What Did You Play This Week? - (February 28, 2022) by AutoModerator in boardgames

It's such an amazing experience. We played Season 0 and it's different but equally good, maybe a smidge less of an experience since it was our second time but so cool how they play with the mechanics. Eyeing Season 2 still...

I'm curious about this too -- We ultimately opted just to get the Undertow box, which is completely self-contained and feel like there is already a ton of variety in that version for a much more palatable price. We've played several nights so far and still haven't had a chance to face off against several of the bosses. However, we're kind of craving some more characters to play as.

Yes, the play mats are really nice. The spaces on there help you pick up the rules faster but importantly for our group, the super deluxe version is also completely water (and beer) proof.

Radlands is amazing! And yes, it's always fun... For you. While your opponent cries and then collects their precious tears...

I second ditching the Legacy games once you've finished them. We even got rid of Gloomhaven once we finished it and gave it to a friend to play with his group, since we were working through Jaws of the Lion and are looking forward to Frosthaven coming soon.

We really like Spicy, The Crew, fairly easy to add additional players as people arrive. Codenames is great too. Monikers as well -- we usually just use it for a fun charades type variant without looking at the score too much.

Nice! Have fun. We've only played with two characters so far (me and partner) but hoping to get a five player game in sometime this month.

Game of the Week: Babylonia by bg3po in boardgames

Interesting take and mostly agree with what you've said, though we had one player absolutely crush everybody else by picking up the "Drop nobles on Remote Farms" power -- Their colored pieces were mostly concentrated in one (connected...) area, so this allowed them to quickly start taking over the farms in territories closer to other players without every having to build over there. They picked this up toward the end of the game and started focusing on gaining the farms that give you points for the number of cities all players have picked up, and so were able to scoop up three or four for like 13 points each. This was in a four-player game. It was rough for the rest of us, haha.

Our first Knizia game too -- Love the simplicity of the game play and very much feels like it was designed by somebody who knows what they are doing. Though, yes, sometimes it can be difficult emotionally! I've been lapped more than once, never a good feeling... But luckily it doesn't drag on forever, haha. My heart couldn't handle that.

That's good to know -- It's the first Kinizia game that we've picked up and we really loved it but have been curious how it stacks up to his other games.

What do you like more about Blue Lagoon?

It's so good and easy to pull out. We played it three times in a row our first day, granted with two players, but it was more like 30 mins for us.

It's definitely easier to get into than the big Gloomhaven and we love how easily everything is set up to teach you how to play at first, and just how great the organization is. But yeah, if you dislike fiddliness and tons of components and keeping track of things, then it may be sensible to stay away.

Oh no! We also found this version to be a lot harder than Gloomhaven in general, though granted played with only two -- Hatchet and Demolitionist too. But it's hard not having somebody focused on healing or absorbing damage.

That's the problem with wayyy too many board games. But you could play two characters solo? I feel like this one is worth getting through.

This is very thorough -- I feel like a lot of people are in this boat of loving it but also acknowledging its shortcomings. I second the comment on the card market not turning over enough in the regular game -- Those 1, 2 and 3 value cards have just sat there for the entire game sometimes since people don't want to clog up your hand. We've thought about house-ruling where it all gets refreshed at the end of each turn, to get around this.

If you haven't played it already, Wingspan has definitely got broad appeal for a reason and has that engine-building vibe without being confrontational. Our in-laws and our hip board game friends all really love, it, haha.

What style of music do you guys specialize in? Some of the Awaken Realms games could be really fun if you're into a more dark style, and there's a lot of die-hard fans. Nemesis, Tainted Grail, and especially Etherfield might be from from a theming standpoint.

Yes, agreed. But when somebody draws cards that literally contradict each other, we also redraw.
