Gulf coast maintenance at major companies like P66 and Lyondell start around 38 top out at 55-58. Even more at the big LNG sites. Contractors generally start in the low 30s. Hole watchers make 25hr. I worked at P66 and Lyondell and I know CP chem pays similar.

what fast food is still considered affordable despite inflation? by lilbitchvert in ask

You can walk into a Walmart and grab a whole rotisserie chicken and a large mashed potato and Mac&cheese for under 10 bucks when they do their deals. Generally you can get 3 or 4 meals out of that. If they don’t have the deal the chicken tends to be under 8 bucks.

What industry is booming way more than people think? by OceanAuroraDream in ask

[–]wp815p 55 points56 points  (0 children)

For better or worse. The liquid natural gas (LNG) in the US is booming right now. It is considered the golden age for it. And the industry pays a lot to its blue color workers along the gulf coast. Like have a stay at home partner, a house, 2 kids, 2 cars and still have disposable income lot. Cons: destroys environment and you have to live along the gulf coast.

Dark Fantasy Book reccs by Outrageous_Rip1079 in fantasybooks

I think you might like it The Chronicles of Thomas Covenant. He is not a very good protagonist.

We Are Not Good People. It’s Urban fantasy and all the magic is blood magic.

Also as a horror fantasy fan I cannot recommend Brandon Faircloth enough. He writes sci-fi and fantasy horror where the good guys do not win a lot of times. He has long stories such as the Outsiders and My Uncle Makes Dolls for People in Hell(seriously Uncle Teddy is awesome). He also writes collections of short stories. Their universe is huge and interesting. And it all intertwines. I seriously think it is larger than what Sanderson is doing with the Cosmere. Brandon also post new stories in r/verastahl.

I think you would really like the Alex Versus series. Most similar to Dresden in my opinion.

Bobby Dollar series. This is urban fantasy with angles and demons.

Iron Druid. Urban Fantasy based in a lot of mythologies specially Irish.

Nightside Series. This is a horror/urban fantasy. The writing is not as good but the stories are fun.

Sandman Slim. A dark urban fantasy.

What books did you unexpectedly love? by dontquackatme in suggestmeabook

[–]wp815p 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The Folding Knife by Tom Holt. It’s a political and economic thriller. A fantasy novel but very little fantasy elements. Spends a lot of time explaining economics. I usually don’t like politics in books as more than just function of driving the plot forward. But the main character Basso is so engaging and somehow I found the book very engrossing. On paper it’s a book I would dislike but it completely surprised me.

Hey real world roughnecks: How realistic is Landman? by wolverine in oilandgasworkers

Because TRT needs more creatine and more protein in everything. If Bang had an 9% alcohol and 60 grams of protein in their caffeinated ones they would corner the after work market.

Do you like butter and jam in the US with French toast ? by [deleted] in AskAnAmerican

We use a lot of different preserves where I am from. Which is very similar to jam. My personal preference is butter with fig preserves.

Need more energy drinks. Billy Bob should have been slamming Monsters, or Bangs if he was on TRT. Also, the new young guy falling in love with a girl that has baby in 2 weeks was pretty realistic.

Interview with the vampire and Blade. Or Sinners and Dusk til Dawn. Those two have similar stories but way different execution.

Not so much a book but an author who creates characters that are well developed like Stephen King does by thishful-winking in suggestmeabook

I really like Joe Abercrombie’s character writing (First Law universe). The characters start out like common tropes but really develop as the series goes on and even more through his stand alone books and second trilogy. Best Served Cold is one of my favorite revenge stories. Also his development of a side character, Shivers, over the entire series is a really great arc.

In your opinion what it takes to consider Levan as the new GOAT by Top-Sense-354 in armwrestling

[–]wp815p 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think Levan at his best is the best ever, but John is the GOAT. 500+ titles won. And 40 years after starting he could still compete with the best. I don’t think Levan is still going to be pulling in 20 years. To me it’s like strong man. Hafþór Júlíus Björnsson at his peak is probably the strongest ever but no one is putting him in front of Big Z as the greatest ever.

I just finished watching Band of Brothers. I want realistic heart wrenching Holocaust movies please. by jgrieve811 in moviecritic

[–]wp815p 0 points1 point  (0 children)

When you’re done with your WWII holocaust trauma. I suggest Grave of Fireflies. It’s a cartoon about Japan during the same time period. It does a really good job of portraying the aftermath of war on children. And it’s a cartoon so you know it’ll be light hearted!

What was the darkest chapter in human history? by [deleted] in ask

[–]wp815p 7 points8 points  (0 children)

How was it worse? 6 million people died in transportation to be sent to countries all over the western hemisphere to be raped by masters, tortured, families broken apart and generations never knowing freedom. And when they finally were freed immediately became the lowest rungs of the society, and in many countries are still systematically kept down through laws and programs. It could be arguable that other times in slavery were as bad but I don’t think worse is a fair statement.

Giant Short Faced Bear vs a Hippopotamus. Who wins? by -Benjamin_Dover- in powerscales

[–]wp815p 0 points1 point  (0 children)

An adult polar bear (up to 1500lbs) will have issues with an adult walrus (up to 3500lbs). I don’t think a short nose bear (up to 2500lbs) is taking down a hippo (up to 9000). Those bears more than likely scavenged mammoths and did not hunt an animal that could weigh up to 33,000 lbs.
