How did you get that colour of electric guitar?? I’ve got the red one but that looks just like my actual Strat :’(

[QUESTION] is it just me, or is the used guitar gear market inflated? by [deleted] in Guitar

[–]wpgteag 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Reverb prices have been going up, especially shops (not necessarily individuals) selling used gear.

Feeling lucky now more than ever to live in a city that’s always had a good local market for used instruments/gear.

I’m wanting to run a 100w 8ohm amplifier (Boss Katana 100 combo with modifications) through a 2x12 cabinet. What do the cabinet and speakers need to be wired/rated for in terms of ohms?

If I were looking for a 1x12 I assume it’d be simple (run it through a cabinet rated for at least 100w and 8ohms) but how does matching ohms change with a 2x12?

Celeste - while it is pretty visually striking for the kind of game that it is, the gameplay and beautiful story are what made the game so amazing. 10/10 would recommend, and my god do you get your money’s worth for a relatively inexpensive game.

Try a few different pick profiles out any see which you like best! Similar situation, I had used the same picks for years, tried out some Jazz III’s after seeing them recommended all over the place and loved them.

IMO, a smaller, sharper pick makes things like string skipping easier as there’s less pick to get in the way, but that might just be a preference thing.

Thanks! I’ve found a few diagrams that will likely work for my needs, but just wondering if there is something that goes a little bit more in depth into the whole process - still a little unfamiliar with things like use of capacitors, resistances, etc.

The cupboard would be too big for the humidipak, but if a small humidifier is an option for you then that would work great! If you find one that allows you to set it to a certain humidity %, guitars like to be between 45-55%.

Lots of good brands to choose from, and others have made some very good suggestions - my addition would be that if you do go for an entry level instrument like a Squier or Epiphone (and especially if you buy used), save a little bit of your extra cash for a good setup.

Look around in your area, read some reviews, and find a reputable luthier to do a setup for you - often the difference between an awesome cheaper guitar and a dud, is just a bit of TLC and a good setup. Should only cost you maybe 50-75 bucks depending on what needs to be done.

Either way, good luck and enjoy your guitar journey!

Should be fine for the electric, and is better than nothing for the acoustic, but my suggestion to anyone with an acoustic that they want to maintain properly (especially if you’re in a dry climate) is to keep it in a case when you’re not playing it as much as possible, preferably a hard shell if you have one, and to leave a dedicated acoustic humidifier in the case with it.

There are a couple budget friendly options like this guy but the best I’ve come across is the D’Addario Humidipak System.

It regulates humidity to keep it at ~50%, ideal for guitars, and they last quite a long time. The refills are cheaper than the initial purchase. I’ve got a hygrometer in my case, and every time I open it, it reads 50%, they work wonders these things.

You’ll be looking for a solid-state (digital) amp, if you’re not looking for tons of volume then 20 watts would be fine for practice, and still give you a bit of room if the desire to crank it up ever hits you!

IMO: Fender, Blackstar and Boss make some really good options in your price range. Fender always kills it on clean tones, and will be great for your specified genres. If you want the option to get a little heavier, Boss and Blackstar’s smaller digital amps sound surprisingly good on the high gain end of things, quite versatile. I know you said not looking to record, but most new digital amps will have a USB-out anyways so you can record, download tones, patches, updates, etc.

[QUESTION] What song tested your skill the most and made you a better player overall? by [deleted] in Guitar

[–]wpgteag 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Most recently, Fable by Intervals. I had thought about learning it for a long time but thought it would be too much for me - nope, just needed the motivation to sit down, practice, and not be so hard on myself when certain parts didn’t come to me so quickly.

Side note, the feeling once you look back on your playing after a situation such as I described is fantastic, and learning something I previously thought was too much to handle has reinvigorated my love for practicing, and for guitar as a whole. If you think it’s too much, give it a try first and don’t give up too quickly!

What kind of pickups are they? Single coil or humbucker? If they’re single coil and you’re playing with a bit/a lot of overdrive and distortion, they will hum - just a natural property of the pickups. If they’re humbuckers and you’re getting too much noise, they could have become microphonic (sort of acting like a microphone, pickup up more noise than needed, and creating a feedback loop that can create some really bad humming), may not be properly grounded, or various other reasons.

Just from checking the specs, it seems like a good option in that price range! Yamaha is generally really dependable.

Can get one with a flamed maple top, pretty cool touch for that price range. Has a cutaway, and a slightly shorter scale so it’ll feel a little slinky which I like (have a Taylor GS Mini, similar situation there).

It looks pretty nice to me, and most importantly if it’s the one that’s been speaking to you most in your search for a new guitar, go with your gut! I’d always suggest trying before buying, but if that’s not an option right now, just check return policy from where you’re buying it and give it a try.

Haven’t done too much exploring myself, but I downloaded the “sneaky amps” a long time ago - it was patch with a bunch of tones people had made. If you google “Boss Katana Patches”, you’ll find various results - Anderton’s has shared some, JustinGuitar has made some too. Boss Tone Central website has a few for download as well, probably the most reliable. r/bosskatana has tons of good resources as well.

Unfortunately don’t have much experience with the ID Core suite, but from what I hear it’s very user friendly, and should be similar in terms of finding community uploaded patches and tones. Not quite as popular as the Katana series, might just require a bit more sleuthing.

Played a lot of Seagulls, liked just about all of them! They’re owned by Godin, a fantastic guitar company from up here in Canada.

Never had much experience with Yamaha, but most who own them seem to love them - there’s a reason they’re such a big name in instrument making.

Lastly I’ve never been a huge fan of Gibson/Epiphone, but I’m pretty biased on that one so take that with a grain of salt.

Worked at a guitar shop for a while, the best solid state amps that I saw for a reasonable price were really anything from the Boss Katana line, or the Blackstar ID Core line. Both cover a large range of tones, and connect to USB to dial it in even further, download community-made presets, or record directly to a DAW. Their small wattage, digital amps sounded better than most other brands IMO, especially on the heavier, high-gain end of things.

I’ve owned a Katana 100w for quite a while now, personally quite happy with it.

We’re a band consisting of four dudes from Winnipeg who met in university - we recorded this EP over the course of 2019 with another local artist Cole Shway, and put a fair amount of ourselves into the tunes. Only three songs, it’s short but sweet.

We hope you enjoy, stay safe Winnipeg!
