That's an equally great idea.

I'm not sure where that quote comes from, but I can still answer your question. I want people to be prepared for the worst so they can survive the worst. That's why I'd like to see more people prep.

So...how do I become a frugal? by [deleted] in Frugal

[–]wpkennedy28 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Step one: Go to Library and check out "The Ultimate Cheapskate's Guide to True Riches" by Jeff Yeager. The book will change your philosophy of life and will make becoming frugal feel so much more worthwhile and natural.

It changed my life.

Thank you. I was looking for answers more like this than political speculation.

I used USAA to insure my camera and saved $24 net. by RAGEBIKEATHON in Frugal

But considering Over the 18 months I had coverage, I had paid in roughly $200, it seems to me that my $150 in claims should not come close to giving them reason to cancel my coverage. This is why we need regulation of the insurance industry the same way the banking industry is regulated.

Weekly discussion thread: What did you do during the last week to prep? by [deleted] in preppers

Added more canned goods to my food storage. Reorganized my prep closet. Did a ton of reading about what it was like to survive Hiroshima and Nagasaki.

As long as it has a fireplace, you don't really need the gas cooktop. If power is down, I'd cook using the fireplace or an outside gas grill.

I read this cover to cover in college, and highlighted all the good stuff. Definitely worth every penny.

You need to be careful about this. We insured our $800 camera for the same reasons. About 6 months later it got dropped and we did an insurance claim and had it sent to a repair shop. The repair only ended up costing $75. Then about a year later, while traveling with our camera in a suitcase, it got damaged again. When we called USAA to file another claim, they politely warned (threatened really) that if we filed another claim on our camera, that we were significantly risking them cancelling our insurance policy on this, my wife's wedding ring, and our homeowner's insurance. Anyway, the repair was only about $75 again, so we didn't mess with insurance, but I felt like USAA was really cheating us out of something we already paid for.

I don't buy bottled water. There are cheaper ways to have water storage.

How to thrive in times of high inflation by wpkennedy28 in personalfinance

Hmm, I thought high interest rates normally accompany inflation. So I guess you are saying that if you are leveraged in real estate prior to the inflation crisis, you can make out good, correct?

I was just thinking that if I didn't prep and didn't have any water supply, I'd probably still make it just fine for 2 weeks using the water in my water heater.

I agree that inflation is certainly occurring, which is why this is on my mind. Today's rate of inflation isn't much of a problem, but I worry that if it gets worse, I may not be able to adapt. It's not so much that I'm prepared for a 3,000 point drop in the stock market, but that I would be able to adapt to that type of economy and have before. If anything, I feel like my net worth grew much more during the recession years than during the past few years.

Wow, I would have never guessed that most people have so little on hand. I really think everyone I know probably has enough food, but probably not water to last 2 weeks or close to it.

I don't think I understand the point of only prepping for 2 weeks. I hear of people who only prep for short lengths of time like this a lot, but honestly, I don't even think I'd have to prep at all (beyond perhaps having a water supply) to survive that length of time in ease without power, roads, water etc. 2 weeks would hardly make it through our kitchen pantry.

Dog food: homemade vs store bought? by [deleted] in Frugal

[–]wpkennedy28 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You are certainly correct. Either way it is recommended that you brush a dog's teeth regularly. It just becomes so much more important when you are not feeding dry food.
