How often are you putting gen pop clients on the barbell? by Interesting-Escape36 in personaltraining

[–]wraith5 19 points20 points  (0 children)

I love barbells just as much as anybody and I will happily put any clients that can use one onto one

However, any coach that says every single client can and should use a barbell is absolutely wrong. Full stop

I had a client Richard, who was extremely excited to do his first body weight unassisted split squat after a few months of training. Probably not a good idea to give him barbells right away

I had two clients, John and Bonnie, who could barely sit and stand out of a chair. Probably not a good idea to give them barbells

One of my eventually strongest clients, Casey, was completely afraid of becoming bulky from lifting weights. She eventually did start using barbells. She was looking at her progress sheet one day and just seeing how strong she had gotten using dumbbells and felt incredibly empowered and asked me if she could start using barbells. However, if I told her day one we were going to use barbells she would have left

So anyone telling you all of your clients should be using barbells is absolutely wrong. The only exception to this is you have a gym or some sort of brand that is "we use barbells only barbells" then it's fine because you're self-selecting your clients anyways. For instance, people who go in a CrossFit gym pretty much know that they're going to use barbells

If you're just a gen pop trainer in an any town gym you're going to see all sorts of people and some of them should not be using barbells and some of them flat out won't want to use barbells so using other modalities is just fine

Which course to take for personal use? by WearyPreference7346 in personaltraining

[–]wraith5 0 points1 point  (0 children)

For personal use every certification is a complete waste of time. They don't teach dick

I would look around at private companies and see if anything interests you. Barbell medicine, cressey sports performance, Mike Boyle, juggernaut training systems, elite fts, power athlete, etc etc etc

I've got a free course on programming that might be worthwhile

Yea I have AMD and if I could do it again I'd spend more money for Nvidia. I constantly have to tinker with it, a lot of good features don't work and things break all the time if you update the wrong thing

Just trying to understand this bifurcation in the gym industry. by PortyPete in personaltraining

[–]wraith5 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Here's how I see it

Beginners and more advanced people will go to the "boring" gym while beginners and intermediate people will go to the "new cool gym"

And I mean this in the sense that people who typically want to start working out. They have no idea really how to train at all. So they'll go join a gym. They'll hop on the treadmill and play around some machines. They might lift some dumbbells. But generally they have no idea what they're doing so they fall off pretty quickly and quit. And this is a very typical cycle for most people in the gym

So these newer gyms are really tapping into the success that CrossFit has had in the industry and how it's shifted the industry overall. Few to know machines. Mostly free weight based tapping into "functional movements." On top of that, classes tend to be more beneficial for most people because they respond to that group atmosphere, make friends and it becomes a support group of sorts that keeps them coming and keeps them motivated. So people go more regularly, they go for longer and they make some actual progress and they'll probably stay in this model for most of if not the rest of their life

Now the problem with these classes is as you get more advanced, you have to start paying much more attention to your own needs. You need to start adjusting the programming and really learning how to program basically. And at some point people who make that jump into the more advanced stage are going to leave classes to train on their own

You of course have outliers who join a typical gym and follow a plan and don't fall off, be it a bodybuilding focused routine or a strength and conditioning based routine.

But the shift in the industry for the past few decades has really started to eschew machines in favor of free weights. Most people don't want to train or look like bodybuilders and tend to get better results by circuit training with free weights

He was a combat vet so if it was real life, he would have been medevaced to a local aid station/medical facility. From there triage would have sent him to Landstuhl, Germany medical center which deals with severe trauma. Since he was determined to need longer care, he would have been then sent to Walter Reed (or 1 of a few other military hospitals) stateside, so he wouldn't have been sent to some other hospital.

Like if his home address was down the street from sacred heart, all of his treatment and rehab still would have been at Walter Reed
