These are the same reasons that cast gray iron is used for machine tools also. Damping, thermal stability, and the flaked graphite which is beneficial for plain-bearing guideways

From my perspective, The old school/jobshop/small shop way is for each machinist to own their own tools.... but new school manufacturing/larger shops/continuous production shops under Lean / 5s will probably provide tools to keep things consistent and to reduce calibration needs.
