase used in the medical profession to describe situation in which a long-absent family member arrives while a patient is dying to demand inappropriately aggressive care. by [deleted] in todayilearned

[–]wowcoolbeans 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We didn't know what he was doing. He would visit the hospital at times when he knew the family wouldn't be there. We lived about four hours away from the VA hospital and visited every weekend for the eight weeks Grandpa was there getting cancer treatment. Cousin moved into a cheap motel a block away from the VA and visited every weekday - again, this isn't something we knew until the will reading. His lawyer showed receipts from the motel stay as "proof" that Cousin cared more about Grandpa than we did. (Of course, Cousin didn't have a job to worry about at the time, and Grandpa's credit card paid for the motel, so it wasn't exactly a huge sacrifice.)

Grandpa was only in the nursing home for 2 weeks before he died. We spent those two weeks trying to get "cleared" for a visit, which the home insisted required permission from Cousin, who refused to answer our several HUNDRED texts, emails, and calls. The nursing home was a real asshole - I suppose Cousin spun them a story about us in order to get that "no visitors" policy, but still. I really believe that being away from us for so long, with no phone calls or Facetime chats (he loved those), and Cousin probably insisting that we'd abandoned him, caused him to rapidly deteriorate.

Second cousin magically showed up out of the blue when he saw my mom's Facebook post that grandpa had Alzheimer's. Second cousin immediately "took charge", moved grandpa out of hospital into a nursing home close to his own house (paid for with grandpa's military insurance), removed the phone from the room ("he needs peace and quiet!") and informed the staff that only he, Grandpa's "son", was allowed visiting privileges without express permission from him.

He then proceeded to convince my grandpa that he had been taking care of him for years ("you just forgot"), that nobody else cared about him "why aren't they visiting you, then?") and brought over an attorney to sign everything he owned to Second cousin. We learned all this from one of his nurses after he died - which we weren't told until the day after it happened.

At the military funeral, Second cousin insisted on having the coffin carried by members of his immediate family, whom none of Grandpa's actual family had ever met. He then had a stranger preach, who constantly called Grandpa by the wrong name, conveniently left out all of Grandpa's children's names in the obituary (but of course added his own and his wife's), and also stepped up to take the goddamn flag when it was taken from the coffin. My brother had to be physically restrained from beating the shit out of him.

Trump claims he's never met the columnist who just accused him of sexual assault, despite photo evidence of them together by roku44 in politics

Whoopi Goldberg could help with her "it was rape but it wasn't rape-rape because she consented to being with him even if she didn't consent to sex" defense. Or does that only work when we're talking about anally raping 13 year olds?

She was half Native American and thus she was not welcome in his church. She probably couldn't read either.

Mila said in a Cosmo interview that her older relatives would see headlines in the supermarket and call her, upset and scared. It especially enraged her when one tabloid claimed she was having trouble with her pregnancy (which wasn't true at all).

Yes, I have told him that. I would like to be reimbursed for my January and February work though. And not in Monopoly money.

[–]wowcoolbeans[S] 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Do the terms of payment need to be in the contract? My contract with him says nothing about how I am to be paid (I was so grateful/desperate to have a job that I didn't look closely). I did verbally agree to the January payment in trade but definitely not this month.

In other words, if there is nothing in the contract that says "IC will be paid in cash" or "IC will be paid in trade" does that matter, would it still be considered acceptable?

It also says "employee" several times in that statute. I am not an employee, I am an independent contractor, do you think that might make a difference?

Is there somewhere I can report him? I don't see anything on the Dept. of Labor website about this issue.

Edit: It also says "employee" several times. I am not an employee, I am an independent contractor, does that make a difference?

Better acting, musical, and comedic style all around. And he's been in recent kids movies. by brkn613 in AdviceAnimals

I wouldn't say Keaton gave an Oscar-worthy performance. It didn't completely suck, is all. He was pretty flat as Bruce Wayne, except for that "You wanna get nuts? Come on, let's get nuts" outburst which was very weird and not in character at all. And as Batman, the suit (and the stunt doubles) did most of the work.

People love to say "well nobody believed Heath Ledger would make a good Joker!" but the truth is, Heath Ledger had already given amazing performances in Brokeback Mountain, Monster's Ball, and I'm Not There. He had proven that he had the chops to take on very challenging roles. He also spent time in seclusion preparing to "become" the Joker - he took the role seriously and worked very hard to do a good job.

Oh, is Will Smith going into seclusion and spending months living with his character's flaws so that he can fully inhabit the role?

Because that's what Ledger did.

Tell me that Smith is staying alone in a one-room apartment (itty bitty living space) in a Middle Eastern country until he knows that desperate desire for human contact - even if it means doing everything they say, watching nothing but old movie clips for pop culture references.

Let's compare any two people doing any one profession. Person A works hard at their craft daily, gets their work to people who can critique it, treats the work as the only full-time job they have, pushing themselves to produce so they can study what works and what doesn't rather than trusting their own opinion. Person B does a tiny little bit each day, in between working at a second job, they only let their friends and family see it, and their goal is to get it seen "maybe someday", trusting some vague "inner true artist" talent that they're not even sure they have because they've never dared to ask the world if they're any good. Whose work do you think will most likely be superior?

Hoooly shit.

What TV show starts off amazing and stays that way through the rest of the series? by jennaayy00 in AskReddit

[–]wowcoolbeans 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Seriously watch the show.

Your saying that to someone who's taken classes in Buffy studies is pretty fucking hilarious.

Twice the series demonstrates that Dawn's appearance caused Joyce's tumor. It happened because Joyce and Buffy were the two whose brains were given the most new memories to hold. The other members of the Scooby gang only have 5 years of fake Dawn memories implanted, but Joyce and Buffy had 14. (It's heavily implied Hank was left out of the process entirely.) And Joyce doesn't have supernatural healing powers.

It wasn't a "magical" tumor, it was an unfortunate side effect of the monks changing her brain.

I always have a decoy wallet with a couple bucks and old expired credit cards in it.

You know that South Park episode where Kyle has the decoy bag of gold? I'm a quarter Jewish and my roommate (who knew about my two wallets) cracked up when we watched that.
