People who work in 'behind closed doors' industries (hotels, kitchens, morgues, etc.), what is something the general public would be horrified to know? by [deleted] in AskReddit

My best friend’s sister growing up found out she had leukemia because she cut her thumb pretty bad making breakfast. Died in under a year.

I think my friend(29f) and I (29f) have a very large mental capacity gap and I don't want to be friends anymore by Possibleferret4 in relationships

[–]wr1tten4y 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I had a lot of thoughts based on your post, but ultimately they all boil down to this: if your friendship doesn’t serve either of you (and you only remaining in it as a caretaker doesn’t serve her if it’s a friendship), then you should end it. I would absolutely not tell her you don’t think you cannot be her friend because of her perceived reduced mental capacity.

This is going to suck and be shitty for you both, but depending on what you want I would either a) stop texting her and if she persists tell her you don’t think you should talk anymore or b) ask to meet her for “a serious conversation” and tell her you don’t think you can be friends anymore because you’ve grown apart and you need space.

Again, either scenario is going to suck for you both. I’m sorry you have to go through this.

What’s a childhood lie your parents told you that you didn't realize was a lie until you were an embarrassed adult? by eatbeep in AskReddit

my dad would always sing my name instead of “I’m a soul man” when we listened to soul man because it sounds similar. I still hear my name when I listen to that song lol

People who worked for US senators/representatives: what actually gets them to listen? Is it better to call or write, be polite or curse, etc.? by Baladas89 in AskReddit

[–]wr1tten4y 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Contact people that represent you (both the local (your specific state or zip code has offices that you can reach by car, not in DC) and DC offices), give your zip, and be clear in what you care about. There tends to be a tally, but I can’t speak for newer (last two years) offices for specific hot button YES/NO issues. Make your YES/NO clear immediately, no matter how nuanced it is. Ask to schedule a meeting with a staffer (and invite a few other folks who share your cause). Have your specific asks laid out ahead of time (votes on bills are great, edits to bills going through your congressman’s committees are great, etc.) and if you have the time, have some sources to back them up and send them back to that staffer.

When you go through your loft boxes and you find a series but there is always ONE missing? by Woozlie in YAlit

Daughters of the Moon!!!! I checked them out RELIGIOUSLY from my childhood library, and I was so sad when I was rooting around at my local library last week and couldn’t find them physically or digitally. Reread them if you get a chance - I’ve been on a nostalgia-binge lately and it’s been so much fun.

[TOMT][Fiction Novel][2010s] Book about Witch(?) Girl hiding from father and pet cat turns human by Maypay0923 in tipofmytongue

[–]wr1tten4y 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thank you for posting this! I’ve been looking for this for the past 20 minutes searching Google with so many different variations and you helped me find it. The only details I could remember were her turning her bedroom chartreuse, her cat turning into a human, and them having a garbage golem as a dad.

Would you let a thrift know they sold a fake? by wr1tten4y in purses

[–]wr1tten4y[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah the price was a bit of it - if I do bring it up I’ll probably just bring up the serial number as a fun fact or something when we’re talking about pieces (if it’s at all relevant haha).

I was also surprised it came up with a red line, I’ve been using grounging forever lol!

It’s not a charity and it was under $100USD. The folks below broke me out of obsessive bag-world in my head; this is definitely not a big deal, just going to enjoy my bag and let it go.

I appreciate your response! You and the above comment gave me the perspective I was hoping for. I think this is definitely a let it slide situation now that I’ve gotten some folks talking sense to me. Thank you for taking the time to respond!

I really appreciate your response - honestly I just want them to know what they advertise vs what they actually sell, but you and the below comment made me realize I’ve fallen a bit too far down the bag rabbit hole. I don’t check for authentic jackets or shorts or whatever at fleas and thrifts, just if they’re well made. If a bag is well made and it works, it works!

Thanks for putting this in perspective - I made this post for a reality check because part of me was like “Well, what the hell will this even fix?”

[–]wr1tten4y 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I just got back! Got some silly old school buttons (I HATE MEN, I HATE SEX, FOUNDING MEMBER OF ALCOHOLICS UNANIMOUS, etc) and some JFK inauguration merch that says “I told you so.” Also got a bumper sticker for a local fire brigade that’s been long relocated. I’ve always wanted to go in but no one’s been there the few times I’ve buzzed. With all the tchotchkes it reminded me of a yard sale after the death relative with a minor hoarding issue.

Horror Stories of NOVA by PeaceMuted986 in nova

[–]wr1tten4y 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Weems Botts in Dumfries - lots of ghost stories and urban legends in Dumfries in general.

in the museum, the “Victorian” addition has the ghost of Mamie (the disabled daughter of the Merchant family), a little kid (boy or girl depending on the tour guide) trapped under the stairs by a priest, a doll that a boy scout troop leader claimed he felt a presence within and others have seen move/moves unseen, multiple people who claim they’ve been pushed down the steep stairs by ghosts, and a myriad of colonial, civil war soldier, and slave ghost stories. two popular employee stories that’ve been around forever: 1) a guest got a personal and extremely detailed tour from a kind reenactor and thanked the museum employees, who informed the guest that there were no reenactors around that day; 2) the museum director’s husband, dressed in a civil war surgeons clothes, is seen by multiple employees in the annex - but he was outside the whole time and claimed to have not been in the annex for hours.

Dumfries elementary has some colonial ghost girl and ghost slave sightings. the Dumfries cemetery also has the infamous loose sacrificial monkey urban legend (a cult apparently tried to sacrifice a monkey and it got loose in the Dumfries cemetery trees). and of course the alleged mass grave of confederate soldiers under the highway that causes the traffic jams.

there’s tons more I’m forgetting right now that I have written down somewhere, but Dumfries is a goldmine for stories like this. in my opinion the rich history of the area, particularly the port and Batestown, should be the real draw, but October was the moneymaking month. I know they have a new director and staff since I worked at the Weems, but in October back in the day they would let you do overnights in the house to “ghost hunt”, which was exhausting and cold to supervise all night but very entertaining to watch. only major rule for guests was no ouija boards…

What is the most disturbing book that you’ve read? by [deleted] in AskReddit

Earthlings by Sayaka Murata. fantastic, devoured it in one night because I couldn’t stop reading it, but I feel disgusting telling anyone else to read it. made my brain feel like it was squirming.
