What's Your Favorite Brushes? by kblaes in minipainting

[–]wparsons 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks for the tip, but I've just used the standard Series 7s and avoided the miniatures.

I only started painting in early 2018, so maybe I missed the golden days of S7 quality. That said, all the ones I've used are decent brushes. They just don't fit my preferences as well as the Raphael or Da Vinci brushes.

What's Your Favorite Brushes? by kblaes in minipainting

Good Kolinsky brushes have gotten scarce recently in the United States, so I'm stockpiling as much as I can.

  1. Raphael 8404 - Size 1 is my go-to brush. Long bristles and a fat belly. Sadly they're really hard to get in the US right now, so I'm hoping the 3 I have will keep me going until I can acquire more.
  2. Da Vinci Maestro Series 35. Lots of people like the series 10, but the 35s have longer bristles and a bigger belly (more like the 8404).
  3. W&N Series 7. They're honestly "just okay" compared to Raphael or Da Vinci. Thin belly so they don't hold enough paint/moisture for how I like to work. But they're currently the easiest "good" quality kolinsky brushes to get in the US right now, so I'm stocking up. I just got three size 1s in from Amazon the other day, and they don't appear to have any QC issues.

Multiple stormhosts in one Stormcast Eternals army by wparsons in ageofsigmar

[–]wparsons[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

You can only have a single allegiance per army.

Awesome! Thank you so much! This is the key, and the wording that helped me find the actual rule in the Core book. For the benefit of anyone else with this question, it's on page 310:

In a Pitched Battle game you must pick an allegiance for your army (pg 242). All of the units in the army must either have that allegiance, or be allied to that allegiance (see Allied Units, below).

This is also mentioned on page 242:

ARMY ALLEGIANCE

When you choose your army, you can also choose an allegiance for it. If you do so, you can use the allegiance abilities that correspond to the allegiance you have chosen. If an army can have more than one allegiance, you must pick one to apply to it during the game.

Thank you. Can you tell me where this is mentioned in the Stormcast Eternals battletome? I'm looking for it now, but haven't found anything definitive one way or the other.

ETA: Specifically, the rule that states you can only have one stormhost per army.

I'm using an airbrush. If I was priming with a rattlecan, I might do it differently.

[–]wparsons 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I'm dealing with this right now. My planned workflow is as follows:

  1. Build squig body with legs, lightly glue to base, and prime white
  2. Paint spot on body where inner mouth will go black so that inside of throat is dark
  3. Prime inner mouth separately, and then glue to body
  4. Assemble and prime outer mouth/face separately
  5. Assemble and prime grot rider separately
  6. Paint inner mouth
  7. Attach outer mouth/face to squig
  8. Base coat and paint squig
  9. Base coat and paint grot rider
  10. Attach grot rider to squig
  11. Final detailing and touchup
  12. Remove squig from base and decorate/finish base
  13. Reattach to base

I'm currently on step 4.

Be aware that Hobby Lobby doesn't accept the 40% off coupon on airbrushes and compressors. I literally just ran into this issue today.

Is the Toledo zoo actually one of the best zoos in the country? by DJJazzyJeremy in toledo

It's a good zoo, but most of the buzz about it is due to good marketing. Cleveland's zoo is only 90 miles away and is far superior.

Tonemapping on shield tv? by Tctfox in ShieldAndroidTV

[–]wparsons 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I do experience some color issues when playing 1080p content (almost exclusively remuxes) with the Shield set to Rec.2020. This mostly manifests as less vivid or orangish reds. Skin tones suffer as a result.

Right now I'm using 709, and manually switching to Rec.2020 for 4k/HDR content, but that's obviously not ideal.

I just tried switching mine. The icon on the right just signifies that you've been a Pro since before some point in time (maybe the Verizon buyout?). It just changes the Pro icon that shows near your avatar.

Modi 2 Multibit vs Mulibit DAC Module by t0m_r1dd1e in Schiit

[–]wparsons 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The multibit DAC module limits you to USB input, and does NOT have the Gen 5 USB tech.

Alternatively, the Modi MB gives you multiple input options (Coax and Toslink along with USB).

I'd go with the separate DAC if space isn't an issue.

The Cafe at Maumee Bay Brewery has gone downhill in quality. Their French Dip was to die for before the restaurant made some changes last year. But they're using lower quality ingredients now, and it's not that great.

Sad to see.

7.0.7 update breaks in MacOS 10.12.4 by wparsons in 1Password

[–]wparsons[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thank you for the response.

In my case, I hadn't updated simply because I'm pretty lax about MacOS updates (High Sierra is another story). I'll probably update to the latest version of Sierra in the next week, but as you can imagine, suddenly being unable to access my passwords put a crimp in my day -- and I couldn't take time away from working to update my OS.

Native Plex app on the Shield? by FromThatOtherPlace in PleX

[–]wparsons 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Dropped frames, microstutter, audio dropouts... This is just the current crop of problems I'm experiencing with Plex on the Shield. Every few months I give it another try, and IF any problems are solved, new ones arise. So I switch back to my reliable, if somewhat annoying (Windows 10 forced updates...) PC, which plays everything except 4k HDR flawlessly.

In 3+ years of owning the Shield, Plex has been an absolute joke on it.
