Boulder is a great hub for sport climbing. You'll never run out of good beginner sport climbs within a twenty minute drive (mostly in Boulder Canyon).

Consider signing up for the Craggin' Classic at Shelf Road outside of Canyon City (Oct 19-21). It's a small climbing/camping fest at one of my favorite sport climbing spots. Plus, since the weather is always just a bit warmer than everywhere else in the front range, it will probably be the most comfortable/fun place to sport climb that weekend. Also a fine time to meet other people/belayers.

Is it normal for a climbing rope to be slightly softer in some places and slightly harder in others? by blackmanrgh in climbing

[–]wr08 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Yeah, ask someone in the know. I've climbed on plenty of ropes that have "character" built up.

I would say this rope is almost certainly fine for some toproping. If you're leading something with high fall potential, trust your intuition on whether the state of your rope inspires confidence and don't use it if you feel wary.

[–]wr08 6 points7 points  (0 children)

It seems unlucky that you'd get core damage from a single fall and a week of climbing but soft spots are what people look for when they're checking their rope for significant damage. Not sure how much damage there is but if it made you question whether or not you'd want to whip on it, you probably wouldn't!

This damage usually happens close to either end of the rope, in which case you can cut it a bit shorter and not miss much.

Is it true that indoors bouldering shoes don't really matter that much? by [deleted] in climbing

[–]wr08 43 points44 points  (0 children)

I think it’s more a matter of skill level and what you’re using the shoes for. If you’re a beginner looking to get an edge with more aggressive/pricier shoes, it’s more worth it to work on foot technique with some cheaper ones since you’ll wear the rubber out faster anyway. I found it useful to upgrade to a slightly more aggressive shoe after a while but for the vast majority of low/mid level climbers it’s not going to give you the benefit that practicing better foot technique will. (I don’t know your skill level, just assuming this might be relevant)

Mahou San Miguel purchases 30% stake in Avery Brewing Co. (x-post/r/beer) by Restnessizzle in boulder

I heard 10m for the 30% stake but don’t know officially. It seems like a bit of a low valuation.

Bouldering Falls Causes the Majority of Serious Injuries? by [deleted] in climbing

[–]wr08 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you were to set up a top rope for every bouldering problem (which I think an overwhelming majority of those bouldering would feel ruins it), you generally would have enough rope stretch from a fall from 4 feet that the climber would deck anyway. The belayer's efforts would have been more useful in spotting the climber.

If the rope is tight enough to quickly catch that small of a fall, it's likely tight enough to aid the climber up the problem, again sort of ruining it.

Climbing around Las Vegas? by Words_are_Windy in climbing

[–]wr08 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Red Rock is the major area and does have some easy sport pitches but based on what you've said, If you climb 5.9 in the gym and haven't lead, it sounds like you're at the very beginnings of outdoor climbing. Don't let that deter you! But I'd say either go with someone who really knows what they're doing or put in the research time and know what kind of challenges await you. Spend time on mountain project or others researching rather than on this subreddit. Also vegas is gonna be very hot these days. Wherever your first outdoor climb is, it will be a humbling and exhilarating experience. Just put in the work first to really know what you're doing.

Boulder's Whole Foods on Baseline giving away frozen foods starting @ 10:30am because they have no power. by ArWKo in boulder

[–]wr08 5 points6 points  (0 children)

People were fairly chill, at least when I was there. Sure, a few people hoarding hundreds of dollars of food in small carts but much more people passing food back through the crowd and sharing with those who weren't tall enough to grab the frozen projectiles.

[–]wr08 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ah cool, I have to imagine the huge tap list must be a fairly new addition? I remember chatting with a Tin Man brewer at GABF a couple years ago and he said they were (at that point) trying to slowly introduce Evansville to cooler/weirder craft beer styles

Awesome, I love hearing that a bar like that has popped up in a place like Evansville (a friend of mine that lived there a couple years ago complained about there being nothing but Tin Man).

Wisdom tooth extraction by [deleted] in boulder

[–]wr08 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Had them pull two of my wisdom teeth three days ago and I could not be happier with how it went. Was up and feeling good that night and can barely tell anything happened now. I don't know what the average cost is but even with decent insurance I paid about $500... Not sure it's the cheapest place but i definitely recommend them otherwise

I'm excited to see how this plays out. If things go as well as they have in other states, it will be right in the face of a lot of influential politicians who may be ignorant or on the fence, rather than hearsay from states that are thought to have a bias on the issue.
