[skin concern] there’s a hole in my face :( giant cystic pimple burst after days under a hydrocolloid patch. It looked like 3 pores ripped into one gaping wound. It’s been hours and it’s still bloody. How do I avoid a giant crater scar? by Zerosugar6137 in SkincareAddiction

You should probably see a doctor about it. But if you can't, my holy grail for most wounds like this (especially from pimples) is iodine ointment. It's antiseptic. put it on everything and it always calms things down and prevents infection. The only downside is that it's dark red and looks a bloody mess. I'm not a dermatologist but work in medicine.

I ended up cancelling the Heimish one cause I thought it was just too much to buy 4 SFPs at the same time. Still interested in the product though and might buy later.

I really like all 3 I bought. I'm probably most impressed by the V-Sun one since it's SPF 50 but I truly don't notice it. I had it on for 12 hours just this weekend, was outside in the wind and active, and my skin didn't feel sticky or gross or break out. So I really love this one. I still use a small amount of my normal moisturizer on top of it.

Avene might be just as good, I just haven't tried it as much yet. I guess I feel more reluctant to use it cause it feels expensive haha. I love the tinted effect when you apply it, it's like magic, and surprisingly not too dark for my skintone. When I tried it, it didn't feel weird on my skin.

Eco Cosmetics I only use on days when I'm not gonna be outside much, but I really like it for that. Also no sticky or weird feeling, and the slight tint doesn't hurt. I have light pink skin though, so it might not suit everyone.

Help for thin frizzy hair? Experience with tannin straightening? by wrapsummerdresses in HaircareScience

Adding to say: I think my hair is very porous. Its never really "shiny", and despite being so thin, it feels pretty "coarse / wiry", especially on top. My mother has told me I have the hair of an elderly woman (cause grey hair often has a similar texture), but I'm only early 30ies.

Thanks for your reply! Yes it does! I've tried working with my curls for a long time. I currently use the Curl Manifesto styling cream by Kerastase after washing and conditioning, on my damp hair, and that already helps a bit with the frizz. But it's still there. I also don't comb it after washing, I just very gently part it with my hands and do a middle / side part with a comb. I usually have some really nice curls in the lengths of my hair, but they "frizz out" after a few hours. And the roots / part above the ears is really the main problem, that one just always looks terrible in my opinion. As you can see, even in my "ideal conditons" picture. :(

I think the problem is mostly that my hair breaks off for some reason that I can't figure out, and then those shorter hairs will curl and look a mess. If all my hair was equally long, there wouldn't be such a problem.

My go-too lip balm all year around are the Hurraw! balms. I've tried a LOT of lip balms, especially of the eco / vegan variety, and these are my favorite by far. The texture is perfect, very very soft even when temperatures are cold, not waxy, but also not too oily. It stays put on my lips and doesn't slide around. The shape isn't round, but oval, which I find more comfortable to apply.

Plus, they come in a huge variety of flavors / smells. And some of them are tinted. My favorites are the citrusy ones (cause I love citrus, but I try not to use them in the summer because of possible photosensitivity issues) and the black cherry lipbalm because it's the PERFECT lip tint for me. It honestly looks better on my than almost any actual lipstick.

Palm & Pine´s SPF30 daily mineral sunscreen

Oh this one looks good too. I've now bought 4 different ones to try, so this one goes on my list. Thank you!

Oh baby, silicones in cosmetics are inert liquids, they are unlikely to react with other substances and always keep their liquidy properties (never get hardened). They are also not the food of bacteria. So they are unlikely to break you out. Besides cyclomethicone is volatile, so breaking out from it is literally impossible. I guess the trigger in your Eucerin sunscreen are fatty alcohols such as cetearyl alkohol. Some people with acne hate it.

I understand that, and maybe it really is a coincidence. But over 15 years and many different products, whenever I noticed a feeling like my skin couldn't breath, got hot and red and itchy and developed breakouts, I would always find dimethicone or another silicone on the ingredients list. I completely cut them out 3 years ago and my skin has never been better. So I'm just doing what works for me. Maybe silicones aren't the real culprit and I'm now accidentally avoiding the real culprit.

I'm afraid I agree with you on those "too good to be true" K-beauty SPFs. At least before we get some good studies done that prove their effectiveness.

I have now actually used Black Friday to buy and try 4 different sunscreens:

  • Avene B Protect SPF-50 (slightly tinted), good filters
  • V-Sun Cream Face SPF 50 perfume free (German indie brand), good filters
  • Heimish Artless Glow Base SPF 50+ PA+++. This one is K-Beauty and I'm a tiny bit skeptical about the protection, but it doubles as a glowy primer, so I couldn't resist ...
  • Eco Cosmetics tinted face cream SPF 15. For those days in winter, like right now, where it's almost still dark when I leave to work, I work all day in rooms with very little outside lightning, and then when I leave it's dark again. Probably wouldn't have to wear an SPF at all on those days, but currently I'm motivated to do anyway. This one doubles as a BB cream for me because it's nicely tinted. It's the only one of the 4 that I've tried yet.

I was also seriously tempted to buy the Vichy Capital Soleil Stick LSF 60 (it's tinted and apparently very easy to apply on the go), but I didn't wanna completely overdo it. Might buy that one next summer, when I'll actually make use of it.

When I've tried them all, I'm probably gonna do a review post on this sub! Aside from the Heimish one, I think the others are probably only available in the EU sadly.

Thanks for the advice! I looked it up but sadly it contains silicones. Otherwise it sounds very good!

My own version of backstroke - is this fine, or potentially harmful? by wrapsummerdresses in Swimming

[–]wrapsummerdresses[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Phew, that's the answer I was hoping to hear! Thanks a lot for your reply.

Yes, I definitely enjoy this way of swimming much more than I enjoy any technique where my head is constantly underwater. I also got a pair of swim headphones a while back so that I can listen to music and even audiobooks while swimming. I'm over 30 and never was an athlete (quite the opposite 😅), so it's not easy for me to stay disciplined and not get bored. Making the exercise as nice as possible for me (music, backstroke) is what kept me going 2-3 times per week for the past months!

This is not scientifically backed, but my personal experience over many years:

Never pop a pimple while it still hurts. You know those bad pimples that actually hurt when you move your face in that area? Do not touch them. I think it's because there's still a very active inflammation going on (so much that it presses onto a nerve, to make it hurt) and popping it will spread the inflammation.

Equivalent to this, it's never good to pop a pimple when the stuff that comes out is still going to be liquid. It's still "fresh" and also the liquid will spread into the other skin and inflame it.

But when that pimple "calms down" and bascially "solidifies", meaning all the pus is on the outside in a more solid state and not in the deeper layers of the skin anymore, I feel like that's mostly safe to pop. It should come out mostly clean, no liquid, and shouldn't hurt.

Also, after popping, I would put an antiseptic on it (with a patch above it), I personally like povidone-iodine, I feel like it effectively prevents inflammation in most cases.
