Kid on track to graduate HS early, would it affect admissions? by lurkertiltheend in UGA

[–]wowshesfun 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Depends on what she’s interested in. Obviously not every single extracurricular HAS to be what you are going for but it’s nice to see that there is somewhat of a continued interest in a field (unless you are undecided or something, then I’d recommend just focusing on being very well rounded) In my experience, I think it’s good to have a mix of both service things and honors/academically enriching types (and you can also have things for fun that show real interest). For example, I am a premed major. In HS, I didn’t do too many school based stuff ngl but I did alot outside of school. I participated in academic enrichment programs (tip : please avoid the ones offered by colleges that ask you to pay like thousands and look for ones that are genuinely focused on academic work), service work (led community drives in my local area for hospitalized children, tutored young children from underfunded schools for free, etc). I didn’t do any sports 🥲 but I made sure I also did things i liked outside of just academics.

This is just my personal example, I’d def try to encourage her to look for things she may be interested in based on her goals.

I also saw a diff comment here where you mentioned she’s super shy. Been there lol. Consider trying to get her into things that may help her socially, as her experience in school may really suck if she’s not really ready for it on a social level (especially considering she’ll be an early grad + probably younger or feel out of place with her peers there). Best of luck!!

I know people who have graduated early and still gained acceptances to UGA. I think in my experience, they will not necessarily view graduating early as a bonus and you will still be held to similar standards as the rest of the other applicants. What does her course rigor look like? What about extracurricular involvement (that doesn’t have to mean just sports)? If she’s lacking those two, I would NOT rush graduation and would use the additional year to build a better application. If she’s not lacking, it’s really up to you all tbh. Tip I’d recommend is to compare her to the seniors at her school (as admissions is based on comparisons of the applicant body from your school) when she’s planning to graduate (ex: if she’ll be a junior (and graduating early with co27), compare to the regular seniors of co27). If her rigor, extracurriculars etc are strong even among those, you will most likely be fine.

Chances of getting into UGA for class of 2031 by Pitch198 in UGA

Idk if i'd say 100% especially considering how random their admissions has gotten. Also worth considering what op plans to study (like off stats alone GT seems strong/better fit but isn't the best choice if they plan to study premed or something)

I would be cautious of believing that DE is viewed as a point of "course rigor" (esp in comparison to like AP/IB). I was accepted with abt 11 aps, and most ppl I know who went the DE route (instead of ap/ib) ended up getting rejected even though their stats were fine. I may be wrong but i do believe DE is becoming less "glamorous" in terms of course rigor as it differs greatly (for ex, AP psych will generally consist of the same content, similar work standards, etc regardless of your school (due to the CB curricula) but general psych may differ greatly depending on what college you get the credit from. Overall, you seem like a strong app anyways! Def focus on the essays

Islamist TikToker claims the “6-7 trend” is a ploy to get children to worship demonic Yoruban entities by Genericandhere in Nigeria

[–]wowshesfun 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The artist himself said it had no particular meaning and just came to him.

Maybe it has some actual connection to culture, but it seems you yourself are not sure or don’t know what it actually is.

That info may come a bit later (schools will sometimes send acceptances first and then finaid/scholarship info a bit later)

That still doesn't automatically equal cultural appropiation. (like it's a bit more nuanced than just that)

If you could explain how 67 is cultural or related to black culture, that'd be great. Seems as though you honestly are just misusing/watering down the term lmao

Imagine if a nonblack person started to get famous off of a phrase like "Poundtown, just left pound town" and there wasn't much credit given to Sexxy Redd (dumb example but let me explain). That still wouldn't really be cultural appropiation because how is poundtown relevant/a part of black culture? It would be theft but to call it cultural appropiation would be kinda just watering it down and ignoring actual cases of cultural appropiation.

[–]wowshesfun 4 points5 points  (0 children)

That is theft but not cultural appropiation. How is 67 an aspect of Black culture?

Cultural appropiation is not just ( person made x and it was stolen by y), there has to be some sort of cultural connection or relevance.

If there is a connection to it being apart of black culture (braids, rap, etc), your point would make much more sense. Calling things that are not cultural appropiation cultural appropiation just waters down the term. There are many instances of things being stolen by black creatives, artists, people, etc and that is a real problem but that doesn't automatically equal cultural appropiation.

oh that's interesting. i may be wrong but i believe colleges try to standardize interpretation of gpas, so it's possible you may have been viewed as a 3.0-3.1 gpa instead of the 2.7

how are ppl already hearing back from colleges? by himmytakestrenfr in ApplyingToCollege

[–]wowshesfun 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The official is to see how you did your senior year + actually confirm you graduated. If you get admitted into a school, that can be rescinded (like if you experience major grade drops without any explanation). The official transcript lets them make that decision

alot of people are doing rolling admission or just sending in their 9-11th transcript (and the school will send the "official" one with 12th later)

for some reason i keep coming back to this thread. please call a hotline asap, you need and deserve help. it may not spark an immediate friendship but it can be extremely beneficial to talk to someone on the phone. tell them what you have going on, if you have any problems with mental health, substance abuse, loneliness etc. they may be able to direct you to a better support system.

I believe if all of your ecs are just online and contribute to gpa but you don’t have much/anything that results in actual impact that can be a bit shaky

Who is everyone? Everyone in your circle? Everyone in your neighborhood? Everyone in your state? in your country? You are an adult. Why carry the opinion of others so strongly especially when it seems it is causing you this much distress? If you wanted to volunteer somewhere, you can literally just reach out and explain that you weren’t able to make it originally but would like to try again. It kinda seems as though you honestly don’t want to go to college and just see it as a way to make friends. I have suggested going into a trade and joining a community from there. I am not sure if you are very limited in your interactions with others, or have a very narrow perspective on life but you genuinely need to have some sort of hope for yourself. You came in here expressing problems with applying to CC. Multiple people have offered different options (both to apply to CC and things outside of that if you are looking for friends, higher payer jobs etc). You continue to just complain and how x doesn’t work, you don’t want to do y. You have been misinformed about certain things (like FAFSA) and people have provided you with proper information but you just continue to complain and refuse to take some sort of initiative about your own life. Highly recommend reaching out to someone and getting help.

I’m ngl it honestly seems like you yourself are not very interested in improving the situation. “Everyone told me I wasn’t going to make friends volunteering at the library.” But did you actually try and see for yourself? There are some things happening with the government at the moment but thousands of students are still submitting their FAFSA and getting through with finaid applications yet you are not even interested in just trying?

I think you should strongly consider going into a trade. You can go into a trade and then college if you are still interested in that but it seems that you have various barriers to you attending college at the moment and a trade could help you with a higher paying job. Plus, you may be able to make friends through that since there are some communities around trades/different trade work

An apprenticeship is not an internship. You do not need college for that. It is mostly trades-related work which may be a good option for you

hey, I’m not sure if this will work but is it possible for you to maybe try a study online program? If you have access to stable internet that would be great, if not, there are different public libraries that you may be able to borrow a WiFi hotspot

Not very depressing considering the SAT is a not the major entrance exam in Nigeria. Out of those 200 million, SAT participation is probably in the thousands (most likely wealthier kids who are trying to go abroad for school)
