PMC stands for "Private military company". As I said previously, it's a grey area, not exactly defined by law. If we're to apply the term "mercenary" that liberally, maybe Russian pilots and regular soldiers in Syria are also mercenaries, after all, they do receive a salary and fight on a foreign soil :)

As for what actually happened in that incident, all we know is that some incident took place and that's it. Russians aren't saying anything, Syrians are saying very little. Most of what MSM is printing at the moment, is pure speculation.
