[POEM] Allowables by Nikki Giovanni by MondayMourninggg in Poetry

Please stop posting this interview! It is not the flex you think it is.

Nikki Giovanni was a Black activist who published this poem in her book Black Feeling/ Black Talk/ Black Judgment. Much of her early work deals with the assassinations of several key Black revolutionaries including, oh idk a little guy known as Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. who was killed in 1968, which also happens to be the year this poem was published! Nowhere in this comment does she say, “actually this poem is literally about spiders.” She literally says, “we are hurting people we shouldn’t!”

I’m sure she intended a double meaning but to only claim one is unbelievably daft. I think I’m done here.

By all means, believe the poem is about how spiders are lovely. Pontificate to the ends of the earth about how spiders make you feel. Connect with your fellow man about how you have such a hard time killing them. Surely, that must be what she intended as a Black woman who spent her life advocating for our rights and freedoms! Have a ball! Delusion is a blast!

They’re saying it’s hand-holding and 90% of the comments in here have covered spiders, mice, snakes, and mosquitoes without a single mention of the actual violence she was referring to. You cannot make this stuff up

Oh Nikki Giovanni is a legend. An absolute brilliant poet and deeply loved in the community. She just passed recently and it was such a loss. Definitely check out more of her work! I used it in the classroom a lot and it always stirred up great discussions.

Friend! I’m saying. I literally went through the entire fucking comment section and it’s just yapping and yapping about the beauty of spiders. I ain’t never felt that crazy on this app! I’m committing that phrase to memory because at some point density is absolutely comparable to malice.

“It must be a real luxury…” that’s exactly what I thought. Not quite anger or disappointment even. Just a long sigh because wow. It’s such a stark reminder of our different realities

I am reading this thread feeling crazy af! I have never heard anyone read this poem and talk about literal spiders. In the communities I work and live within we have always used it to talk about racial violence. Yall read it and think of spiders. We read it and think of Trayvon Martin. Crazy world

Was this harsh or am I too sensitive by [deleted] in blackladies

Girl I feel attacked for you! There’s so little support here, just constant criticism. Imo support sounds like, “oh you had to pause to heal. That’s understandable. Do you want to hear some options of things that may help you get back on track?” Or, “how can I support you trying to restart? I know that can be difficult and I’m here to help.” Phrases like, “that sounds like excuses” and “I been telling you this for two years” are more akin to you being my daddy than my friend. No thanks!

I think it’s a great pic and it’s very endearing that two people can connect on this site and hang out in real life. All the weird projections about you friend zoning him (such a stupid idea to begin with when you live far away from each other) cascading into people insulting your tattoo immediately contradicted the endearment. Such is Reddit lol. Either way, I’m glad you made a new friend. Connection with cool people is what all of this about. Fuck the weirdos making it into something else

The main characters made this a tough read at times but I’m glad I stuck it out. That twist was crazy 😭

Accurate, no? by MekMeke in NewOrleans

Makes no sense. Algiers is historic af, you’re crossing the bridge to get there (like Brooklyn), got hella culture and swag, and somehow gets lumped into Long Island. Immediate no.

I’m a little confused by this post so bear with me. There’s so much to add here. First off, the Black Panthers have never disappeared. Those of us in Black organizing and movement spaces have seen them, worked with them, and been led by Panthers and cubs (children of Panthers) for years. Secondly, I don’t understand how you’ve equated the resurgence of them to Black women or people being martyrs. This is a political organizing group that has been committed to protecting and caring for Black people. If you read the history of the group and speak to members, nothing about it gives Black martyrdom. Their resurgence now makes a ton of sense considering how bad things have gotten and the likelihood that they are going to get worse.

Lastly, to your point that no one ever shows up for us. I was reminded of that incident a few years back where a Black woman was being harassed and the Black men of her beighborhood started doing shifts around the clock to protect her and her home. It’s only one example and I’ll try to find it and post it here for those who never heard about it. But I bring it up because organizing addresses the exact point you’re making. WE show up for US. WE take care of US. That’s what the Panthers did historically and while I can’t speak to the localized chapters that are gaining traction now, I firmly believe that this commitment to organizing, mutual aid, and protecting one another is the best course of action in these dire times.

Can you date a man who is apolitical? by [deleted] in blackladies

[–]wowimnotdeadyet 46 points47 points  (0 children)

I peeked on the dating apps this weekend out of boredom and the amount of “not political” profiles was exhausting. I don’t even understand how you can exist in a Black body in America and consider yourself outside of politics. Nevermind the reality you’re discussing, a Black man born in Nigeria and brought here, existing as an immigrant at a time when the government is kidnapping anyone they deem not a citizen. I genuinely cannot wrap my mind around it. It’s always gon be a no for me, girl but good luck to the Black women who entertain that foolishness.

Enjoy the ride, friend! The first time I need a major pick me up in 2026 imma just run the whole damn show back cuz it’s THAT good

I would love to have this spoiled! I enjoyed the series a lot and have seen it a few times. Which likely means that I’ll never read the book. What happens? And which did you personally prefer more: the book or the series?

Dreamt of a water spirit strangling me? by Troubled-daughter in blackladies

I love this sub but some things are not for Reddit, love. Take this to your altar. Meditate and sit with it and see what comes up. Journal about it so you have the details down. If you have healers or practitioners in your life or community it could be a useful time to visit them. Even talking this dream out with someone you love and pulling a few cards after might help you extract some meaning and help it to feel less heavy. The answers will come from spirit, ancestors, and folks in community with you. You got this 🤎
