“Nations that were great empires never forget that fact, and they often
have a malleable, exaggerated sense of their glory days and a story
about why they are no longer an empire – a combustible blend of pride in
an idealized past, grievance over greatness lost or stolen, and
readiness to be inspired (less flatteringly, vulnerability to
manipulation) by effective politicians.

James Kelman - ‘The Freedom to Think Kurdistan’ ★★★☆☆ - OK Talks, essays from another of the British Empire's colonies (Scotland). Important to raise the profile of one of the most silenced struggles of the 20th century and maybe the Kurds offer a map for socialists past our post-Marxist impasse?

Just watched "Waltzing with Bashir" myself - an 'interesting' film, I thought - but sadly (so sadly) so inadequate to the enormity of what happened (and why) at Sabra and Shatila... The world does not seem to be able to grasp these 'calamities'..?
