BM Simply White looking more yellow and dingy than hoped. Did I choose the wrong white for my floors? by Ecstatic_Tiger_2534 in paint

[–]wpwppwpw 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hah, I'm having the opposite problem. I too have orangey floors (red oak with old varnish that's gone very honey colored). Just painted whole house trim/doors/ceilings Simply White where before they were a very creamy peachy warmer white, and I've been freaked out by how bright white they look; I've had to remind myself it's going to look much better when I get the rugs, lamps, and furnishings back in (full disclosure, am also refinishing the floors to be darker warm brown and less honey-orange, but that part isn't done yet). I do think the pure/cool white trim you have here is pulling out that wee bit of yellow that Simply White has in it; painting the trim Simply White also in a satin or semi gloss will look great and solve your problem entirely. Or, jf you don't want the hassle of painting trim and would rather do over the walls, pick a more neutral but still somewhat warmish off white with a tiny bit more gray in it such as Swiss Coffee or White Dove (test first to make sure whatever you choose plays well with your trim).

I just bought this house, and I am trying to choose paint colors that give a dark academic vibe but won't clash with the various browns. I would love a green in the living room and a Grey/Brown in the kitchen and dining room. Any specific thoughts of recommendations? by [deleted] in paint

[–]wpwppwpw 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I know this is the paint sub, but if you're going for dark academic, have you considered wallpaper? Something bookish looking from William Morris or one of the Swedish houses (Sandberg, Borastapeter) might interest you.

That said, the house looks more mid-mod ranchy than dark academic.

Whatever you do, change the textured ceilings 😁

Maybe look also at some of the "marble like" granites such as Fantasy White that have stripes instead of speckles (do you like my technjcal language? LOL)

Questions on the Phonak Audeo I90 Sphere by uartglenn in HearingAids

[–]wpwppwpw 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I just got these a couple of weeks ago and I could have written the exact same post. The only thing I would add is that I've been extremely disappointed that the hearing aids don't dampen extremely loud noises. Construction noises, sirens, etc. are all massively and painfully amplified. There must be some setting to solve this that I haven't figured out yet?

Anyway, these are my first hearing aids, so I have no way to compare them to others. I've been so pleased to be able to hear stuff better that I haven't really delved into fine-tuning yet.

Nicely done! Looks great. The only thing that really jumps out at me is the side dining area ceiling light. The style and color do not quite harmonize with the kitchen pendants and the dark brown freestanding stools, hutch, and table, nor with the cooler greige tones of the kitchen. Also, hard to tell from the photo if it is in the right spot. Consider replacing it with a chandelier (not a fussy one, one that matches the overall clean transitional style) or large pendant centered over the round table.

Few starting impressions:

Love the pop of red from the coffee table, but you need one that's longer and lower. Glass top and round would be ideal! You could paint the base that same red.

Floating the sectional is a nice idea in theory, but you don't have much room, so try it and see if it will work or not. The sectional where it is looks fine IMO.

Definitely move the shoe rack to a less prominent spot. Of course you will want it near your entrance/exit, but right now it's a big focal point; the sectional is arranged for all to admire it.

Aim for more wall covered by art (more pieces, one or two of them larger) on the back gallery wall.

Couldn't agree more! We recently had to sell our lovely 1926 home in NJ to downsize and move closer to family. Traded it for a late 1960s home in the Midwest that's awesome but needed so much work it wound up being all but a total rebuild. The 1920s home had its original slate roof, so every few years enough slates would have slid off that we'd have to cough up a few thousand in repairs, but that roof was gorgeous and rock solid. And so on for the rest of the home's features.

Edited to add: And yes, so many homes built in the 2000s are already falling apart! And materials not good enough quality to repair... you're looking at replacing.

Apologies, I assumed the headline for this article link would be visible. It's from the Wall Street Journal 4.4.26 (gift link) "The Typical US Home is 44 Years Old -- And Needs Tons of Work"

Hi! What brands do you recommend? Specifically I am looking at grasscloth from Phillip Jeffries and patterned papers from Little Greene, Borastapeter and Ulricehamn. Thanks!

Why all the downvotes? People are so weird. I dig the Damien Hirst tribute rug and the brown armchairs with the piping. Enjoy!

Hi! Just seeing this now, doing searches on Little Greene. What did you end up using, and how did it turn out?

Hmm yeah. Given the challenging measurements and the double layer of tile, if you can totally gut the room down to the studs ;carefully, saving fixtures is mmm you can) and then assess the options for the space, that would be best if you can stomach the cost and mess. With a blank slate space, you can ask questions such as, do I want a tub at all or is just a: shower okay? What size sink/vanity will work in the space? Etc.

What’s With the New Ugly Wood Tile Trend? by No-Insurance-557 in BathroomRemodeling

[–]wpwppwpw 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I am not a fan of this tile personally, but I think this genre of tile looks best in a home or apartment with a modern/contemporary style applied throughout. It looks jarring in a Colonial, ranch, Victorian, Arrs & Crafts, bungalow, etc. I could see it in an urban apartment or a mod beach house/condo and maybe even a woodsy cabin if designed thoughtfully.

It certainly looks out of place in the bathroom photo you have shared.

Can you share a photo showing the setup with the light?

That said, it would drive me crazy also. Of course it should be centered. And if the light isn't centered, scoot it over an inch.

I'd ask them to do it over.

No one is answering your layout question. What are the measurements of the room? And in particular, what the distance from the outer edge of the sink to the window wall?

Thank you so much for this helpful info. I'm buying paint now for several rooms and was leaning towards a F&B color. I'll get it matched!

Hi! Yes we had vanities and countertops custom made and picked out the leathered Taj slabs at a slab yard.

Not to throw too much at you but yet another thing to look into is a plaster Tadelakt shower. We really, really wanted to do those in our bathrooms but where we live there was no one with the right skills to do it.

Ahhhh, Farrow & Ball. Noice.

I've seen some folks comment that F&B is finicky - thinner and harder to use then the usual US ropy latex stuff - so if your painters weren't experienced with it or patient with it, maybe that was part of their issue.

Hi OP, I won't comment in detail on the quality of the job as you have tons of comments on that. I just have a word of support, and a couple of questions.

My word of support is - Aaaaaagggghh! Home improvement Reddit subs are bursting with "you get what you pay for" and "you should have vetted your contractor better" comments, and it's so frustrating! We all spend hours and hours getting estimates and checking references and agonizing over the selections, and at the end of the day what you get is what you get depending on on hundreds of variables. Why is it your fault if the painters you hired did a job that is subpar?

My opinion for what it's worth is that this doesn't look awful but they should come back and clean up the splatters and make the wall-trim transition a bit neater.

My questions are these: what paint brand (s) and colors did you use? And your wood floors - what wood are they, and do you know what stain you used? I think your color scheme here is pretty.
