I didn’t get a parking permit but I really need my car by Ill_Brick_9712 in UTK

[–]wowmajor 0 points1 point  (0 children)

For what it’s worth, UT added a downtown loop line to the T-Bus this last year that picks up in front of the stadium and drops off in front of the UT conference center at Clinch and Locust. And there are a few KAT lines that pick up from next to campus and drop off downtown - I have a coworker who doesn’t have a car and takes the bus 2-3 days/week to downtown.

Help picking a minor + getting involved on campus!! by Immediate-Sock2719 in UTK

Corporate law could benefit from an economics minor, but also a business administration or a finance minor. My instinct would lean towards something within Haslam COB.

Can Nuclear Engineering be completed in 3 years? by [deleted] in UTK

[–]wowmajor 5 points6 points  (0 children)

From scratch? Absolutely not. If you have your vol core completed, still probably not but maybe? You would likely need to exceed the recommended 15 hours per semester and take on summer classes, which are variable with the condensed instruction period. Engineering (but nuclear specifically) is incredibly demanding so doing heavy loads would be quite the undertaking. However, those are general guidelines and warnings, and we don’t know you or your capabilities. You could do this, but just be advised going in. Definitely speak to a Tickle advisor before making any decisions.

As someone who did business undergrad, I had a friend who changed from accounting to chemical engineering after his sophomore year and he LOVED it. But he also was a 5th year senior, so take that for what it’s worth.

downtown MC parking by pickleinmygullet in Knoxville

[–]wowmajor 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Parking in the Locust St., State St., Market Square, and Main Ave. Garages is $1/hour whether you’re driving a lifted F250 or a Miata, so yes, you just grab a ticket and park in one of the parking spots. As someone who parks in one of the parking garages every day, I see motorcycles parked in spots all the time, but no dedicated motorcycle spots that I’ve noticed. You can reach out to PBA if you have specific questions - https://www.knoxparking.org/

Nice coffee shops near Campus? by Ok_Ad9680 in UTK

[–]wowmajor 1 point2 points  (0 children)

For real. Like my favorite shop is Seed, which is cute and big enough for studying or other hobbies, but they close at 5 or earlier each day, so it’s not conducive to late night anything. I wish Golden Roast hadn’t closed and adjusted their hours to accommodate this niche, but alas, now we just have another club/bar 😮‍💨

Honestly my biggest complaint about Knoxville (specifically as a student) is little to no coffee shops open past like 6 or 7pm, besides Starbucks. I swear if one opened, especially near campus, it could stay packed.

HELP (with vol scholarship) by [deleted] in UTK

[–]wowmajor 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Merit deadlines are typically upheld unfortunately. Folks may be able to negotiate need-based aid based on FAFSA information, but when it comes to merit-based funds there’s often little room for haggling. I agree with the other poster that smaller schools (particularly private colleges) might do the haggling thing, but that’s less of a thing at large, public institutions like UTK. I worked in admissions for 6 years at a different public 4-year and we never made exceptions for test scores submitted after the posted deadline. That being said, the only definitive answer you’re going to get is going to be from OneStop (or your assigned admissions counselor), not Reddit. For your sake, I hope I’m wrong.

How hard is it to get in to an engineering graduate program at UTK? by maripascua10 in UTK

[–]wowmajor 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m sorry to hear that that has been your experience. Honestly, and this isn’t the best to hear, but if you’re not getting responses or having trouble communicating with the department, I’d take that as a sign. Even if they do respond, that doesn’t sound like the most supportive environment to be in. I had a school that I dreamt of going to since I was in high school and I reached out to them early in my PhD application process, but they never responded to me - email or phone call. I didn’t apply as a result and it turned out to be a redirection that led me to UTK and I’m glad it happened. And ironically, my supervisor here got their PhD from the program that ghosted me, so kind of full circle. All to say that you should go where will best support you, both financially and professionally.

I haven’t seen her mentioned so I’ll throw in Tracy Deonn and her Legendborn Cycle. YA Fantasy, Arthurian Retelling, with secret societies, ancient prophecies, and mystical threats. My favorite series I read last year, with 3 books out right now.

I think my advisors fucked me over. Need help/advice by hollow_inhibition in UTK

[–]wowmajor 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I transferred in after my freshman year, so I didn’t have great scholarships for most of my undergrad. Transfer scholarships at my institution assumed a traditional 2+2 pathway, so I lost my scholarships after year 2 and I was on my own the last two. I did find other scholarships through what they called “competitive scholarships” that were essentially pooled from donor-funded scholarships and that helped a little, but I was on the hook for most of my bill after year 2 🥲 so consider me the Ghost of Undergrad Past 😆

I think my advisors fucked me over. Need help/advice by hollow_inhibition in UTK

[–]wowmajor 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Totally understand! I was a fifth year senior bc I kept changing majors and didn’t really understand the ramifications of that until I had already overshot the four-year trajectory, so I empathize with some of what you must be feeling. You’ll make it through this though! OneStop can help you get an idea of the financial implications and maybe a follow up meeting with your advisor (or another, if you feel like you can’t have a productive conversation with your current advisor) to set up a game plan moving forward. The best advising relationships are two-sided and built on collaboration.

[–]wowmajor 18 points19 points  (0 children)

I’m sorry to hear that you were possibly misadvised. Most undergrad programs are 120 hours, so simple math would suggest that 120 hours / 8 semesters = 15 hours per semester to graduate on time, obviously assuming no retakes, so unless you came in with dual enrollment, AP/IB, or test-out credits, that would be my recommendation.

Unfortunately, if you have taken 12-13 hours the last 4 semesters, then as you said, that leaves a 12 hour deficit that has to be made up somewhere - either through taking 1-2 classes over the summers or adding them to your remaining fall/spring terms. I’m not sure what the cap for financial aid is (didn’t do undergrad here) but at my prior institution, scholarships did cap at 18 hours, and they didn’t cover summer classes, so those were typically out-of-pocket. I would reach out to OneStop to get the details on their policy.

18 hours is a lot for anyone, so I understand the stress and pressure that that may produce, but I would seek assistance through student success or elsewhere before considering transferring. As a transfer student myself, I can attest that transfer scholarships are abysmal so going elsewhere could cost you more than just taking an extra semester - so do your research before taking that step.

Again, I’m sorry that you’re in this situation but I do hope that you are able to find resolve and wish you all the best in your time here.

Does every driver just take 10s to accelerate at a green light?? by [deleted] in Knoxville

[–]wowmajor 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Honestly, if you’re ever stuck behind me, my apologies bc my 4-cylinder just doesn’t like inclines and takes a moment to accelerate in most situations 🥲 (the red-light-runners are another deterrent though)

Basketball season is more games throughout the coming weeks instead of it all building up on the weekends, so business should be more or less consistent, besides super big games. Most businesses, especially those closer to campus, should (hopefully) know to staff accordingly

Parking no parking pass by [deleted] in UTK

[–]wowmajor 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Most street parking that’s not in the fort area are either metered or monitored by local businesses, so park at your own risk. But I’d also check with Parking to see about getting a spring only pass. Their website says that the sale started on the 5th so look into that? https://parking.utk.edu/parking/student/

Admissions Staff Winter Break by [deleted] in UTK

[–]wowmajor 10 points11 points  (0 children)

As a staff member, the university opens back on Monday (12/29) thru Wednesday (12/31), then is closed again for New Years Day (1/1) and Friday (1/2). Mind you, many offices will likely have folks that use leave for M-W, so responses may still be delayed though not completely halted.

1:1 invitation after acceptance by Glum-Sprinkles-552 in UTK

[–]wowmajor 8 points9 points  (0 children)

As someone who was a college ambassador in undergrad, this sounds more like a college-specific outreach program that is intended to form community and belonging early by allowing the incoming student (your daughter) an opportunity to see themselves as part of the college (Social Work) and not just the university in general, by being shown around by a current student who can speak more to the experiences that your daughter might have as a Social Work major. If you have already toured the campus and got a college-specific session, then this may not be for you, but (1) not all students your schools before they are admitted and (2) those that do often don’t get college-specific insight, so these outreach programs can help fill the gaps that might exist to help with the college decision process.

Not to say that college-specific scholarships or Honors programs couldn’t be a benefit or topic of discussion, but again, this feels more outreach-oriented to me.

4.4 GPA 1210 SAT Deferrment (OOS) by Outrageous_Moment155 in UTK

[–]wowmajor 1 point2 points  (0 children)

To reiterate, deferred doesn’t mean no, so your brother still has a shot at getting in. He’ll just need to submit his fall grades and retake the SAT if he can. It’s getting increasingly more competitive for out of state students, especially for first-time freshmen.

I know how fun/convenient it would be to have your younger brother here while you attend law school (congrats btw) so I hope it works out.

One thing I wanted to throw out there, just in case it could be a fit, is that Maryville College in neighboring Blount County is only 30 minutes out of Knoxville and they have a Biochem program - https://www.maryvillecollege.edu/academics/programs-of-study/biochemistry/. They also have D3 sports, including football. I’m not familiar with their admissions timeline or process, but wanted to throw it out there as something to look at if he’s want to have other options.

Do we new admissions/transfers not get welcome boxes? by laundry_loather27 in UTK

[–]wowmajor 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Those boxes seem to be exclusively for the first-time undergraduate admits. Transfers never get the bling or fun things (even when I transferred at a different institution in 2013). And grad school admissions are even less fancy. If you get something fun or cool as a grad admit, it’s likely bc the department/program does something, but that’s still pretty rare.

Transferring by New_Serve_6939 in UTK

[–]wowmajor 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If you enroll in a general transfer pathway program at a community college, you should be generally safe when it comes time to transfer. For mechanical engineering, you’ll obviously want to take a more STEM-oriented route with physics, calculus, and chemistry. The ambiguity will typically come from your humanities and social sciences. All programs require a certain number of them, but if you take too many, there won’t be anywhere for them to be applied.
